I had shingles years ago. Very painful! I caught them from my father. He had

them on his head and face, poor man, and had given him a hug on Thanksgiving

day. He had no sign of them left except a little scar here and there. But it

was like a week later and I had the beginnings of this rash on my back.

Within a day I was home with shingles. Gold bond powder helps alot. All you

can

do is wait it out. The thing I remember most is the nerve endings hurting for

months afterwards. I feel your pain.

I had shingles twice, about twenty years ago and then last year.

Definitely go for the anti-viral medication. 20 years ago, it took

months for the pain to subside; last year it took only weeks. (20

years ago, they didn't have the anti-viral.)

I wouldn't think there is a connection to CMT and shingles. I know a lot of

people who've had shingles, step-father being the one who gave them to me.

But out of all the people I know personally whose had shingles, I'm the only one

with CMT, well that's diagnosed that is. Shingles are just a form of adult

chicken pox. Very contagious, very painful for most, and the mid section seems

to be the most common area effected. My mother, step father and sister has

had them, but I'm the only CMTer in the family.

Happy new year all!

I have also had shingles. When I was pregnant with my first child. the rash

actually went in circle around my middle (very painful) and being pregnant I was

not able to take any medication. Funny thing is, my oldest child is the only

one of my three children, who has never had chicken pox (even though exposed on

more than one occasion). The Doctor mentioned she may have an immunity due to

my shingles while carrying her (apparently it is the same family of virus).

I find it interesting that so many people with CMT have experienced shingles (my

brother also had them). Any thoughts on a connection?

Hi Allyson,

If your immune system is not functioning well, then shingles could

definitely flare up. Viruses in the herpes family such as shingles

require a strong immune system in order to remain dormant, and if

you've got implants and have noticed that your immune system has been

malfunctioning ever since, then it's a good chance the implants are

contributing to the flare ups.

I hope all works out with the loan, it was such a relief to have mine

out.

This is correct...when our immune systems are overburdened and

cannot fight back, (when it is depressed), those viruses will come

out of dormancy and rear their ugly heads with symptoms of illness.

Many women with implants complain of getting sick with every bug and

flu that comes by. That is due to an immune system that can't

function well anymore due to the burden the implants have placed

upon our body.

Reducing the viral load is important to our healing. And that means

taking proactive steps to add supplements that will do the work of

killing off viruses, bacteria and fungus. Raw garlic is one great

supplement to help in that regard. Others include oil or oregano,

grapefruit seed extract, olive leaf extract, and various healing

mushrooms, to name a few.

I have been told that GABA is the health food store equivalent of the

pharmaceutical Neurontin. However, I have never had shingles so can't

vouch for efficacy.

Thanks for your thoughts on this. Here's an update. Once the rash

started turning into blisters it seemed pretty clear this is

shingles and I went to the ER Friday night, they agreed. I don't

know how this relates, if at all to the face symptoms. But I can't

imagine they have nothing to do with each other. I could have a

zoster reactivation in any area of the body, why the left side of my

head?

Anyway, for the acute problem, I was given Percocet and Valtrex.

Valtrex is an anti-viral. The Percocet makes me sick to my stomach

if I try to do anything. If I don't take it, the pain makes me sick

to my stomach. Guess I'll be losing some weight.

Before the vaccine, once you had chicken pox you built an immunity and didn't

get it again.

What did she do with them exactly? Were they cooked or raw?

I know that you addressed this to Skip or Cindi, but as a Chronic

shingles sufferer and health care worker, I can tell you that you need

to see a doctor IMMEDIATELY! Shingles in the eye area can cause severe

vision problems if not blindness if left untreated. You need medication

other than LDN. LDN does not cure shingles.

Hi Connie,

I just forwarded to you all of the chats that I have saved under the category of temporarily upping dosages to get out of exasperations. Please let me know if you do not receive them.

I am not certain of the duration or the amount that will work best for you. Many people have reported it works, but they have tried different dosages and different length of times. So, like everything else with LDN I guess it is a pretty individual thing. I hope that helps.

Conni,

Do yourself a favor and get on Valtrex for the shingles. Your doctor will have to prescribe it. I had shingles last fall in my head, face and eye and it took a while but the only thing that got rid of it was the Valtrex. Shingles can cause a real problem in your eye and head and you don't want that. Especially if you have MS like I do. I was lucky and got it on time.

