Guest guest
Hi Thia, Yes, that's the one. There are tiny holes around the edge (outer) of the bottom. I think they drain great and easily. Once the sprouts have some roots and height, I even turn them upside down to drain more. Then when you're greening them up, just sit them on their drain tray.....they look so pretty! I paid about $28 for mine in a health food store. Guest guest
It's a bit hard for me to tell in the pic...does *each* level have it's own drain tray, or is it only one for all three to stack upon? Guest guest
Good Morning Thia, Each sprouting tray has it's own drain tray, and they just stack. That's one reason I love this sprouting system so much....it's so compact.....also easy to drain and easy to green up your sprouts. Guest guest
Thanks so much! I just might have to give this a go. I really like the system I have right now, using the jar a couple days, then moving into the OXO. Greens up well, hulls rinse off easily. BUT, then when I want to rinse my salad greens the OXO is busy filled with sprouts! So, I am faced with buy another OXO, or try this. Guest guest
Thia, go to a 99 cent store or Goodwill type store and pick up a salad spinner that isn't any good for spinning. Use that for sprouting and that will free up your OXO. ew Re: Sherry re: round green sprouter Date: Sat, 3 Oct 2009 13:43:56 -0400 Thanks so much! I just might have to give this a go. Guest guest
Hi everyone. Just wanted to say that I just went on ebay and BOUGHT ANOTHER 3 TRAY GREEN ROUND SPROUTER. I've been having SUCH GREAT RESULTS with my other 3 tray thing that I said " why on earth am I rinsing and draining using jars when I can simply get another 3 tray thing?? " So I'll grow my Fenugreek in my mason jars (I tried sprouting these in trays and hemp bags (YUCK). Jars are perfectly fine for fenugreek, (as you can see if you saw my Fenugreek video on youtube). Those I grew in my mason jars. Big, fluffy green sprouts. But for my radish, clover, broccoli and alfalfa, well, I LOVE the 3 tray round green things. I harvested a bumber crop last night. I held them over a big bowl of water to get many of the hulls out. I don't have a hose that I can use outside or I would do the pressure water thing, so I do the next best thing. I swished them upside down in the bowl, then (because I don't like the ends), I snip snip the bottoms off and they all fall into a clear bowl of water. I swish swish, and get most of the hulls off, I then do the salad spinner thing, THEN I PUT THEM ON A CLEAN WHITE DRY TOWEL so they can really dry. Then I LOCK & LOCK them. Works for me. I've GOT LOTS OF SPROUTS NOW. Oh, I saved $5.00 by getting the 3 tray system on ebay. Hope all are well. Melody
Guest guest
Melody, I knew you would love the 3 tray sprouter! Isn't it just so much easier than the jars? By the way, do you eat " just sprout " salads......and if so, what type of dressing do you use? I usually use a dressing that I make with cranberries, apple juice, vinegar, etc. for my salads, but I don't believe I would like it that much on just sprouts. Guest guest
Hi Sherry: I AM IN SPROUT HEAVEN. Today was the funniest. My landlord knocked on my door needing some computer help. I dragged her into my kitchen saying " you must see what I grow " . Her eyes got all big and she said " Oh my goodness, my sister and I were wondering what your sprouts looked like and we wanted to come in and see " . (I had shown them my videos on their computer, but I moved everything since that video and now I have a wall in my kitchen, nice and neat with all my bowls and jars and trays on my sprout racks) She was quite amazed. I said " if you think this is amazing, get a load of what's in my freezer " . The other day I made A HUGE BATCH OF TOMATO CABBAGE SOUP and I froze 19 portions of it (my husband loves this every day). She saw all the little bowls and she laughed and said 'my, you stack everything don't you? " Then I walked her through the sprouting process. While she was in my freezer I showed her all my sprouts. Then I showed her how I soak them. Then I showed her my jars and trays. Then I GAVE HER A ZIP LOCK BAG FULL OF SPROUTS. She laughed her head off. Then I went over to her place next door to me, and I helped her on her computer. Wait until I get this new 3 tray unit. I'll just put them on top of the other and I'LL HAVE 6 ROUND GREEN TRAYS growing LOTS OF LOVELY SPROUTS. I do believe when I sprout in a tray and then I cut off the bottom (before I do the swish swish), well the sprouts look much different than when I do the jar thing. Nothing wrong with the jar thing but when I do the round green tray, well THE SPROUTS ARE GREENER. Oh, I have a question. IS THERE A LIMIT TO HOW LONG ONE CAN GROW SPROUTS IN THE SPROUT TRAY? I've been sprouting as long as 6 days and they PLUMP UP BEAUTIFULLY. I wonder what would happen if I sprouted them longer. Can I do this? Anyone ever do this? Guest guest
