Guest guest
Welcome aboard ! A two hour post prandial bs of 120 or lower is the goal you should strive to achieve. If you maintain this measure daily for three months your A1C will probably be 5.5 or lower. An A1C of 5.5 and lower will practically eliminate complications caused by diabetes. In fact an A1C nearer the normal A1C between 4.2-5.2 is an excellent way to stop the progression of present diabetic complications, and in many cases reverse some of them. If a diabetic is loosing vision due to diabetes, this level of A1C's may stop the progression of vision loss altogether. Unfortunately, if a person is already blind due to diabetes, I don't believe the vision can be restored, but it can certainly prevent the development of other serious complications like heart trouble, kidney trouble, impotence, and many others too numerous to count here. Carb counting is the way to go, and a carb count guide is available from us at your request. This carb counting guide was developed by a fellow list member Dean Masters. If your two hour post prandial bs level is above 120, it is most likely due to the consumption of too many grams of carbs, total grams of carbs that is. The preceeding statements were made by a bonifide sugar addict. Yours truly, Harry new member, > > I'm Shields and I'm a new member to this list. Guest guest
Wow, that brings back some great memories. I use to eat on average at least one half gallon of ice cream each week, and often I would eat two half gallons of the stuff. Of course I would wind down by eating a couple of candy bars like butterfingers and a BabeRuth along with a couple of beers or regular Cokes almost daily. My favorite time to eat ice cream was at night while watching television. My favorite ice cream was Toasted English walnut with a lot of chocolate syrupe on it. Needless to say, I don't do any of that any more. I am still busy paying the price for being a sugar addict. I can relate, since I had one nasty divorce, and it was definitely a mind bender. new member, > I'm Shields and I'm a new member to this list. Guest guest
Thanks Harry and all the rest of you for this fine welcome. And yes I'd like the carb counting guide please? send it to shoney.dog@.... Yeah Harry that ice-cream was good wasn't it? Fortunately my heart and kidnies are just fine. When I visited to New Brighton in October, Lynn my sweety and her daughter checked my sugar and found that one day it was 148 and the next day it was 132. Lynn suspected I was diabetic, since that's what her husband passed from 3 years ago. I returned to Colorado for the last time in late October and told my older sister that my sugar count was high and that I wanted to have it checked. All she said was just to continue eating that low fat stuff and I'd be fine. Well when I was diagnosed with diabetes on my birthday on February 15th, Lynn wasn't surprised. She thinks I might have had this for at least a couple of years, but even my new doctor can't say for sure when I contracted it. And just so you know, I'm a R O P baby, it use to be known as RLF. Take care. If I was as sure of God as I am about the ground beneath my feet, how often would I think of God? new member, >> >> I'm Shields and I'm a new member to this list. Guest guest
Hi Harry: Oh boy can I relate to you here. While I never ate gallons of ice cream, and I never liked beer, I think that I was born a chocoholic and French Fry addict. I adore cake with fluffy, sugary, buttery frosting, too, all of which I have given up since my diagnosis back in December. there are two benefits to my swearing off of regular Pepsi, every kind of chocolate candy imaginable, baked goods by the truckload and all of those wonderful carbs. The first is that I am slowly losing some weight that I've needed to get rid of for years and am not sleeping anywhere from twelve to sixteen hours in any given day. The second benefit to giving up all of that food that I love and still crave, some days more than others, is that my blood sugar has come down and is even more manageable with the help of medication and my A1C went from a 6.6 back in December to a 5.6 in March. So, despite the fact that I sat patiently by tonight at dinner while Bob stuffed himself with a piece of chocolate cake that he ordered for dessert and nearly drooled, I am seeing the results of my resolve to behave and leave the goodies for those whose systems can handle them. Guest guest
I know about RLF, but what does r o p stand for? The carb counting guide is on its way. Every body talks about low fat diets, but to a diabetic knowing the carb count is more important. Insulin works on carbs, not fat and not protein. I was diagnosed as a diabetic following my first heart attack in 1987. My cardiologist was right about one thing. He told me not to eat more than two ounces of fat at a single meal. He was right about the two ounces, but he should have said no more than two ounces of carbs at a single meal. The carbs consumed affects your lipid levels more so than the fat consumed. new member, >>> >>> I'm Shields and I'm a new member to this list. Guest guest
Me, too! I still have ice cream, but not very much and I eat it infrequently. I still crave ice cream, cakes, cookies, candy, and just about all kinds of carbs. I now try to keep my carb consumption to 50 ±10 grams per day, not per meal with some ocasional splurges like today at lunch, I had a small bowl of vanilla ice cream with some fresh strawberries on it. Of course since I inject Humalog insulin, this required me to use a lot more insulin today to cover the carbs consumed. I definitely do not recommend this as a habit. new member, >>> >>> >>>> I'm Shields and I'm a new member to this list. I was just >>>> diagnosed about 2 months ago with type 2 diabetes. Guest guest
