Hate to say it- but I don’t care.

She has VERY LITTLE experience, is a republican, is anti-choice, is pro-guns and she is under investigation for firing someone for not hiring her brother-in-law.

She has a son with Downs and all. But, this woman has president would be the end of the United States for me.

OK- I just heard her speech.

I don’t believe she said anything about Downs, Autism, Disabilities, right for the disabled.... Etc.

Her son is MONTHS old and has Downs. The newscasters mentioned it.

She seems like a nice woman, but I don’t want her making decisions for me or my family. She was a journalism major in Idaho!

Barack went to Harvard and ran the Harvard Law Review (I think that’s what it’s called- not sure- I was a communications major myself).

I’m insulted that McCain thinks I’m so shallow as to vote for a woman JUST because she’s a woman. Or should I saw I would vote for him because I’m impressed that an 72 year old man has a woman as his backup.

Sara has what--- 4 months in the “disability world”? Don’t see much struggle there. She said her son was “perfect”. Which is an awesome attitude. But, she doesn’t has any experience (as far as I know) struggling as a parent.

I’m at this point where I think Autism is secondary. We have an environment to clean up, a war to stop and an economy to fix...... I just drove from coast to coast and there are a lot of poor people in this country who need jobs, a good education system and peace.

Ok- off my soapbox.

One last thing- my son wants Obama too. We’ve been watching all the coverage together.

- on her way back to NY State today!

According to wikipedia, and other articles, the " investigation " of

her is a little different than described. Some Republicans have been

our strongest allies. Sheila

I bet Palin has no clue what is like to raise a child with a disability... she is in for a ride of a lifetime... where WILL she find the time? to give this kid the chances he deserves? I am waiting to see if this kid was vaccinated???? I would love to hear a reporter ask her this question????????? "excuse me, Govennor palin,, with the rise in autism and many parents concerned over the possible link from childhood vaccines.. did you vaccinate your new baby?"

Re: Mc Cains possible VP Pick - Mom with Downs syndrome child?

hi.. I am PRO CHOICE.... I am sure.. if they are elected.. I will be curious on the services this kid gets... want to know her struggles... ect... She has pros and cons... let's see if she LISTENS to the parents. She will be wearing our shoes... what if her kid becomes autistic during her years as VP if elected? This is sooooooooooooooooooooooo possible.. I know the child already had the HEP B vaccine.. unless she said NO!!!!! Lia

Re: Mc Cains possible VP Pick - Mom with Downs syndrome child?

Oh come on people. She just got picked. Why are you so quick to judge

her. I found her speech very uplifting compared to the other ones I've

heard. Yes she does have a baby w/ Downs Syndrome. Yes he is only 2

months old. But what better speaker for children w/ disabilities than a

Mom who is actually living with it. Let's all cut the crap in this

election with the Dems and Repubs. Let's do the right thing this time. Finally the voice of a woman and especially a Mom to 5 children. Let's

just give her a chance. How can you judge someone before you know what

they stand for. I for one will be listening intentley for answers to my

questions. And NO I won't be listening to the Dems who will be wanting

to smear her. It's the good ole boys time to move over and let a womans

opinions be voiced.

I'm also glad she is against abortion. We are all trying to save the

lives of our Autistic children and give them hope. How can we want hope

for some children and death for others. Also she mentioned that her Son

joined the army last year and will be deployed to Iraq on Sept. 11. Tell me she doesn't want this war to end. PLEASE JUST GIVE HER A CHANCE

TO GET HER VIEWS ACROSS. Use our brains and don't be swayed by any of

these media people. We all have until Nov. 4 to make an educated

decision. Read, Read, Read unstead of listening to the media.

My apologies if this has already been mentioned (I haven't finished reading all of today's EOHarm postings yet), but what struck me ODD about Sara Palin was reading today (tho' I can't recall exactly where), that she went back to work a mere 3 DAYS after Trig was born!! How can you hope to "bond" with your kid, if you leave them that early? That does not auger well for doing right by kids with disabilities.

