your blood sugar results

Last night I was unable to go to sleep, because of the banging , sputtering and

knocking around my heart was making at 2 a.m., so I had to get up and take

another candy of 4-5 grams until this fuel deprived heart could calm down from

all those irregular heart beats. By experience this usually does not happen if I

can push my bs level up to 170 before I go to bed. Even with this extra sugar

this morning my fbs was 86, so I ate a peach and dosed 6 units of Humalog and 25

units of Lantus. Next up will be a pre-lunch bs level and food and more

Humalog, then a two hour post bs level. For some reason of which I am unaware I

usually function better if I aim for a two hour post prandial bs of over 120 ,

but less than 140. As an old fart striving for less than 120 recently has not

worked out so well for me. We'll see. those hard rock flat round candies

offer more and cheaper blood glucose boosts than thos expensive glucose tablets.

jen, when you take your two hour blood sugar after a meal and it is high

would you do the correction then or wait till you do your lunch insulin. thanks,

RE: your blood sugar results

Well, my day seems terrible compared to all of you!

I woke up at 7.6 (137 mg/dl), took 3.55 units of insulin to cover 30 grams

of carbs.

I was 15.6 (281 mg/dl) after breakfast and corrected with 3.8 units of

insulin.

Before lunch I was 6.9 (124 mg/dl) and took 2.1 units of insulin to cover

25

grams of carbs (a sandwich on Weight Watchers bread and some sliced

strawberries). About an hour after lunch I ate another 10 grams of carbs

and

took 0.9 units of insulin to cover them.

About an hour after this my class ended and I went to the coffee shop for

a

short half hour lunch break. I tested at 10.2 (184 mg/dl) and had a latte

and half a brownie which was 40 grams of carbs in total. I took 4.4 units

to

cover this.

Two hours after this I was at 11.1 (200 mg/dl) and took a unit to correct

this, since I still had lots of insulin on board. At this point I figured

I've been spiking after meals so changed my I:C ratio from 1:11 to 1:10.

I'm

pretty sure hormones are mucking me up because my blood sugars have been

much more erratic these past few days even though I'm eating fewer carbs!

Two hours later I met with classmates to work on a group project. I would

be

on campus for another few hours but because it was after 5:00 nothing was

open. I hadn't planned on staying late, but we have assignments due at the

end of the week so needed to meet, so I had no kind of dinner packed. I

was

starving so had a 25 gram granola bar. The granola bar actually had no

nutritional information on it but most seem to be 25 grams of carbs so

this

is what I bloused for, taking only 1.6 units because I had insulin on

board

and my blood sugar at this time was 4.9 (88 mg/dl).

Two hours later I was down to 2.9 (52 mg/dl) so ate about 15 grams of

Skittles. About half an hour after this I also had another latte which was

25 grams of carbs, another guestimate. I took 2.5 units to cover this.

Now, about 45 minutes later, I am having an extremely late dinner. I still

have lots of insulin on board but will bolus 3.6 units for a hamburger

that

my family has saved. I will test in two hours or so which will also be my

before-bed reading.

I do not plan on eating anything else today, so that is a total of 190

grams

of carbs. That is pretty good for a day when I'm out of the house for

almost

12 hours straight!! I will try to aim for lower tomorrow. I also hope my

blood sugars are more stable tomorrow because this is pretty unstable

compared to what I've been getting for the past few months, seems to be

hormone-related, however, as it happens every few weeks it seems and I

need

to change basal rates and carb ratios to get things sorted out.

I correct at two hours if I'm high. However, my pump takes off the " insulin on

board " so I don't do a full correction. " Insulin on board " is the insluin that

is still lowering your blood sugar from your last bolus (meal or correction

insulin). For example, Huamlog takes about 3-4 hours to stop lowering blood

sugar. So if I take three units of insulin, and test at two hours, I will still

have a unit left lowering my blood sugar. If I am high and would normally do a

orrection of two units before a meal (with no " insulin on board " ), then at two

hours I would take off that unit that's still working at lowering my blood sugar

and I would only take one unit. A pump does this all automatically once you set

your duration of insulin action (mine is set at three and a half hours), but you

could also do it with injections if you were willing to do the math. When I was

on injections I often just halved my correction dose if I was correcting after a

meal.

Hope all that made sense!!

Hey dudes and dudettes,

pre-lunch I was 83, 4.6.

I had fresh green beans, ricotta cheese with fresh tomato sliced on it - season

to taste.

I also had tuna fish mixed with home style brown mustard spread on fresh celery.

I dosed 2 units of humalog to cover the meal.

My two hour post was 78, 4.3.

I ate one glucose tablett to come up to around 90, 5.0.

Next up, pre-dinner...

try smarties... there are 6 grams in each package of smarties candy. Work just

as well as glucose tablets and are pretty cheap at wallmart or any sort of

dollar stores.

yes, much quicker actually. As soon as glucose hits your mouth, the glucose goes

into your gums, tongue, and so on. It is already going into your system even

before you can swallow it.

Man, I am just running high today. I think I might put my basal rates up, since

my readings so far are very stable but just running too high in general.

I was 9.7 or 175 this morning and took 5.45 units to cover breakfast and

correct. I also changed my infusion set.

Two hours later I was 11.2 or 202 and gave myself 1.5 units to correct.

Two hours after that I was 9.8 or 176 and since I had almost no insulin on board

my correction was 1.35 units.

Now, an hour later my pre-lunch reading is 10.5 or 189. I have had nothing to

eat since breakfast so it's frustrating that corrections aren't doing much! I

don't think it's my pump site because I'd be a heck of a lot higher if I wasn't

gettting any insulin at all. For lunch I'm having a sandwich, soem strawberries,

and some veggies and dip for a total of 35 grams of carbs, and to cover those

carbs and correct my blood sugar I'll take 5.0 units of insulin.

Hi,

I started this but have been out of the gaim for a couple of days due to a dead

soundcard. Now up and running again, so ready to play!

Pre Breakfast 7.2 (130) a little high for my liking. Breakfast is serial,

something I probably should avoid, but still have it once or twice a week. It

tends to spike me then leave me low.

Estimated at 30 grams of carbs, 7 units of inculin and 25 minutes of bolus time,

since serial does tend to spike me quite bad.

Cheers,

Brett.

Cheers,

Brett.
