Dear Marty:

We cannot judge each other.....You are a courageous husband.....It sounds

that what you did regarding keeping the genotype from your wife was done out

of love.....It wouldn't have worked for me because I get in there and find

out the facts myself, take a proactive role myself, and my husband, although

he tries to be supportive, has never looked up any information on this

disease....he prefers to hide his head in the sand......I'm the kind of

person who wants to know as much as I can.....Sometimes I forget that I'm not

the only person in my family with hep c......because I have it, all family

members have to deal with it .... " have " it, in a sense....sometimes I forget

that it's affecting everyone because I get so wrapped up in what's happening

to ME.......i believe everything happens for a reason and that the true peace

of God doesn't depend on our circumstances.....What a learning experience

this is! Take care, Diane

Hi Louise,

Marty's hearing was today. He may not know what the judge's

decision is for 2-4 months. Of course sometimes the judge will

tell on the same day. Depends on the judge I guess. Marty's

probably on his way back to California. Hopefully he checks

in with us tomorrow with the " scoop. "

Your friend, tricia

-- Marty

Has anyone heard how Marty's SSD hearing went? I thought it was

supposed to be yesterday?

Marty, so sorry to hear of your sad loss.

Sometimes you wonder whether these specialists really do know what they are

doing.

Not once have any of the doctors/specialists etc have mentioned about health

remedies or whatever, even what diet you should be on. Whether just fresh

fruit and vegies or even to avoid certain foods - just absolutely not one of

them have said anything. Makes you wonder if they are really helping you or

not doesn't it. It is a shame really.

I am sure we all on this list are thinking of you at this moment.

Marty, What is a EGD? When you were first dx in 1989 with AIH were you

put on meds? Did you have a liver biospy ? Are you on any kinds of meds

now? When my mom was flown by helicoptor to WV hospital many liver

doctors talked to us. They said she had to have 25% of her liver to live.

She didn't. But you do or otherwise you wouldn't be here. I guess when

they do those living donor transplants they must take 25% of the donor's

liver to transplant into the patient. I don't really know how it works

but seems to make sense. I do know that you have to be very careful with

infection. As soon as you feel you are coming down with something-you

must call your doctor and get on a antibodic. Please don't feel doomed.

You are not. You just need to take really good care of yourself.

Thanks for your reply. To answer some of your questions: yes, I have been on Prednisone since 1989 and Imuran since about 1992. The combination has kept my liver enzymes within normal limits, but in spite of that I have developed cirrhosis. There were no symptoms of the cirrhosis other than extreme fatigue and pale stools. It took me a while to convince my GI that something was wrong. Finally he ordered a CAT Scan and biopsy which showed the cirrhosis, enlarged liver and spleen. Yes, my liver is still functioning quite well compared to many people. I guess my doctor feels I should be evaluated now so that in the future if I need transplantation I will be a known person to the team. I don't know if EGD is the right term, but I am having an endoscopy to check for esophageal/stomach/intestinal varicosities and to band them if there are any that require it.

I am sure I will get over this "doomed" feeling, but right now things seem bleak. I need to focus on what I have and what I can do-which is a lot!!!

Love,

Marty

P.S. The tomatoes are fine! No tomatoe worms yet - I hate those things-did you know they make noise? I would love to hear about the trench planting of the tomatoes. I have only been somewhat successful with my tomatoes in the past. I am hoping for a better turn out this year. We just had 24 hours of rain which helped a lot!

Marty, Hope you are feeling well. Finished work early today so it's a

good time to try and catch up on some of the posts. I want to tell you

about the tomato plant my Dad grew. My Dad has always been into veggie

gardens. He loves doing it. The spring after my mom died he just didn't

want to do a garden at all! He said he will never garden again. Kept

talking to him about it but he just wouldn't. Then one night he mentioned

that he is thinking about planting one early girl for my mom. He had

promised her that they would do early girls the following spring. He

planted it. That plant grew like you wouldn't believe. Huge! It spread

out all over the place! He picked 789 tomatoes from it! That doesn't even

count the ones at the very end when the season was over. He was giving

them away to everybody! He was even mailing them to everyone he knew!

Also there was a double tomato that he picked near the end of the season

that looked like the tomatoes were kissing. He still has it in his

freezer. I have pictures he sent me of the plant as it grew so big and of

the kissing tomato. He was so happy. (I believe my mom had something to

do with it!) Since this, he now plants everything he use to. I call that

a miracle! Take care! -NH

Marty, I agree with Carole. It's been awhile since you had your bx. It

doesn't hurt to call and check it out. Tell them about the itching too.