I don't know much about this women, except what I've read today.But....I can't imagine any Governor having an abortion while in office, for whatever reason. If it were found out, they're reputation would be screwed. Add to that the child had Down's..she'd have even more people against her. Like I said, I don't know her. Who knows the real reason she kept the baby, and didn't choose an abortion. I didn't know about the beauty queen part until I read it here, but how can anyone leave their newly born child at 3 days of age? That's what hit me! Hell, how long did we have to fight to get decent maternity leaves from work? When my oldest sons were born, paid mat leave in Ontario was 17 weeks or so, now it is a more kid-friendly year-long leave.

Aasa

P.S., Besides, nature has its only little way of making sure most moms cannot stray too far from home easily, shortly after giving birth: all that ensuing bleeding. That's what I hated the most after any/all of my pregnancies, the 6-week-looong "period" afterward. If I had gone back to work after 3 days, I would have likely gotten fired for spending too much time in the bathroom, aside from being a bit of a wreck from too little sleep. Sorry guys, (to the male readers here, especially), but that's the reality of giving birth. I just can't wrap my head around how someone could even physically go back to work (unless you're working from home, I suppose), 3 days after giving birth.

Lenny,

I have nothing against Sara Palin, and only mentioned what I did, because I find it difficult to imagine how a new mom (even if it's for the 5th time) could leave her baby to return to work when her child was only 3 days old. I've got 5 kids too, and would not have returned to work that soon after giving birth to any of them. I think in some "developing" countries, that sort of thing happens out of economic "necessity"/ more like poverty, or your family will not have food if you don't get your butt back to work asap after childbirth.

Lenny, you made a great point. Dads do and can play an important part in their kids' development, if they are offerred the opportunity to do so. Here in Ontario, we not only have maternity leave, but there is also a window of opportunity for paternity leave, where fathers can take over and still get a percentage of their previous pay to look after their chidren. This opportunity probably does not get used as often as it could be.

Still, when babies are only a few days old, it would make sense for mom to be at home or at least be readily available for breastfeeding purposes. Dads, unfortunately, cannot do that, at least not yet.

Sorry, these are my "opinions", and there at least a few decades of experience behind them. At the same time, I look forward to others' opinions on this matter and am willing to consider them and change my own opinion, if need be.

I find it a little surprising how some are so quick to go for thethroat without knowing much about her (or her mothering habits). Perhaps the kids are bonded with dad. Why isn't anyone scratching hiseyes out? I found Kim Stagliano's Huffington piece particularly cattyand partisan, too. Palin may end up being a strong advocate for ourcommunity, like as in staunch conservative Dan Burton. Or maybe not.Time will tell and there is no need to rush to the negative, is there? Shame on you Kim, retract those nails. . .Lenny>> My apologies if this has already been mentioned (I haven't finishedreading all of today's EOHarm postings yet), but what struck me ODDabout Sara Palin was reading today (tho' I can't recallexactly where) , that she

Even at that rate, a couple of weeks is too many weeks/months too few. Do you get any sort of government-funded maternity benefits in the USA? I am asking this now because I have seen too many odd replies here recently. Why are women returning to their jobs so quickly after giving birth? Do you not get any percentage of your pay from your previous job while you are on maternity leave?

Just wondering and trying to understand this all,

I can tell you that being in certain jobs makes it VERY difficult NOT to return within a very short time - I have seen some senators return after one or two days. So - 3 days was a little better in my book. I'm sure she wanted to be off longer BUT if you are in leadership - you can't leave that spot empty for very long no matter what. It's like the olympians pushing through injuries - they do it even though its better not to. you only get one shot.

Hi Aasa,

If a doctor writes you out they have to let you off work as long as you have sick pay you will get paid. Some companies do offere maternity leave but it is not required to be paid or of any certain length. It just means the company will hold your job open for you. Some people are fortunate to have short term disability which pays 66% of your wages and if your company provides it at their cost you have to pay taxes. If you buy it, its not taxable to you. Then there is FMLA if you work in a large enough company. That means you can apply to be off work for your or a dependent's medical condition; but its unpaid also and I think its a maximum of 12 months.

