Hi Wynn... I think the problem is usually the food intake. You are already doing

more than enough. I downloaded a program on my i-phone and have been very

diligent about recording everything that I put in my mouth (that includes 'a

taste' of this and 'a bite' of that. It is amazing how quickly the calories add

up. I can easily eat my whole days allowance by lunch (that's before lunch :-)

if I am not careful.

Also, the older we get the fewer calories we need. I need about 1,300 before

exercise. If I eat clean protein, fruits and veggies and maybe a slice or two of

bread and my oatmeal and milk for breakfast then I can pretty much stay within

my goal but if i add sweets or bites of food or pasta or lots of bread then it

is difficult to stay within a reasonable range.

My trainer had told me it's 80-85% food...The rest is exercise. He had said even

light exercise is great but if I really wanted to get rid of the fat, in the end

it was the food I had to be careful with and I have found he is completely

right.

Hope this helps a bit!

Hello Everyone,

I am going to get back on track! I have walked for the last 2 days. Today,

for an hour while listening to the podcasts. I go back to work tomorrow to

my stressful job. I am trying to keep positive thoughts so that I don't

stress eat. Hope you all have a good Monday.

Morning, E!

I think you are absolutely right about the food intake and I have been

avoiding addressing that for some time. I appreciate you taking the time to

reply. I feel like I have cut down enough that the weight should just fall

off, but that's not happening, so I guess it's time to get a little more

serious. I have been on so many diets and yo yo'd up & down, I had vowed

never to diet again. I am avoiding a food diary like the plague, but maybe

that's where I need to start.

I too had a good day yesterday. Had a really smart well-proportioned

breakfast, even tho we ate out. Did a clutter cut on my desk which made me

feel better and lighter! Try it! And did a small run on the treadmill, 5.4

km. Knees were really hurting so I decided that was enough and it was.

Hope everyone has a great Sunday. Thanks for being here for me!

Hi!

I had a friend visiting over the weekend, so I was not online. Thanks to

everyone for their posts. It is great to have this forum!

My friend who was visiting has an incredible amount of innate athletic ability.

She plays ice hockey, runs, lifts weights and so on. And she is a much better

swimmer than I am. I took swimming lessons with her and was so much slower, it

wasn't funny. I guess that's where my limiting beliefs come from. The nice

thing, though, is and was that she sees and accepts me as a fellow athlete. I

might be heavy and slower than she is, but definitely an athlete.

Also, even as a child, my friends were usually slim. So, I was the fat,

non-athletic kid in the bunch. I guess it's what you compare yourself to.

Had a good weekend, though, lots of walking around, hiking, being active. Now I

will work on this limiting belief and deeply love and accept myself, even though

I won't break any records swimming...

Hope everyone is having a good start into the week!

Wynn...... I am going to be 37 in May and I have premature rheumatoid

Arthritis. I know about pain and I found this out when I went to get a

consultation on having my knee scoped about three years ago and then last year I

fell into my floor . Yes you read that right I stepped on vent and got my knee

caught under the floor and I was told no running for six months. So I am just

baby stepping it back into that.

I did go swimming . I wore a TShirt over my black suit and you know what I felt

fine about my body ( Even my knobby knees and my belly that looks five/ six

months along) and even went off the diving board a half a dozen times ( which I

had to walk passed all the people who were not swimming to do) I have been told

for years I have low self esteem and poor body image and you know we are

what you say and people will say things so My comeback......  is so what at

least I am out here swimming and living my life.

I am sorry you did not get to golf and the weather is dreary don't throw in the

towel just dry it off and try not to be so hard on yourself.

Benefits from swimming....... spending quality time with my youngest. Helping my

assitant get out and smile. Helping her child experience something new ( he is a

don't sing, don't smile, don't splash, afraid of his own shadow kind of

kid) and last but not least just doing it. Hugs Connie

It is the TRYING that counts! and you have so many other things that you are

awesome at! Kinda reminds me of my Guitar ( if I can't be perfect and awesome

then I just won't do it) but I know practice makes all the

difference. Sounds like you had a good weekend I am happy for you. You seem

athletic to me!

Constance YOU ARE AMAZING! Way to go girl. Another good deed for today. You made

me smile...made me feel happy. :-)

My best friend has premature rheumatoid arthritis and I constantly experience

first hand the amount of pain that someone with this disease can have. I truly

feel for you sweetie.

You did good going swimming! It sounds like the whole day was a positive one and

that you focused so much on helping others that you didn't have much time to

focus on yourself.

And you know what? Probably few people even noticed your size. Your fun loving

personality is probably what came through in the end and you created a very nice

memory for yourself and others around you.

You sound happy lately Constance. And you know...it's catchy.

Another swimmer! So glad to read this, Constance! I know the self-consciousness

of squeezing myself into a Speedo and doing my thing. But I found that a good

way to overcome this apprehension of what other people are going to think: I

just think that they will be supportive and go " good for her, she is getting out

there and doing exercise...You go girl " kind of thing. They might do that, they

might be negative, I'll never find out anyway, so let's be positive and

supporting!

