She didn't tell me to do any special exercise for it. I'll have to ask her.

Apparently the hip rotation thing runs in my family. Can you describe your

exercises ?

Thanks!

Rhonda,

That's great your PT helped realign your legs. My PT did the same

thing and I was totally amazed when I got up to walk. I can't believe

it took only a few seconds to correct my hip alignment. Thankfully

it's an easy exercise I can do myself and do that at least twice a

day. I can see a difference when I do it.

Turns out the x-ray showed DDD nut I needed the MRI to show that there was no

disk left at all. Had I not insisted in the MRI they would only have tried

epidural injections that would not have helped me. Only the MRI would show

what's really going on. Prior to surgery I would be walking and my whole leg

from top to bottom would go numb.

Thanks!

Anyways, I decided to call my doctor and let her know what was going

go to PT. I also wanted to know if she could give me a referral to a

of me being there. I thought since I was having such bad pain the

past few days that it would be within my best interest to seek out

another doctor to at least get the initial appt out the way. I am

also wondering if they need to do any CTs or MRIs of my back. So far

the only thing done has been x-rays. So on to the story....I left a

message with the nurse and get a call back from the nurse telling me

the doctor (or actually PA) wants me to go to an urgent care and get

evaluated. I was confused as to why that was. She tells me because my

pain is not normal. ???? I told her I have a history of back problems

and don't understand why she would send me to an urgent care. I

wanted to see about getting in to see a new doctor. There is nothing

an urgent care can do for me. So I call back and ask for the doctor

I hope to hear from her tomorrow nad would like to get a referrel for

another doctor. I'm also a little confused as to why I see a

orthosurgeon (neurosurgeon). I guess because he would be the one to

do a surgery on me if I ever need to have surgery. But these doctors

deal with such serious surgeries that they look at me like I'm stupid

and shrug me off. Is it normal to see a surgeon for regular followup?

I just want to thank you all for your support. It really helps having

people to talk to that know what its like to have back problems.

I have always had uneven hips. My right hip is the one higher and out

of alignment. I used to see a chiro for that but I'm beginning to

wonder if he contributed to my fractures.

So the repositioning exercise is very easy. Since it's my right hip

that gives me the problems I have to lay on my left side with my legs

bent as if I was sitting in a chair. I just push my left knee into

the groud 3 times for 5 seconds each. Then I put my right hand on my

right hip for resistance and push my hip backwards towards my hand. I

do this 3 times for 5 seconds as well. It's amazing because triggers

my muscles to realign my right hip. When I was going to PT the

therapist noticed the problem with my hip is more that it rotates

outward not necessarily upward. I do this at least twice a day and

any time my back starts hurting. It's really helping me out.

As fas as the other exercises. I do one called bridging: laying on

the floor with my legs bent I stabilize my stomach then lift my bumm

off the ground using my stomach and glutes.

Marching: Laying in the same position as bridging I just lift my

right leg then my left leg, alternating, as if your marching. I can

add the arms moving in oppositie directions to make me have to work

on my core a little more.

Clam: This is the same position as the other two. I have a resistence

band that I tie around my legs and have to pull my legs about for a

few seconds.

Those are the 4 main exercises I do. I hope that is what you were

wanting to know.

Thank goodness I have some wonderful supportive friends. When I was so upset by

my ignored email outreach I decided last Saturday to join them all dressed up. I

had my cane and moved slow. I told one person that I was 80 and looked great for

my age (47), and told someone else I messed up my back with a kamma sutra

position! I had to get out and joke about it. I am proud if myself for going

out even thigh I was in pain and moving so slowly. It was better than staying

home and crying about my boyfriend.

Thanks!

Thanks fir all that info. I will show itvto my PT

Because of my recent fusion the bridge is not possible but maybe the others are.

Thanks!

I have always had uneven hips. My right hip is the one higher and out

Yes I do because it will show the soft tissue where the x-ray won't. Make sure

you get your doctor to precert it for your insurance. Humana told me I didn't

need a precert but thank god my doctor did one anyway cuz insurance tried to

penalize me but I had acongirmation number proofing the precert. Otherwise I

would have had to pay a 50% penalty which was $500!

Thanks!

I agree with you , I was talking to my mother today about this economy..

Our biggest agreement is what women are having to face today. She has seen more

and more women having severe spinal problems due to the fact of more women

having to enter the hard labor working environment. Agree with me or not, but I

have witnessed it in my life time. Women are not built to handle heavy manual

labor. This in fact happened to my mother and it just broke her down really

fast. My neuro states that the spine is the worst mechanism in the human body,

its not made to carry heavy loads. I really feel for the working woman doing

manual labor, it is horrifying what it is doing to the young women these days.

Sorry I don't mean to start a big controversy about this, but if you stop and

count the number of women in all these groups that are seriously injured, you

will see what I mean.

Hi

its too bad that alot of the old folks from the Great Depression arent around

much anymore, I sure learned alot from my Grandparents, had a hard time

understanding their extreme thriftiness and that they never went anywhere and

saved everything, but they were so resielent in the face of adversity, what they

went through growing up made them so tough!

