Guest guest
Some times one just has to grin and bare it. One of the worse illnesses I ever had was a cold which sapped my energey for several days and even caused me to go to the emergency room for a checkup, since I felt like I was dieing at the time. In the morning after I had a shower and dressed I barely had enough energy to dial the telephone in order to call in sick. Plenty of hot soup and rest and sleep was the key for me getting better. It was almost a week before I was able to function half way normal. Then after three or four more days, I was able to go to work. I hope you both get better soon. Guest guest
You just make note of it in your mind. Remember it is recommended to stick to a fixed number of grams of carbs consumed in the beginning until one has mastered dosing with fast-acting insulin like Humalog or Novolog. Balancing the use of fast-acting insulin along with the use of long-acting insulin like Lantus is a balancing act, since one may affect the other. It is kind of like walking a tight rope. It is recommended to start with a 1:15 ratio and work up or down according to the way carb consumption is handled in conjunction with your long acting insulin like Lantus or Humalin-N. When one refuses to follow this instruction, the best I can do is just point out the insulin to carb consumed ratio that one is actually using. Once one has masgtered the 15 gram consumption and insulin dosage, then they can double it, but just jumping around from one carb consumption to another insulin dosage, insures one that it will take a longer time to master the minimum amount of fast-acting insulin to handle 15 grams of carbs. The underlying assumption is that one knows how to count grams of carbs consumed and how to count the dose of insulin used. It also assumes you have the power to change your dose of fast-acting insulin as well as the power to change your dose of long-acting insulin, whenever it is necessary. Guest guest
Yes, I know about Atrial fibrillation. What I can tell you about it is not worth disclosing, since it is not much. The best thing to do if one is having Atrial fibrillation difficulties is to consult their cardiologist. Guest guest
Well, one can learn some things for sure. A ratio of 1:5 or slightly more did not work, since your bs reading went up. Humalog 4 units to 21 grams of carbs is slightly more than a 1:5 ratio. Now when it comes to an already high bs reading and you consume 44 grams of carbs and dose 7 units of Humalog, I think your bs will continue to go up, since this is equivalent to a 1:6 or slightly more ratio. I recommend you read this entire message thread and especially heed the recommendations on the last message. Re: Regulating 's blood sugar > > >> You just make note of it in your mind. Guest guest
: This is none of my business, but I am very curious how you are currently calculating the amount of humalog that you are taking with your meal. I assume that you have a target blood sugar reading, let us say 100 - which would be 5.5 under your system. Therefore, you would take enough humalog to cover your current meal carbs. In addition, your humalog would be adjusted for a beginning reading higher or lower than your target blood sugar goal. This is the way I try to do it, sometimes more successfully than others. I do not see a pattern like this and I am just curious how you are approaching the issue. Again, this is none of my business, so feel free to ignore my intrusion. I look forward to continuing to be educated. Guest guest
Marvin, You make an excellent point and I agree with you. As far as I can see has not established a target goal of 5.5 and there is no consistency in her carb consumption or her insulin dosing. I do not believe she is aware that the balancing act requires consistency, since one is not only trying to cover prandial carbs, but also interacting with the basal dose of long-acting insulin. As long as she persists or insists on varying her carb consumpption and varying her insulin dosage, I fear we are in for the very long hall, and even then, mastery would be questionable. In order to determine the correct basal dose of insulin and the prandial dose of insulin requires consistency for at least a short while; say at least a week or so. I hope is willing to try a consistent approach to blood glucose mastery. If she does, she will find she can gain mastery in a few weeks instead of the several months, which seems to be the track we are presently on.