I was an attorney and for my first I had 6 weeks unpaid, with disability insurance provided for my first child. The disability kicked in after the first week, so I ended up with roughy half my "insured amount" for 5 weeks. It was not quite half my pay and at that time I was not making much.

For my second child I was on my own, was not expecting a baby, and had nothing in place to cover the leave.

I have to say that being in an elected position is probably the same - there are people who have problems and its the governor's job to listen and try to help. If she didn't - what would people do? (as an aside with my second I had a scheduled c-section and there was a client who tracked me down in the hospital and harrassed me to do legal work for them then told me, "It must be nice to take time off" - then promptly fired me and stiffed me on a $465 invoice. It was a FEMALE.)

Even though I don't know her - I'm sure Gov Palin did the best she could and maybe she took her baby to work with her. Its VERY possible; I did that with both of mine as well as working at home whenever I could.

Lujene,

You are right, it probably has nothing to do with anything. Sorry if this offended anyone. I am just so leery(as we probably all are) of who really runs this country and how it is run

and for all the discussion that goes back and forth on this list--how much can any leader do really, without the backing of the big corporations?

Subject: Re: Mc Cains possible VP Pick - Mom with Downs syndrome child? To: EOHarm Date: Saturday, August 30, 2008, 1:34 AM

Maurine,What in the world does THAT have to do with anything?? There is a Mom among us on this EOH board that holds numerous beauty titles...she still has all of the crowns, banners and trophies to prove it. She is a life-long Republican, too. And if you were to ask her, she would tell you unequivocally that all of it means NOTHING!! Because when her child was vaccine-injured she stood shoulder-to- shoulder with other Moms and Dads, many of them life-long Democrats and demanded accountability (often very loudly) from our Republican controlled government. When it came to her child, beauty titles and politics (or anything else from her life before the "A" word) meant NOTHING!! So it is patently unfair to make assumptions or cast aspersions on Gov. Palin because she won a beauty pageant long before she entered politics or became a mother.Furthermore, I can tell you for a FACT that Hillary

has done MORE to harm our cause than help it (ask Bobbie Manning how many times we have met with her office). Not quite as overt as Bill Frist but damn close! She, under her husband's administration, PUSHED the vaccine agenda and helped push for MILLIONS of OUR tax dollars for GAVI (Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations) which has had the single most powerful influence on allowing this travesty to continue. Actions speak louder than words.I like the fact that Gov. Palin is NOT a Washington insider. I like the fact that she has already proven she is willing to buck her own party and the party line when she thinks they are wrong. I like someone who won't go along to get along...a Maverick Mama (nod of recognition and respect to my dear friend, Barbara Fischkin). I like the fact that she is a mother...and hopefully a mother who can understand our heartbreak and frustration of raising a

special needs child. Even if she doesn't do a 10 second sound bite in time for the evening news uttering the "A" word...as long as she will listen and ACT in the best interests of our children then I'm willing to reserve judgment. As for me...I am now officially a member of the Mommy Party - any candidate that will ACT in the best interests of our children and FOLLOW THROUGH will have my vote and financial support regardless if they are an ass or an elephant.Lujene >> she was also a beauty queen in the past.> This probably has no relevance to what you just wrote, but I just think it's odd.> M>

Yes I agree with you Aasa, I had a c-section and was in the hospital for

7 days and couldn't imaging going back to work physically I would have never

lasted.

I just can't wrap my head around how someone could even physically go back to work (unless you're working from home, I suppose), 3 days after giving birth.

http://en.wikipedia .org/wiki/ _PalinAccording to wikipedia, and other articles, the "investigation" of her is a little different than described. Some Republicans have been our strongest allies. Sheila> >> > Hate to say it- but I don’t care.> > > > She has VERY LIT