Sherry, I love " just sprouts " salad. I make a delicious cucumber tahini dressing. Half a cucumber (with peel), 2tbsp tahini, 1tsp of soy sauce (or salt), a few cherry tomatoes, green onions (the white part), and 1tsp of sesame oil. Blend till smooth. You can also add garlic, cilantro, or onions for extra flavor. Jennie On Mon, Oct 5, 2009 at 2:36 AM, Sherry Skapik <sherryskapik@...>wrote: > > > Melody, > I knew you would love the 3 tray sprouter! Guest guest
Hi. I forgot to add what dressing I put on my sprout salad. After adding cut up sun dried tomatoes, some sliced celery, sliced black and green olives (the ones that are stuffed with pimentos) various sprouts, some shredded carrots, and ANYTHING ELSE ONE DESIRES TO PUT IN A SALAD, I toss in some sunflower seeds....then I'm ready for the dressing, and it's simple as pie. I take some extra virgin olive oil, some fresh ground pepper, a splash of lemon juice, salt and pepper to taste (some people use sea salt), I use the light salt. I then shake some dried basil and just a tinge of garlic powder (because garlic gives me gas and I DON'T LIKE GAS). This might sound like a lot of work, but when you do it every single day, you can do this in your sleep. Well, the colors of this salad ....well, make one and judge for yourself. It's to die for!!! Glorious colors, all that beta carotene, all those vitamins and minerals in the sprouts, all the fiber. ALL GOOD STUFF!!! And the most tasty thing I have ever eaten. Do you know that at 9 p.m. at night, when I get a munchy feeling, I just make a smaller version of that salad. I don't need any cookies, or snacks or anything. Just my sprouts. Guest guest
Melody, Thanks so much for your salad info! I had never even thought of shredded carrots - I bet the texture of them with the sprouts is really good. That's why I never have a plain sprout salad.... the texture of only sprouts didn't appeal to me. I will definitely try it your way. I bet raisins or craisins would be good too, with the carrots and sunflower seeds. If you have a Whole Foods or Henrys nearby, you can get lots of good things in the bulk aisle to add to your salads. ew Re: Sherry re: round green sprouter > > > > > > Hi everyone. > > > > Just wanted to say that I just went on ebay and BOUGHT ANOTHER 3 TRAY GREEN > > ROUND SPROUTER. > > > > I've been having SUCH GREAT RESULTS with my other 3 tray thing that I said > > " why on earth am I rinsing and draining using jars when I can simply get > > another 3 tray thing?? Guest guest
Melody, Okay, I've just to ask what is in your cabbage/tomato soup. I make soups all the time....I just love them. I have a vegetarian soup cookbook, and a Culinary Institute cookbook and they have some great recipes. You are going to convert your whole neighborhood to a healthier lifestyle! I've never seen anyone as enthusiastic as you. I think it's just great Melody.....there is an expression the French have, and I can't think how to spell it, but it essentially means " joy for life " or " zest for life " . That's you to a tee! As for sprouting them longer than 6 or 7 days, I haven't tried to. Maybe you could just try one tray, and see what happens? Guest guest
Hey Ernest, Yes, I love pumpkin seeds. I do shop at Whole Foods for bulk.....so much more reasonable. I need to go there soon for buckwheat flour, couldn't find it anywhere else close by. Going to make some crepes with it. Guest guest
Sesame seeds, and poppy seeds go well, too. And don't forget fruits! Orange wedges, pineapple chunks, or apple slices...even strawberries... go really well on salads! Orange, poppy, & sesame is a great combo. As is apple & walnut. :~) Thia On Mon, Oct 5, 2009 at 8:46 PM, Ernest Willingham <99tomatoes@...>wrote: > > > Don't forget pine nuts, pumpkin seeds, slivered almonds. Guest guest
PS. Try an Asian flavored dressing on the orange poppy sesame, and a balsamic based dressing on the apple walnut. Guest guest
Sherry: I do try, I really do. I try to see the glass as half full instead of half empty. I've been though it all, the depression, the self medicating with food, etc. Got me nowhere. So now I sprout. Before I give you my tomato cabbage soup recipe I must tell you what happened earlier today. There are two young people who live upstairs from me. The guy (he's about 30), I met him in front of my door and I said " do you like Oatmeal cookies " ? And he said " who doesn't like oatmeal cookies? " I then said " I have a batch of oatmeal, peanut butter, butterscotch cookies " . I dragged him in my house (he'd never been in before) and I said " before the cookies, I have to show you how I grow my food " He goes; 'you grow your food?? " And there in my kitchen, sitting neatly on my sprout rack were my 10 mason jars soaking my broccoli and radish seed mixture. He walks over and stares and says " oh my god, you are soaking