Good Luck

Marie

Several years ago when I had a cold sore ( canker sore in USA I think)

I asked my local health food

shop if they had any the would help because Zovirax is useless. They

told me that 'the herpes virus can't exist in a Lysine rich

enviroment' Lysine is a naturally occuring amino acid - I got some

and have never been without Lysine just incase the virus strikes

again. It does but if I take Lysine as soon as I notice it starting

on my lip the sore never fully develops isn't paiful and goes away

much more quickly than without it.

Shingles is a herpes virus and I have thought for years that Lysine

would help it. No GP ever prescribes or advises it because there has

been no research about it..Does that sound familiar to anyone?

Today I googled it and found enough info to make me think that this

info could be posted so that people who wish to check it out may find

that it may be beneficial for shingles

I would certainly recommend it for cold sores so it might be worth a

look.

yesterday and came home equipped with all the valtrex and cortisone, and went

to the eye dr today to have my eye checked. Feeling better than yesterday….did

6 mg of ldn, and I think between that and the 60 mg of cortisone, could not

sleep even with a sleeping pill…….will nap today……thanks

again everyone……

Thank you..

I actually wentto the ER as the itching got so intense that it made me

very nervous- plus I have a stye in my eye. I had a herpes/cold sore

outbreak just a while ago- so it made me nervous.

The doctor there said I have an acute allergy to *something* and gave

me a big dose of benadryl- and I need to take anti-histamines through

the day. I am so relieved. They said if it doesn't go away or if my

throat hurts/hard to breathe than they need to put me on Steroids.

I think this is all some bizzare yeast problem.

I am so relieved my eye is ok.

I will wear gloves when I sleep again.

I had a rash appear shortly after Thanksgiving. I thought it was

shingls as it burned and itched and it was a postule that turned into

a lesion, which this is what shingles look like. I happened to be in

my cardiologist office as I am dealing with high blood pressure. the

PA that works for her also works for a GP dr., and looked at the rash

also. The following week I was back into the office and saw the PA.

She told me she thought I had Dermatitis Herpetiformis, as a patient

in the GP's office was diagnosed with this same rash and that is what

it was. I researched the topic on the internet and found that it is

an autoimmune reaction, and can be brought on by being sensitive to

wheat. I thought this was interesting as i am sensitive to wheat,

have RA, low thyroid--which are autoimmune problems. I had what was

diagnosed as shingles 20 years ago, but I bet it was not shingles at

all, but this DH stuff. Believe me, it will itch and burn and feel

like nettles. It can be on the scalp, the lower back, the ab area.

Shingles stay in one quandrant of the body. If this is what I had 20

years ago, I wasn't on the LDN at that time. I also read where

taking iodine can cause the DH to show itself. I had just been put

on iodine by my GP dr. to elevate my thyroid. I will say, some of the

stuff we get is wierd and unexplained. I have FM & MPS.

Has anyone dealt with The Shingles being on LDN?I have insane itching, small little rashes in different places on mybody and I am developing what appears to be a stye eye.Wouldn't my immune system not be so suseptible to such a virus? Is itthe chickenpox virus awakening in me? When I was onimmuno-suppressants I got Sackie virus which was an utter nightmare.Any experience much appreciated..Can this be part of Hering's Law of Cure in any way? Thanks,Jodi

If you suspect shingles go to the doc immediately (before 72 hours)

and they can give you a shot for them and that will take care of

it...otherwise it can be horribly painful for a long, long time.

Shingles can be deadly...not something to play around with.

My mom was in her 80's and developed shingles (I took her to doc as

soon as I saw a few little spots and she was having shooting pains in

her head. The doc looked at her, said " shingles " , gave her the shot

and she did fine...no problem at all. I know people who didn't pay the

proper attention and have had severe problem. -Biz

Yes shingles can be very painful, however there are herbs that

are antiviral and work specifically towards herpes virus of which shingles is

one. I’ve had a few clients have very fast recovery using external st

johnswort oil with a few other herbs (I’ll be happy to help, you can email me

off list bonniesherbals@...)