When I think back, I was itching all over two years before I was dx with

AIH. Felt like I had little spiders crawling all over me! I told

different doctors when I would go and they would just look at me like I

was nuts. Probably wrote down in the file that I was! When we had to

drive to VA for my mom I was itching like crazy at the hospital. I

figured there was something wrong with the chairs I were sitting on. No

one else had that problem. I don't know if stress brings that out or not.

Only get it now once in a while. My palms and fingers drive me crazy with

the itching. I should look into the meds and use it for that. Sometimes

it keeps me from been able to sleep. Take care! -NH

Marty, I just looked up itching in the Palmer book . I just

remember that itching (Pruritus) had something to do with bile flow. It

says itching can occur in any liver disease complicated by

cholestasis-impairment or failure of bile flow. There's more and more in

chapter 15. Do you still have the book? I think you said you got it from

the library. How's that for memory???? -NH PS-Since you

said you were dx in 89 with AIH and you are now just getting itching you

should probably tell your doctor. I don't really understand the bile flow

stuff.

Marty, It sounds like you had good results with your cherry tomatoes. My

Dad had a good laugh about your dogs eating them off the vine! I don't

know if you can drop a net over them or not. People do that for

blueberries and raspberries to keep the birds from getting them. Sorry

about your other tomatoes plants. My Dad has had the same trouble with a

few of his. Did you use replace the dirt with new stuff when you put

your tomato plants in the pots? That sometimes helps. He told me

something about the tomato seeds could be infected or bad which can cause

the bottom leaves to dye. I don't understand all that stuff. He said

sometimes it happen and there isn't to much you can do. But, his

celebrity tomatoes are doing really good and his peppers. Cukes aren't

growing well for him this year. He said the cukes get to be about one

inch and then that's it. He's working on the situation. Are your walnut

trees black walnut? My Dad said you can't plant anything near black

walnut. I have a good recipe for black walnut cake. I guess you can use

regular walnuts too. My Mom made this for my Dad because he loves black

walnuts. I never knew there black walnuts?? Walnuts are walnuts to me.

I can send you this recipe, but, you can't forget the butter on this

one!!!(LOL) Let me know. Can't remember if I asked you this before.

What's the mg on the ambien that you take? Are you feeling better?

I take Ambien 5 mg. at bed time and I repeat the dose if I can't sleep or if I want to make sure I am going to sleep. That usually does the trick. I don't even hear my husband snoring any more.

When I put the tomatoes in pots I used half new soil and half what they were already in. I am thinking it would have been a good idea to completely change the soil. All that potting was a really hard job though and I don't have enough energy to do anything else if this fails.

We never use our black walnuts because they are too hard to get out of their shells. The squirrels know how to do it!

I am having a lot of pain under my ribs on the right side, rotating around to the back. It hurts when I take a deep breath. This has been going on for 3 weeks. I will call the doctor on Monday if it persists.

Meanwhile I have been getting by with Darvocet that my mother had left over. Does anyone know if Darvocet is harmful to the liver?

Have a great week end everyone.

Love,

Marty

Marty,

Darvocet has acetamenaphin (tylenol) in it. Tylenol is okay occasionally in small doses, but should not be taken on a regular basis by anyone with liver disease. I was taking Lortab, which has tylenol and hydrocodone, when I was diagnosed with AIH in January. My pain mgmt doc switched me to oxycodone immediately. There are not a lot of oral pain meds that do not have tylenol. According to my pharmacist, the main pain meds without tylenol are oxycodone and morphine.

Marty, It sounds to me like that radiating pain could be your pancreas.

I had lots of trouble with my pancreas when I was real sick. Doctors

don't seem to know what causes it. Blood work is tricky. Sometimes they

come out normal and other times it comes out high, but, never ignore that

pain. Make sure you contact your doctor today! It's best to have both

test- Amylase and Lipase. Lipase can be high when amylase is normal.

They don't always check the lipase. As for black walnuts - My Dad uses

a square piece of wood and a hammer. He just smacks the walnut once with

the hammer to open it. He said you can use a vise too. It is hard to

believe squirrels can open them! (Maybe you should watch them and find

out their secret) My Dad says the Health food stores sell the walnuts

(already cracked) by the pound. $8.00 a lb!! A way to make some extra

cash. Or bake some black walnut cakes to sell to restaurants. Do you

collect all the nuts and keep them for year round? In this book I have

it says: Black walnuts aids in digestion and promotes healing of mouth

or throat sores. Cleanses the body of some types of parasites. Good for

bruising, fungal infection, herpes, poison ivy, and warts. When boiled,

the hulls produce a dye that is used to dye wool. Take Care!