I was amazed to read about your painting and very touched that you shared that

with us. Thank you, you are a complex, multi-faceted jewel of a human being!

Got stuck in the lab last night so I didn't get home before 9:30 PM, way too

late to go swimming. So I went this morning. Felt better about it and am curious

how I will do tomorrow night at swim practice.

Take care everybody and thanks for all your support!

I am mostly happy....... ( Can't appreciate Happy and Joy if you don't know Sad

I don't have anyone else to share with. That is why I said I hope you all are

not upset by it. I have even encounters my husband letting me know that he does

not care and wished not to deal with me and my emotions . So in real life I am

very gaurded even around my family. Last time I was at my dads and Margo ( his

new wife's) cabin/ I swam to the island and laid in the sand. I was gone two

hours and they were freaking out. I am a slow swimmer but I do love to swim. I

spent a lot of time playing dive and get the ring with te ( almost 13) and

helping ( just 4 ) not be afriad of the water. So it was a social swim.

Our public pool is only open to public from 1 pm to 3pm on Saturday. But it is

almost warm enough for lake swimming here! In fact it is on my list of Mother's

Day things to do.

Morning, Constance;

I noticed your post about refusing to by new clothes. This is me too. In my

head I know that the best thing I could do for myself is to go buy one

outfit that fits and looks good. But I drown in all the negatives - don't

waste the money, you won't look good anyway, you don't deserve it, no one

cares how you look, etc. etc. etc. So, I am going to work on this this week.

I have a gift certificate from Christmas which I am going to use. My biggest

hurdle is to not buy the cheapest thing I can find and to, big breath,

actually try it on in the store to make sure it fits and looks good. Wish me

luck. I am wishing you the opportunity to do the same thing for yourself.

Buy yourself something really pretty. You deserve it!

How are you addressing your limiting beliefs? Would it help to have some outside

input? Starting from the fact that these are really, really common beliefs among

anyone with weight issues.... So these beliefs look really familiar to me....

1. Who is worthy of love? You are obviously so caring. And full of love for

others. You've already had an impact on us. (And a lot of us live half a globe

away. Wow. World-wide impact...) If you're not worthy, who is??

2. I'm often tired just reading how much you do! Are you trying to do too much?

Maybe if you don't get through your whole list, it's because there are too many

things on the list, not because you're lazy?

I do deserve a lot things......... joy, happiness, peace, content, and

tenderness.

How am I addressing the I need to get the mountain of things to be done. Done! (

It was beyond wonderful when everyone in my home worked on yard work together

the other night.)

I think it can be called superhero womenhoodness.

Where did it start? : what keeps it going?: recognizing it when it pops

up: making a small improvement in this area each day.(continuous improvement )

I am very aware that my " I am Lazy " issue is right there with the " I am not

worthy " issue. They are like two weeds growing and twisted together. They have

no place in me and  I will dislodge them sooner or later. ( see I am showing

myself LOVE because I believe in myself)

I did buy myself a new dressy shirt ( it was itchy but everyone said I looked

great) I think I am gonna tweak it a bit. I also tried to help my SIL who is

having a really hard time with her son ( he is a couple months younger than my

youngest) . SIL has the I HAVE TO BE PERFECT IN ALL WAYS issue. The same one

my husband has....... but his seems so much milder than hers.

Hugs from Constance in Mich.

(((Constance) ))

How are you addressing your limiting beliefs? Would it help to have some outside

input? Starting from the fact that these are really, really common beliefs among

anyone with weight issues.... So these beliefs look really familiar to me....

1. Who is worthy of love? You are obviously so caring. And full of love for

others. You've already had an impact on us. (And a lot of us live half a globe

away. Wow. World-wide impact...) If you're not worthy, who is??

We are currently having a debate within our team about exercise limits with low-calorie intake. For those patients that are taking in less than 1000 calories per day are any of you suggesting lower amounts of aerobic exercise? We have seen some higher levels of muscle loss (via BIA) with those that are still early post-bypass and doing things like running 30 minutes or more. One team member says don’t worry about it, help them lose as much as possible in the first year and rebuild muscle thereafter while promoting whatever movement they enjoy and the other says we should focus on minimizing muscle loss even if that means telling them to reduce aerobic activity levels. Wondering what you all tell patients, what your personal opinion is and would LOVE any ideas on related research. Thanks in advance.

Hi ,I would be cautious in interpreting the BIA results. Keep in mind that

hydration influences the values as does whether or not the subject has recently exercised. Staying adequately hydrated can be a challenge for many in the early post-op period even without vigorous physical activity. I would not discourage activity as the benefit to maintaining and even building LBM while losing fat mass is well

established. In those who are up for the challenge, I encourage short-burst, higher-intensity interval training vs. sustained, low level, longer duration activity. There is a lot of research out there to support the benefits. Continue to ensure they're consuming adequate protein and fluids to support their activity as well. From: Laschkwitsch, :LPH Weight Management Institute <KLaschke@...>Subject: exercise Date: Monday, March 7, 2011, 6:01 PM
