Guest guest
Amazing that our food can be so damaged yet FDA approved! -- Re: High Fat Diet/ and everyone It's the homogenization that screws up the fat in milk. Guest guest
I did not understand your sentence about the low fat diet being a joke (I agree) and if you were connecting ketosis with low fat or Atkins. -- Re: High Fat Diet/ and everyone > > My Broda books doesn't recommend margerine - he talks about how good butter is. ????? Didn't your diet recommend: " Veggies with butter or oleo " Isn't oleo margarine? > > I could give you a handful of links discounting your views on saturated fats, but that's why > this world is a democracy. All that matters is what works for you in the long haul. This statement I agree with completely. Everyone seems to have an opinion on which diet is the best, but everyone seems to keep trying different diets and then gaining everything back. My OPINION is that low fat diets were the biggest joke perpetrated on the American public, followed only by the Atkins diet. Doesn't common sense tell you that something like ketosis is bad? My knowledge of what works for losing weight is based on experimenting with my husband, who was 215 lbs but is now 155, and has kept the weight off for 5 years. I only had 30 lbs to lose and was never considered that heavy. (Course, just changing from Synthroid to Armour might have had a lot to do with my excess weight coming off.) He, however, was fat. Everyone says EXERCISE! Well he'd go for walks after work every night, and every year, he was a fatter guy walking around the block! But he was very much a carb addict. So then I read everything I could on diet: Ornish (no fat--nope, triglycerides went through the roof); Atkins (high protein--nope, we both gained weight); Zone (combo of everything--too hard to follow trying to figure out " food blocks " ); Shintani (vegetarian--great recipes and we did lose some weight mostly cause it's low cal); and finally Dr. Weil (just eat moderate portions of everything--protein, carbs, and fat, and dump the processed foods). Just by avoiding most processed foods and especially anything with high fructose corn syrup, we have been able to maintain our optimum weights. I only used " real " food like sugar instead of aspartame or sweet & lo, butter instead of margarine, and nothing with food colors or preservatives since they give me hives. However, we both got adrenal fatigue in May of this year and are using the Rosedale diet not so much to lose weight, but to keep our prediabetes/hypoglycemia under control and hopefully, not turn into diabetes. Severely cutting the carbs has been helpful, as recommended. Before, we'd eat ice cream occasionally and had a carb like rice or pasta or bread with our meals. As long as we ate " real food, " and lots of fiber from fruits, veggies, whole grains, beans, and nuts, the weight did not creep back up. So, good luck to all out there trying to lose weight, however you choose to do it. It can be done. Barb
Guest guest
I don't like chicken either. I can tolerate it. I know what you mean about not a lot of choice and meats that are organic being expensive. I found a stew meat that is lamb at Whole Foods and it is not expensive. Guest guest
Hum well I just read the Rosedale book and it said avoid cottage cheese while Broda said use it. I did not even realize that cottage cheese was high in carbs but I avoid the low fat stuff and I like it with fruit. Guest guest
- Broda's diet is sure a strange one. I use to have a tremendous appetite but now that I'm hypo, I eat 2 meals a day instead of 4. It's great to hear that this diet is working so well for you so far. I'm hoping you continue to lose lots! Guest guest
Thanks . I went back on carbs and I need to cut down on them but I lost another pound even adding carbs. I think since adding carbs I have actually been busier at work so the weight loss now if probably due to no time to eat. Guest guest
Sammie: My mom has Broda's book right now. I must have read cottage cheese since I started buying it after I read the book. When I get the book back from mom I will look again. But I also recall someone, Rosedale I thought, saying to avoid cottage cheese due to sugar content. Do you have the book? Is it not listed as one of the cheeses? It is possible that he edited it. I just looked on Amazon and the cover is different. My copy is actually the 1976 first edition copy so maybe he removed cottege cheese? Now you got me wondering. -- Re: High Fat Diet/ and everyone Where does it say to eat cottage cheese in Broda? Guest guest
What I read about proteins in milk is that the body is not often able to break down milk protein itself, caesin, but that goat milk was more like human milk and easeir to digest. The proteins that don't get digested go into the blood and your body tries to attack them as foreign matter, hence the congestion, eczema, etc. I found I tolerate any dairy much better if I take enzymes specific to breaking down protein. But yes, I have also read that paturization and homogenization ruins the fat and makes them bad for us. I don't remember if it was too small, or just that it damaged them in some way that made them unhealthy. It's good there was a TV debate. I think more and more people are becoming aware that all this altered and destroyed " food " is just not good for us!! I saw an article that was trying bash organic and it really angered me because I'm sure the truth is that the non-organic, non-free range, really hate how popular organic, raw and free-range is becoming. I hope that brings the prices down eventually. Guest guest
My doctor told me to avoid artificial sweetners because they trick the brain. He didn't elaborate (and I didn't ask because I decided to just try to cut them), but I assume he meant they could also lead to an insulin release. I can't say I ever gained weight on them, but I CAN say they do cause me to crave carbs and sweet tasting things, real or artificial. I stopped them cold turkey and in 2 weeks, my cravings were gone, but it's SO easy to get sucked back into them! GRHH. Guest guest