I think todays young folks are in for a very rude awakening the way this economy

is going, its not going to right itself overnite.

You and I and others know there is a lot that isnt fair in life, God, working in

the medical profession you sure see that.

None of us asked for our spinal dissabilites, but we gottem and we have to

struggle to keep on living, raise a family, be there for others, keep a job,

take care of a household and deal with terrible pain at times.

Yes life isnt fair, boy thats a tough one to learn isnt it.... back in the old

days they knew that one as young people, now people are having to learn at older

ages, but they still have to learn.

I guess thats why people used to respect the old folks and all their cumulative

wisdom they had to share.....

I digress too.... your husband will eventually come to terms, its hard at his

age, I think I was beginning to learn that than too, 27 I was just going to

nursing school. Boy that was the eye opener.....

anyway- hang in there with him...

Re: Just need to vent

Hey Shayna,

Thanks for the support. My husband is 4 years younger

thanme...and I always dated older guys! I hope he

grows up soon. And trust me...I have reminded him of

the vows and I HAVE had to take care of him. Earlier

this year he had a rotator cuff repair and I took

darned good care of him and he knows it. I tell him

right out when he's being as ass.

I have also described me medical condition in full to

him in ways he can understand, but he's actually said

he's thought I might be faking it or pretending I'm

worse than I am. He can be a real dick sometimes...

I know he's just so overwhelmed though. He's a good

person, but choosing to be a jerk. He's 27 years old,

24 when we met and he became an instant step-dad to

three kids at 25 years old. Their dad has not paid for

anything and no child support as of yet. He has had to

be sole provider for a family of five...which he says

he " didn't sign up for " . I have to remind him that

life isn't fair. It's not fair that I have this

chronic and disabling problem. It's not fair that my

kids' dad abused me and I had to get a divorce.

There's a lot that isn't fair and it could certainly

be worse! He didn't sign up for a lot of things, but

like you said...he did vow. It's just sad that these

days the younger generations in particular view

marriage as disposable and vows are nothing more than

ceremonial words.

Wow, I have often wondered about how the work I did and if it has

effected my body... I used to carry 28ft. ladders on a daily basis,

and sometimes, up and down blocks, and getting them over fences when

I had to, then the man hole covers, those things are so heavy too,

just all the heavy things I worked with on a daily basis.... makes me

wonder how much of this " other " stuff I suffer from is because of

that. Now a days when I see younger people lifting things wrong that

are very heavy, etc. And I tell them they really should lift them

properly, but they are young and think they are invincable and

say " naw, it isn't going to hurt me,I " m strong " Well, now I tell

them, Well you know what? steel is stronger than bones and it wears

down..... Gets them to thinking.

On a similar subject. My 17 year old daughter is one of those soprr achievher

kids. Her back pack must weigh more than she does as she us quite short and

slender. Her. BAck is Always aching. She carries many huge textbooks in it and

even has to hand carry some also. I've talked my son into using a rolling

backpack which helps somewhat but she says she doesn't want to look like a nerd.

My son says everyone thinks he's a nerd anyway so he may as well be a

comfortable nerd. After readings all these posts and going through this fusion I

pleaded with her yesterday to at least adjust the straps correctly as instructed

by my PT. It's a shame the way the schools force the kids to carrry so many

heavy books daily. Both my Kidd have a slight case of scoliosis also. Nothing

nearly as severe as mine.

Thanks!

I never really thought of it, but your right. I have never done

manual labot but a few years ago I worked at a veterinarian hospital

and had to put up a 40# bag of dog food. Well I lifted the wrong way

and messed up my back. I was in the worst pain of my life and had to

take a few days off. I'm beginning to wonder if that is when I

fractured my spine...makes sense to me.

Rhonda,

Tell your son he may look like a nerd (in his eyes) but he won't be

the one with a bad back when he's older. YOu know my daughter, 2

years old, was born with congenital scoliosis. She is less than 10

degrees at this point but by the time she goes to school I might try

and convince her to use the rolling backpack. If she starts with it

young she will thinks its normal to have. Thanks for the heads up.

Ok So I am ready to be done with RA now. I am so tired for the last week and I

just really want it to go away now! I am hurting all over and now a new joint is

flaring...my left hip. I am dreading where this is heading as I know once a

joint starts to hurt it only gets worse before it levels off to a constant ache

and then the joint is always sore. I was so worried about my larger joints being

affected and now I am in the midst of it. I just really want to be normal again.

I just need to vent today as I am tired and sore and fed up!

I take my meds regularly, I try to eat healthy and I try to get lots of rest but

sometimes it doesn't matter how much rest you get there is no helping this

crappy fatigue!

So with that said I am wishing everyone else a pain free day!

Yeah, I agree with you, no one tells you what it's really going to be like. I've

done all the things you have done which results in being able to cope, I guess.

But I don't remember exactly what it's like to be normal any more because there

is always the fatigue and usually something somewhere aches. If someone told me

I was completely RA free it'd probably take me a year to believe them!

, my sock monkey, thinks the same thing, just take a nap, everything will

be alright. I don't like having to rest all the time, it wasn't my style. Now we