Yup Harry, as you have said, " big numbers, big mistakes. Little numbers, little mistakes.. " (ROFL) It is, however, good to know that you too are subject to the human frailties as are the rest of us... You might be interested to know that there are some very good ice creams with a very low carb count. Next time I am in Wal-Mart I will take a carb survey of ice cream as I, unfortunately, can not remember the numbers or the brands. A regional ice cream shop named Braums does have some delicious ice cream with a carb coung of 3 grams per half cup. Now I do realize that a half cup is not a whole lot - but - it is far better than none... Take care my good friend, Cy, the Ancient Okie... Re: new member, Me, too! Guest guest
, I was given this advice by my diabetic nurse, not to use the index finger or thumb to test your own blood, being that both of these have most of your sensory nerve endings in the tips of your fingers. Guest guest
I agree with Cy for the most part except for his disparagement of " net carbs " . If you do your own figuring and know from whence the products came (U.S. and Canada and most of the rest of the world or Europe), net carbs *do* mean something. Don't trust the package, though -- with the exception, as I say, of products coming from the E U. For most of the world, if you take the " total carb " figure from the package, the " carbs of fiber " figure and subtract the latter from the former, you will get a " net carb " figure which, in my opinion, indicates fairly accurately the amount of carbohydrate that will affect your blood glucose level directly (fiber has an indirect effect to slow down how fast glucose is absorbed from the small intestine -- that's ani indirect effect in that fiber is passed through the small intestine without glucose absorption). On European products, while the packages list both total carbs and carbs of fiber, the total carbs figure has already had the carbs of fiber subtracted from it. Also, according to the American Diabetes Association, a good rule of thumb for how much glucose will get into your system from sugar alcohols is to take their carb values and halve them. Add this to the carbs in the item or meal to get an approximation of the carbs that will affect you. There's my $0.02 on the subject. Mike Freeman > Hi , > Yup, this term " sugar free " is very, very misleading. > As has pointed out it is the " total " carbs in a product which you > need to be concerned with. Also, the term " net " carbs is another misleading > piece of garbage. > The term " no sugar added " is equally bad as what it actually means is that > they have not added processed beet or cane sugar. Guest guest
: Icecream is definitely delicious although I'm kinda into brownies myself. You may find that as you cut back on the carbs, some of the cravings will diminish. You may find also that you have to play a few tricks on yourself such as redirection -- you know, when an adult redirects a toddler committing a no-no to something else interesting. But I never had many food cravings so can't truly speak to the issue. I'm also RLF/ROP and 57 but unlike you and many others on this list, I crashed into diabetes last year very suddenly and am, believe it or not, a late-onset Type 1. I told someone that I was glad to have some of the attributes of youth but would have appreciated a different choice than Type 1 diabetes. (grin) As the foregoing implies, I'm insulin-dependent and have been from landing in the hospital! You'll find much good advice and support here. You won't get people saying how wonderful it is to eat a steak the size of a postage-stamp; people really understand. <g> Mike Freeman > Becky I still crave the Icecream. Guest guest
Hi Mike, Well, as has been said before, you learn something every day. I need to think on what you have said about the European method of noting carbs. I would tend to agree with you on the fiber. The sugar alcohol and other " oses " can be a real sleeper though. Some advertising hypes really do push the " net " carbs to the limit. Best rule of thumb is to let common sense guide you. Cy, the Ancient Okie... Guest guest
Cy: This seems to be my day for arguing. YOu say that a half-cup is far better than none. I'm not so sure. Although I'm lucky enough to be able to eat a Schwan's Mississippi Mud ice-cream sandwich as a snack (one, not two as in days of youre), if I want ice-cream, I want Dryers Grand and a cereal-bowl-full. Otherwise, why bother? <g> Mike > Yup Harry, as you have said, " big numbers, big mistakes. Little numbers, > little mistakes.. Guest guest
I use insulin injections to handle carbs consumed. When I dose for net carbs my bs runs extremely high. Guest guest
You got that right! When it comes to ice cream a small bowl makes me want a gallon or two. I am addicted to sugar, and especially ice cream. When it comes to it, I am just like the alcoholic, who cannot stop at a couple of snorts of good whiskey, they have to have the whole fifth. new member, >>>> >>>> >>>>> I'm Shields and I'm a new member to this list. Guest guest
Shows how individual this disease of diabetes really is! I know this firsthand also as I can eat sandwiches which would sent to the hospital and she can drink milk in reasonable quantities and it sends me thru the roof! Ain't diabetes interesting! Guest guest
I rather blew the diet last week on the cruise I as on. I did eat desserts made w ith Splenda (or so the chef said), but also has a couple of bowls of frosty freeze chocolate ice cream. Also-much extra insulin! Re: new member, Me, too!
