Guest guest Report post Posted August 14, 2005 Just watch spiking those blood glucose levels above 160! For almost 16 years I had A1C levels below 6.0 by just taking an oral pill like Diabeta or the generic form glyburide, but I did not stop eating all the sugar I wanted like candy bars, cake, cookies, ice cream, and beer, one of my favorites. I don't know if that was one of the primary causes of my three heart attacks and two heart bypass surgeries, but I suspect it is so. I was always told by my doctor way back then that as long as I had an A1C level 6.0 or lower, I was good to go. So I did! Hi > Hi Harry, Thanks for those suggestions about testing and exercising. Guest guest Report post Posted August 14, 2005 Terri. as you cut your carbs back, you may also need to cut your medication back so be aware of that. This is why it is extremely important to keep your carbs at the same amount per meal such as 30. This way, you can adjust your medication to accommodate only 30 grams. Also keep some glucose tablets on hand for any lows. one glucose tablet raises your sugar typically 15 to 20 points and that is measurable. I.E if you are 60, eat 2 tabs and you will raise to 100. don't use juice, candy, sugared pop, etc. those raise your sugar but *do not* give you measurable results. You can purchase glucose tablets, a bottle of 50, at most stores like wallmart for around $4.99 for a bottle of 50. Regards, Hi Hi Harry, Thanks for those suggestions about testing and exercising. To answer your question about having any infections of any kind the answer is no. I will start testing more often. I'll keep you all posted. By the way I'm taking Metformen 2000 milligrams a day. Guest guest Report post Posted August 16, 2005 all foods you listed are good accept peanut butter. Most peanut butter is higher carb since they use sugar in it to sweeten it. I.E jiffy, peter pan peanut butter, etc. and those typically spike your bgs So that is all I would avoid. Yes, you perfectly understand what to purchase grin. Walnuts are a great low carb snack, dill pickles (not sweet), lettuce, cheese, etc. For a snack, prior to bed, you could make a lettuce taco. I.E two pieces of lettuce with cheese in it, turkey, some light mayo, or whatever. You could also have some olives as well since they are low carb too. Be creative and have fun and share with us what you come up with! As far as bread, find the bread in the store that is very low carb. My mom watches her carbs due to high trigliserite levels, she isnt' diabetic, and she is able to find low carb bread that tastes great having only 6 grams of quick acting carbs in it a slice. You are getting the drill down Terri! Nice job! Just bare in mind, that if your sugars were not running high, you could have 30 grams of quick acting carbs at a meal. For now though, until your doc increases your medication, they should be avoided at all cost. Regards, Hi Hi, I'll be going to the store tomorrow. Since my blood sugar readings are running high at the moment I was wondering what kind of things should I buy. I am assuming lots of vegetables eggs, cheese, walnuts, lettuce, pickles (dill I would assume. Would it be okay to buy things like celery, cucumbers, and green peppers for a salad. I was also wondering about low fat peanut butter and low fat cream cheese. And what about the Lee's Delightful bread. If anyone has any other suggestions as to what to get and what kind of things to avoid until I get back on track please let me know. Thanks. I also wanted to let you know that I put in a call tonight to the doctor's office. Hopefully, when they come in tomorrow they'll get the message and will return my call. I sure hope so because right now I feel like crap! Take care all. Terri

Guest guest Report post Posted May 10, 2007 I've just joined this group. I'm excited after reading some of the posts and the article by Anne Lamott. There really is hope! I'm 53 years old, live in Queens, New York, and I've been dieting on and off since about age 21. I'm not terribly overweight now--about 155 this morning. (I have to stop myself from getting on the scale, but haven't stopped yet.) I was having a lot of trouble with Weight Watchers lately. You only get about 900-1200 calories a day at my weight. I use up half or more before lunch. Then I either felt like I was off the diet and would start again tomorrow--permission to overeat--or I would try to eat very little for the rest of the day, and end up overeating in the evening anyway. I want to try intuitive eating. I read the IE book and am starting to write in a journal for the first time in years. I'm journaling mostly about eating issues but other stuff comes up too. For the first week I am trying the idea of waiting 3-4 hours between meals or snacks because mostly I am not hungry when I eat. I am bored, anxious or just feel a compulsive feeling--I have to eat now. I'm also on an antidepressant, an SSRI, and I'm afraid this may not work so well for me because the pill seems to interfere with the natural sensations of hunger and fullness. More later--If I don't get ready for work, being overweight won't be my biggest problem. Thanks to all of you.
