Wow, that picture's awesome!

By the way, my personal opinion (mostly based on list history) is that

political discussions on NN are fine if they are 1) related to the non-political

subject matter (IOW political but relating to food, nutrition, health,

dietary/nutritional anthropology, etc) or 2) occur spontaneously from following

out

tangents from on-topic threads. #2 describes probably 90% of the political

discussion we've had, and sometimes in the past its been necessary to debate

political principles divorced from the original context as one of those

tangents, to

isolate the principle that is indeed relevant to the original discussion.

I think political discussion has calmed down a lot on this list since

nt_politics has become a LOT more active than it was, and has largely diffused

the

political activity on this list.

And some people were afraid that the socialist, Kerry, was going to be in

the Whitehouse. I, however, was not one of them, as I had more faith in freedom

loving Americans then that.

Now, can we not be political anymore? Some people who join these groups do not

appreciate potentially inflammatory and controversial subject matter....would

like to stay on topic or related, at least.

I think that is the most thoughtful thing to do myself.

POLITICS - New Warning From Center for Disease Control

The Center for Disease Control has issued a warning about a new

virulent strain of sexually transmitted disease. This disease is

contracted through dangerous and high risk behavior.

The disease is called Gonorrhea Lectim (pronounced " gonna re-elect him " ).

Many victims have contracted it after having been screwed for the past

4 years, in spite of having taken measures to protect themselves from

this especially troublesome disease.

Cognitive sequellae of individuals infected with Gonorrhea Lectim

include, but are not limited to: Anti-social personality disorder

traits; delusions of grandeur with a distinct messianic flavor;

chronic mangling of the English language; extreme cognitive

dissonance; inability to incorporate new information; pronounced

xenophobia; inability to accept responsibility for actions;

exceptional cowardice masked by acts of misplaced bravado;

uncontrolled facial smirking; ignorance of geography and history;

tendencies toward creating evangelical theocracies; and a strong

propensity for categorical, all-or nothing behavior.

The disease is sweeping Washington. Naturalists and epidemiologists

are amazed and baffled that this malignant disease originated only a

few years ago in a Texas Bush.

-------------------

I don't know. Can we be apolitical? This list is often just that -

political. That's why the tag is in the subject header. (But maybe

you are new?) That way, if you want to filter the political stuff,

you can. But obviously, this is satire, the most innocuous and

entertaining sort of politics engaged in here. It could actually be

funny even, whereas often our political debates are heated.

But alas, only is the List God. If HE has problems with it, then

he can swat me directly for it. But if you don't like politics, then

delete it.

Honestly, I only enjoyed the humor of it all by itself, that's all.

IMO, it's one thing when a thread starts on topic and drifts into politics,

but entirely another to start a new thread with an off-topic post consisting

of little more than a litany of insulting overgeneralizations wrapped in a

thin veneer of humor. But that's just me.

I use a Webster's. Perhaps you should check your dictionary.

The way you determine if a person is a Fascist, Socialist, etc, is not based on

any emotion that you may be feeling at any given moment. Getting mad at a

leader of a sovereign nation for not bending over (or for any other reason) to a

body of people...say the UN, for example...or any other nation...who would just

as soon screw one while one was bent over...does not make one a Fascist.

If you look up the definition of Fascist, you clearly would find that

Bush is not a Fascist, unless you are adept at blinding yourself to the truth.

Being the leader of a sovereign nation and making decisions based on that fact

and in order to keep that nation sovereign and safe, does not by definition make

one a Fascist...and neither does your or anyone else's opinion.

However, if you look up the definition of a Socialist and check a certain

person's voting record, you would clearly see that by definition, that certain

person is a Socialist.

'nuff now?

____

I don't think anyone's opinion really matters if they aren't prepared to back

it up, but if it's true that Kerry advocates state ownership of the

means of production and distribution or the abolition of private property, then

it

behooves you to offer some support for such a bold claim.

While it is quite obvious, to anyone who actually takes the terms seriously

and uses them as they are meant instead of as a means of disparagement through

exaggeration, that Kerry and W. Bush are not socialists or

Socialists, it's also true that *both* of them support *some* state ownership of

production and distribution. For example, both of them support state-ownership

of

the military. Both of them support taxation and various forms of

redistribution.

So, either we use the definition of socialism in an absolute sense and admit

for seriousness's sake that neither of them are socialists, or we use the term

to address a partial influence in their polices that can be quantified as to

its magnitude. If we do the latter, then there is no *qualitative* difference

between Bush's socialism and Kerry's socialism, but only a quantitative

difference.

And, since the amount of money as a percentage of the total and in absolute

amounts flowing through the Federal government has increased by an incredible

margin under Bush, it is arguable that on quantitative grounds Bush is more

socialist than Clinton, although we don't really have quantitative information

about what a Kerry presidency would have wound up with available for comparison.

Unless you have something from Kerry's voting record, such as a vote to take

over Exxon or to turn over GM and Ford to democratic worker's collectives, I

don't see how you could make qualitative claims about Kerry's socialism being

greater than Bush's.

If that's true, perhaps you could look up Kerry's voting record and

offer maybe three, or at least one, example(s) of votes that indicate that

Kerry believed 1) that the state should own the means of production and

distribution or 2) that private property should be abolished.

Since 's position, that such votes do not exist, could not be proven

without providing every single vote, the burden is on you to prove a positive,

rather than on to prove a negative.

Once you can do such, we'd have to examine whether those votes are

qualitatively any closer to socialism than policies advocated by Bush.

If that's true, then you must have a profoundly different conception of

liberty than W. Bush. Bush is by no means a strict

Constitutionalist, and I can't for the life of me find where in the Constitution

_____

I don't think those are simple questions to answer, since we'd have to look

at the idea of public vs. private ownership of the government. This isn't a

subject I've studied in any great depth, but Hans Hermann-Hoppe makes the case

in _Democracy: The God that Failed_ that the idea of the state as publicly

owned and identified with the population itself is a modern concept.

There was certainly taxation before socialism existed, or socialist movements

existed, although I think the concept of taxation historically has been very

different than the modern one although I think that's occurred from the advent

of constitutionalism rather than socialism.

So no, I don't think that taxation or state-owned military are dependent on

socialism and those were probably bad examples.

However, I do think that previous to the 20th century the idea of what was

legitimate use of taxes was quite different than what we have now, and I do

think that the idea of the welfare state resulted from an interaction between

socialism and classical capitalism.
