Guest guest
I'm not sure what your quotated thing meant, lol, but unfortunately the pertussis vaccine is only 50-70% effective, per CDC's own data. That's one of the things they need to stop falsely pushing, that vaccines equate to no disease outbreak. I think it's wrong for anyone to be pushing a 100% pro/con vaccine plan. It's a medical procedure & should be about individual, personalized health care needs. Debi >> Kassiane > who near died from whooping cough caught from an > " OMGZVACCINESEATBABIES! Guest guest
I am very confused when it comes to vaccines. My daughter is 6 and was dx with autism 4 1/2 years ago. I was going crazy to just " fix " her that all I paid attention to was therapy. Now, I have a 14 month old who I have also vaccinated only because I really seriously did not know (too busy in therapy world) until I saw a special on vaccinations and the whole controversy. I have a couple of friends who are not vaccinating. And they have given me links ex. K.N.O.W. And it has helped me understand the pro's and con's. I JUST HOPE AND PRAY TO GOD EVERYDAY THAT IT IS NOT TOO LATE. I WILL NEVER FORGIVE MYSELF FOR IT. > >> Kassiane > > who near died from whooping cough caught from an > > " OMGZVACCINESEATBABIES! Guest guest
I have a daughter who got all her shots on time. She did have a reaction to MMR -- measles rash, moderate/high fever, malaise, fussiness for about 3 days. She does have respiratory stuff since about 15 mos, she's now 10 and still has some. Other than that, she's fine. Allie was developing normally and got a hepB at 9 mos, within about 2 wks lost all babble/language, stopped eating, pulling up, began staring off in into space, etc. My five yr old has never been immunized and I have complete peace in not having had her immunized; I still research & pray about if/when we should. I would never say I would never immunize, but I do say I will carefully question before ever getting my kids or self another one. The risk has to be so great that I feel it's necessary. Pertussis is very scary, but like I think Sondra has shared that her child got it while an infant, after being immunized, as do many infants. Two of my kids have had pertussis, one was immunized, one wasn't. They were 3 & 7 at the time, so it wasn't anything horrific, like a lingering case of bronchitis. And now we can mark that off the " need to " list. Two of my 3 kids have had chicken pox, I'd far rather them have it naturally than get the immunization. Polio isn't contracted in this nation, except through the oral, so unless we travel to Africa isn't not a concern. There are plenty of people who get meningitis who are immunized, so I'm not convinced that vaccine even works enough to overlook the risks. HepB is only contracted through blood/semen exchanges, so that's not even a concern at this time for any of us. The gardasil vaccine is a total joke in my op. There ain't no way I would EVER get the rotavirus, the last one killed several infants, i don't know what the track record is on this latest one, but I wouldn't trust offit more than I could throw him. And I won't even get started on the flu vaccine. BTW, it's not YOUR fault. You were being a good mom, stop beating up yourself. You are only human and can only do so much. Guest guest
My quote means this winter (march or so) I got pertussis from kids who were brought to the gym while coughing, who werent vaccinated because their mom thinks vaccines ALWAYS cause, ALWAYS, problems worse than they prevent, and to hell with everyone else if they get sick from her kids. So I was coughing and turning blue and having seizures and dislocated 6 ribs at once, which is a great way to puncture a lung. And I was pretty displeased when she said that *I* shouldn't go to gymnastics if I'm prone to getting sick. Like, hello? Who's kids took it there? Guest guest
There's no longer thimerosol in vaccines. And there are worse things than being autistic, anyway. Lots of worse things. But damn, making us sound like a tragedy of the highest order is sure a way to make a girl feel like leaving a list. Kassiane --- nevaehlopez6 wrote: > I am very confused when it comes to vaccines. Guest guest
Kassi, I don't think that Debi was trying to say that autism is a tragedy of the highest order. I think what she's really saying is that if we're doing something that causes it, that's not a very nice thing to do to someone. As far as thimerosol, it's still in some vaccines like the flu shot. And there's some controversy about whether it's really been completely removed from all the rest. To me the big deal with the shots is that the studies that have been done so far " proving they're safe " actually only state that they didn't find that they were unsafe.... requiring more research. That doesn't give you the most comfortable feeling. And given the numerous drugs and vaccines that have been removed in recent years due to serious problems you really can't take anything for granted. I'm interested in your pertussis experience. Had you been vaccinated against it previously? I'm just curious because if you had and you still got it from these unvaccinated kids, that would only lend to the point Debi was trying to make that the vaccine isn't extremely effective. I'm so sorry that you got so terribly ill from it? It sounds like a very scary episode. And you're right that the parents you were dealing with really take the cake! Re: Re: Autism: To Vaccinate Or Not to Vaccinate There's no longer thimerosol in vaccines. And there are worse things than being autistic, anyway. Lots of worse things.
