Guest guest
Cy, I bought some low carb bread yesterday. It is Homepride wheat. It says that it has 8 carbs per slice. I made a open face breakfast meal thia morning of one slice of toast, with no butter, three pieces of canadian bacon , about the size of a pop can. and a slice of cheese, and a cup of coffee. I figure that I had 8 carbs in total. Thanks, Jerry Crystal > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hey All! > > > > > Crystal went to the doctor today and we have a new problem - low > > > > > > blood sugar!! Guest guest
Ah, nice low carb breakfast. good job. BTW watch the canadian bacon they use sugar in it to make it sweet tasting so try to get regular bacon instead IMO. Guest guest
Hi there, Lee's Delightful Wheat bread is 9 grams per slice and tastes very good also. It is available at most stores. They also have a delightful white bread but I like wheat better. Guest guest
not bad, thanks Sharon... BTW how are your sugars doing and are you getting through the rough time in your life ok? Guest guest
Hi , My sugars are doing better as a whole. I've been looking for the carb counting guide because I had it in my computer but I haven't been able to find it. I'm surviving one day at a time thanks for asking. Sometimes I do some stress eating and my sugars go up and I'm really trying very hard not to do that. I've been reading everything you guys put out there on the list and believe it or not I feel like you're my family. Thanks to everyone for being there for all of us who need you. I hope I can do as much for someone someday as you all have done for me just by helping. My doctor wants to split my Lantus in half and try that for awhile because in the morning my sugars are good but by nighttime they are creeping up. What do you think of that? I asked about Humalog but they want to try this first. Anyway, again thanks for being there everyone, and I may have some questions from time to time. Guest guest
Hi Sharon. Splitting the lantus with a type 2 diabetic is common practise and can work for some so try it out. The best option though is to get off the oral meds and onto humalog and lantus if you get to the point it is to difficult to control your sugars via oral meds and lantus. BTW hang in there! One day at a time. Guest guest
Thanks . You mean I should go strictly to the two kinds of insulin and not take the glucophage and glyburide anymore if I can't control the blood sugars? There are times when my sugar is controlled quite nicely It just creeps up at night. I sometimes don't get home until 6 or 7:00 from work then I have to fix dinner. Then I'm wondering if I go to bed too soon after dinner and could that be one reason my sugar stays high or creeps up at night? By the morning it's pretty normal about 120 or less. I notice that stress plays a part in how high my sugar is too. Guest guest
Sharon, At first I was quite concerned about my doctor recommending I qquit all my oral medications at the time last August of glyburide and Actos and go strictly on injectible insulin. I was started first on Lantus and later Humalog was added for meal coverage of carbs consumed. In a matter of three months on strictly insulin only Lantus and Humalog I went from an A1C of 9.2 to an A1C of 5.7. Since I am insulin resistant, I require a lot more insulin than a person who is not insulin resistant. Count those carbs consumed and dose Humalog to cover them, and you will be under control in no time. Be sure to have glucose tablets on hand to deal with the low sugar reactions you may have. Guest guest
yes, if you cannot control your blood sugar, pre meal 80 2 hour post meal 120 or less, go on the two types of insulin, humalog for carbs/meals and lantus, and pitch the oral medications. I have many type 2 friends that use insulin to get tighter control instead of oral meds. In fact, one of my type 2 friends is even on an insulin pump. I'm not encouraging that, but what I am sayign is yes, if you cannot get tight enough control on the oral meds and exercise, then go to the insulin. Guest guest
Sharon, You should really ask your doc why he has you on both insulin and oral meds. Ask him about trying no oral meds. Often your sugars will go up after eating because you are not getting enough H with your meal. If you get up in the morning with a normal BS, then you would not be getting the " dawn effect " that so many diabetics get-which is a high early morning BS. What time is this high blood sugar happening after dinner? It might be that you needs less carbs at your evening meal. Re: Cy - low carb Thanks . Guest guest