Here's an interesting link. Mentions that high consumption of aspartame can cause Grave's. I was diagnosed with Grave's in 1993, and it's possible I was drinking a lot of diet drinks at that time. Hmmm. Anyway, natural is always better. I'd dump any unnatural sweeteners, including high fructose corn syrup. It's in everything, even bread! http://www.splendaexposed.com/ Granted, ice cream isn't exactly a health food, but when I did eat it, I just bought the full fat, regular sugar stuff. Pure stuff like Ben & Jerry's satisfied me with just a couple of tablespoons, whereas I'd have two bowls of the lowfat stuff before I was satisfied. > > Hi Barb. > > I am one of those people, who didn't know that artificial sweetners > led to weight gain. Guest guest
I had read that saccharin was less toxic than aspartame. Back when I taught college chem, I assigned the students to do a research project on aspartame (1990ish) and there was so little published research that the danger was not obvious even with extensive research into publications. I am glad that now there is info on the toxicity. Are you wanting to use saccharin? I have a cactus nectar that is used for sweetening that I got at a health food store and there is always stevia. -- Re: Re: High Fat Diet/ and everyone I read about the aspartame/Grave's connection in Shomon's new book Living Well with Grave's Disease and Hyperthyroidism " . Guest guest
Wonder what the difference is between us? I did strict Atkins induction, basically the same diet you described, same foods. In 2.5 months I lost only around 10 to 12 lbs. And I never lost my carb cravings, so eventually I could not stick with it. The only difference I see is I use heavy whipping cream in my coffee and salads and I do have to have fruits. I love fruit almost more than my old bread/candy addictions. I also eat ice cream. Guest guest
Isn't Atkins higher protein, which requires higher thyroid levels? Maybe dropping some protein and adding some more fats might help. What about switching from half and half to heavy whipping cream? When I first started the high fat diet I did not see how I could do without bread cause I buy that nice baked stuff at Whole Foods, chala or cherry bread or nut breads, etc. I love potatoes as well. When I got the terrible carb craving I made heavy whipping cream drink with vanilla and cinammon and sipped on it. Broda says to add a raw egg to it which I did at times. That did help. -- Re: Re: High Fat Diet/ and everyone Wonder what the difference is between us? I did strict Atkins induction, basically the same diet you described, same foods. Guest guest
I think those that have a better functioning thyroid would respond better to high protien/ low carb. I also didn't lose much more than a few pounds of water weight with Atkins, while even exercising quite a bit. Hopefully this is just because it was before I knew I had a thyroid/adrenal problem. I've started Broda's diet today. I'm going to be fairly liberal with it this week and go full course next week to get used to low carb which I ALWAYS struggle with. Maybe eating more fats will help. Guest guest
Sol, here is a short list of things you can try to lose weight. 1. Read labels and if it contains artificial sweeteners like high fructose corn syrup, aspartame, Splenda, sucralose or any artificial colors, don't eat it. Notice I did not say you couldn't eat real sugar. But do minimize your intake. A good example is spaghetti sauce; some brands have high fructose corn syrup, others plain sugar. 2. You cannot eat unlimited protein. I believe that is where the fault lies with Atkins' diet. The grams of protein you should eat per day should equal one-half your desired weight. If you want to weigh 120 lbs, eat only 60 grams of protein per day. 180 lbs your goal? Then eat 90 grams. The rest can be made up of good fats and non-starchy carbs, like nuts, seeds, olives, avocados, veggies, some fruit. You can eat all you want of these. 3. Minimize white flour carb intake: pasta, white bread, etc. 4. Listen to your body. Eat when you're hungry. Stop when you're full. 5. Eat as much fiber as possible. In other words choose the high fiber, whole grain bread over white. 6. Eliminate as much as possible all processed foods. Stick with food in its natural state. There is no such thing as a cookie or potato chip tree. 7. Have protein, carbs, fat, and fiber at each meal. 8. Minimize your dairy intake. Use cheese sparingly to flavor food, not as a major food source. Exercise alone will NOT work. You must change your diet. In fact, you should lose weight just following the suggestions above with no exercise. Guest guest
I craved carbs MORE on Atkins, I swear, and couldn't stay on it, either. But then, it's really an unnatural way to eat. I think the carb craving may because you need some carbs to make seratonin, so not eating ANY might actually increase carb cravings! I do much better just eliminating refined carbs and sticking to berries (low carb), veggies and a small amount of whole grain, like 1 slice Ezekiel bread of old fashioned oatmeal. Kathleen > > Wonder what the difference is between us? I did strict Atkins induction, > basically the same diet you described, same foods. In 2.5 months I lost > only around 10 to 12 lbs. Guest guest
I think that is true. The Metabolic Typing Diet Book says you can get the same cravings from either too many carbs or too few. The devil is in the details though. Trying to find one's best balance is not easy. I've been trying for the past year. I lack patience, and there are so many variables, which carbs, and at what time of day..........I'm finding I do better with no carbs in the am, little to none at lunch, and some little higher carb veg at dinner. I do not do well with fruit at all, unless eaten with protein and fat. Otherwise, my blood sugar goes nuts. I do know I personally need lots of protein, I get much worse when I cut back on protein, either deliberately or if just get sick of my safe foods. sol keickholt13 wrote: > I craved carbs MORE on Atkins, I swear, and couldn't stay on it, > either.