But damn, making us sound like a tragedy of the highest order is sure a way to make a girl feel like leaving a list. Kassiane --- nevaehlopez6 wrote: > I am very confused when it comes to vaccines. Guest guest
Kassi -- All parents worry about their kids. We worry when they have a fight with their best friend. We worry when their teacher looks at them funny. We worry about them not having their sweater at school when it's 72 degrees. We worry about *everything*. Parents of kids who are having a hard time worry 10 times as much. It's not just autism -- it's everything -- ADD, not enough friends, too many friends (social butterfly), not very attractive, too attractive, not dating, dating, bad grades, let alone drugs, alcohol, sexuality, defiance, illnesses, their future, etc. And our guilt is enormous if our kid is having problems. Sometimes it shouldn't be -- sometimes whatever is happening is far beyond our control, but we feel guilty anyway. My kid is a fantastic wonderful kid, but the autism makes his life harder and sometimes that makes me sad and sometimes it makes me angry. On the other hand, I often meet " normal " kids every day who are rotten little turds. I'll take my kid any day over them! Anyway, my point is, please have patience with us parents. You're right, autism isn't the worst thing that can happen to our kids -- talk to any mom of a child with a terminal illness or who's been abducted or any of the awful things that happen to kids and you'll agree. But we worry about those things too! Parents are a bundle of worry, guilt, fear, and love, courage, determination, and frustration and selflessness and a whole lot more worry. So don't take it personally. We hate *everthing* that makes our kids' life's harder. Thanks for reminding us that our kids are a whole lot more than autism. -- Cassie Kassi wrote: > There's no longer thimerosol in vaccines. And there > are worse things than being autistic, anyway. Guest guest
Debi isn't who I was referring to. It's the general attitude. That wasn't even the email I was responding to. I didn't get the full pertussis series because I'm allergic to the tetanus portion...but I was vaccinated " enough " in theory. I was also 24 when I got it, and immunosuppressed (prednisone, because of adrenal failure). It was AWFUL! And I know vaccines aren't 100% effective by a long shot, but there are diseases where the risks of the disease are SO much worse than the risks of the vaccine. The chicken pox shot for children I STILL don't understand. And flu shots unless you're old, totally don't get it. But like stuff that killed children, totally, unless there is a reason to believe there is a significant risk. If I could afford to get my titres tested I would to see if they need to redo any of mine, but if NONE of them took I may be like one of my friends in whom they just flat out don't take...he needs customized immunoglobulin for anything to take (discovered during a rabies series after a raccoon bite, what a way to find out!). Blah. And vaccines are such a charged issue anyway. Kassiane --- The Jueschkes wrote: > Kassi, > > I don't think that Debi was trying to say that > autism is a tragedy of the highest order. Guest guest
Kassi, Oops, sorry I focused just on that one post. But, I do see that there was a general thing going on. You really did touch on something that's an issue for parents vs. the person who actually has autism. Parents feel it's our duty to " fix " everything while the person affected just sees it as a part of themselves and probably would be offended thinking all these people are walking around trying to " fix " it. When I look at my girls I can see aspects of their personality that probably really are attached to their autism. And I wouldn't ever want those things to change in them. For instance, they're both so naive and innocent. It's really sweet. My mom has bipolar disorder and there are very wonderful things about who she is that are actually probably part of the disorder. It's hard to balance all that good with all the bad that comes with it. But in her case it's very clear that you have to do away with the bad or the quality of her life suffers terribly. I suppose I keep my eye out for those sorts of things in autism too. Re: Re: Autism: To Vaccinate Or Not to Vaccinate Debi isn't who I was referring to. It's the general attitude. Guest guest
I am just trying to be real... You can speak to any parent that has just found out the their child has autism and they can tell you that to THEM at the moment it is the worst thing that can happen and they want to " fix " it. For me... Autism is very different. My daughter was walking, talking smiling, blowing kisses and then EVERYTHING STOPPED! As a parent you want to get this little girl back and you try everything in your power to do that. Trust me I know now that autism is not the worst thing in the world, but it is the worst thing in my world to know that if something ever happens to me right now my daughter would not be able to dress herself in the morning or tie her shoes by herself, wash her hair. So to me in MY world it is the worst. I love my daughters and I wouldn't change them for the world, but I cannot lie to you and say that if their was a cure for autism I wouldn't be the first in line to get it. And I will do anything to prevent my 14 month old daughter from suffering like Nevaeh has. > > Kassi, > > Oops, sorry I focused just on that one post. Guest guest
I think it's also one thing to know a child is born healthy. It's quite another to have a healthy child who becomes sick. Those sick characteristics often create this word called autism. And, oftentimes, when those sick characteristics are treated, this thing called autism lessens/goes away. I've said it before & say it again, I want my daughter to have the choice to be who she wants, not forced. If she chooses not to communicate that's one thing, but being forced to not communicate is quite another. Debi > > I am just trying to be real... Guest guest
It's the same little girl. There's just a new label on her. Can't cure me without fundamentally changing who I am. Unless you're doing that sloppy language thing where you say " autism " but mean " everything that bothers me about my kid, most of which isn't autism at all " . Catastrophizing much? Your daughter will never tie her shoes so this is the worst thing ever? Perspective, it's our friend, and I hope to God that your kid doesn't know you are so desperate for another kid in her body.