Sharon, He might want you to try splitting the Lantis, but really humalog is the better answer. If you split the Lantis, you very well might end up with high blood sugars all over the place What is his objection to using Humalog? Re: Cy - low carb Hi , My sugars are doing better as a whole. Guest guest
I agree. Sharron, if you are up for it, go on humalog and we'll help you out and you'll have very strict / tight sugar control. However, it will require you to devote checking your sugar pre meal and 2 hours past eating a meal all the time. But, the nice thing about that is it gives you control and perhaps control is something that might be needed in your life right now... having that feeling of being in control of something rather than nothing. Guest guest
Thanks Harry. Sounds wonderful. My last a1c was 7.7 in March. It's time to have another one soon. It was 9.3 before that so even though it's not good it's at least coming down. Guest guest
I think you are right . My high blood sugar is about 3 hours after dinner. So, I'm beginning to think it's what I'm eating. Will watch those carbs. Guest guest
I'm not sure. Just said he wanted me to split the Lantus to try it. Guest guest
You could be right. I go to see my doctor again on the 14th. Will talk about this further. Guest guest
I know is right, and there is no doubt about it. I had to convince my doctor that I knew what I was talking about and that I had a lot of experts guiding me on my decision to use Humalog, which the doctor was hesitant to start me on. I know his worry about having me use Humalog, so I had to convince him that I was receiving very conservative guidance on how to use it, since this is an insulin you don't want to mess around with. A conservative statement in the use of Humalog is to say I will start on 1 unit of Humalog for 15 grams of carbs consumed, and I will do a glucose test two hours afterwards. This statement calmed my doctor's fears. I also assured him that I had glucose tablets on hand, too. Since I am insulin resistant, after starting on the aforementioned dose, I quickly had to raise my dosage level. After seveeral weeks, I was taking 1 unit of Humalog for every 2 grams of carbs consumed, which is my dose today. Guest guest
So, you split it and tried it. Lantus is a 24 hour insulin, and is highly recommended to take once per day in a sincle dose. If you have been doing fine on a split dose, then skipping the morning half dose and taking the whole dose at night should work just fine. At least it works just fine for the majority of folks, and chances are it will work just fine for you, too. Guest guest
You can get it down quicker and have greater stability by just cutting out all the oral medications and using two kinds of insulin; Lantus and Humalog. On oral medications I ran an A1C of 9.2 last August and started taking both kinds of insulin in either late August or the first of September. By December by just counting carbs and dosing with Lantus and Humalog my A1C went down to a 5.7. By March and still taking no oral meds it had dropped to 5.1. I am getting another A1C done tomorrow, and I think it will be near 5.1 or even lower. I will report my A1C results here when it comes in. Guest guest
Or sharron you could think of humalog to cover the carbs so you can eat them and not be high. Guest guest
If your doc is not open to you going on insulin as a type 2 ask what his/her objections are to it. I'd be curious to know. I have so many type 2 diabetic friends on lantus/humalog it isn't even funny. My one friend Liz is even on an insulin pump as a type 2 diabetic. Most type 2 diabetics I know use inslun, some oral meds, but really depends on if you can get your a1c to be 5.0 to 5.5 and only you can do that one Sharron smile. You could be able to get your a1c down by limiting carbs and seeig how many grams you can eat at a meal to keep your pre meal 80 and your 2 hour post meal 120 or less. BTW hang in there and keep us update on your progress. If you are up for it, limit yoru measl to no more than 45 grams of carbs and keep them 4 hours apart. Just read the labels on foods if you can or have someone sighted help you out. Guest guest
yes. but once you get the system down you won't be running low sugars. You will run 80 to 120 all the time. Guest guest
you take humalog before meals and the meals have to be 4 hours apart. The reason for this is humalog peeks in about 2 hours and is out of your body in 4 hours. If you want to snack in between meals, you eat low carb snacks like veggies, meats, cheeses, pickles, etc. Foods that will not raise your blood sugar. If you have more questions, please let us know.