the seeds? " and I said " yup, for 7 hours " Then I walked him through what I do. I showed him my seeds that I store in my freezer (all organic). I then showed him my sprouting trays and my mason jars. Then I turned to him and said " Want to see how they are greening up?? " I took him into the living room where they were basking in the sun filling up with clorophyl. I had 12 jars filled with sprouts (and I do mean bursting). He just stared and said " Oh my god " . I then took some of my harvested sprouts and put them in a dish and said " here's you salad for tonight " . He just stared at them. Then I handed him some of my homemade oatmeal peanut butter and butterscotch cookies. He went upstairs a very happy guy. I love to feed people. I think I'm feeding my neighborhood bit by bit. The other day it was my landlord, today it was the guy upstairs. Okay, here's my soup recipe I MAKE LOTS, so you have to down size the recipe. I used 5 (28 oz each) of crushed tomatoes. First (in my BIG pot)I saute a lot of onions and celery in some diet margarine. Then I pour in the 5 cans of crushed tomatoes. To this I add about 4 large carrots (all slivered up). I add 16 cups of water (you can also add some chicken broth, but I didn't do that this time). I take a HUMUNGOUS cabbage and chop chop. I put it into the pot (it's a huge pot). I make sure everything is nicely mixed up in the pot. My gas range is on low. You can add any kind of veggies you like to this dish. I don't add sugar, I add some splenda. Alan LOVES sweet stuff. so I simmered it for almost 3 hours. I made 19 portions. They are in my freezer. If you don't have a cabbage loving man in your life, I suggest you start with two cans of crushed tomatoes and start from there. lol Melody
Guest guest
Try shredding some carrots and then take a red and yellow bell pepper and dice it up. I put this on Alan's salads. You never saw such colors in all your life. And it's all raw and healthy. And you mention craisins. OH MY GOD, YOU'LL GO TO HEAVEN. I can't eat them because of the carb content but let me tell you how I found out about craisins. I was at my niece's house for a birthday party about a year ago. She had made this divine salad. Since I couldn't eat anything else that she served (we don't eat meat), and there was PLENTY OF MEAT AT THIS PARTY, lol, I just enjoyed the salad. So I was looking at the salad and saw these little things and I ate them and I was in heaven. I ran over to my niece and said " what on earth are these little things? and she laughed and said " oh, craisins " I went to the store the very next day but when I saw how many carbs and how much sugar, well now I know why they tasted so good in that salad. Oh my goodness, that was indeed the best salad. Oh but I discovered something to add to my sprout salad today. I was at a friend's house this afternoon. She said to me " Melody, I know you love your sprout salad, do you ever but onion croutons on them? " I said 'what on earth are onion croutons, I mean, I use croutons all the time, but what are onion croutons " .? She said " I keep them in my freezer " . I said 'you keep CROUPTONS in your freezer? She then took me in her kitchen, and said " I just took these out of the freezer earlier. see, they are onion croutons. " THEY WEREN'T ONION CROUTONS, they were Lightly salted fried onions. Holy Cow, I tasted them and said " oh my goodness " . I then went home, sliced up an onion, dipped the slices in egg beaters and then some bread crumbs and then fried and drained them so most of the oil was gone. Made my own homemade onion rings. I then made my sprout salad and crumbled up the onion rings in the salad. YOU MUST TRY THIS. Absolutely divine. lol Melody > > > > > > > > > > > Melody, > > > I knew you would love the 3 tray sprouter! Guest guest
This is where a dehydrator comes in handy. Crumble dehydraded onions on your salads. I grow more onions than I can eat or give away. Run the dehydrator for a couple of days and can up the dried product. Use it every chance I get. ew Re: Sherry re: round green sprouter > > > > > > > > > Hi everyone. > > > > > > Just wanted to say that I just went on ebay and BOUGHT ANOTHER 3 TRAY GREEN > > > ROUND SPROUTER. > > > > > > I've been having SUCH GREAT RESULTS with my other 3 tray thing that I said > > > " why on earth am I rinsing and draining using jars when I can simply get > > > another 3 tray thing?? Guest guest
Melody, The onions do sound really yummy! Thanks for all your salad ideas. I don't eat much meat either, but I haven't given it up totally. No beef for me, but chicken and fish once in a while. One problem with being totally veggie is I don't like eggs. I can eat food with eggs cooked in it, but that's about it. I think growing up on a farm, eating eggs every day, and taking care of the chickens just turned me off of eggs. Guest guest
Melody, How the heck do you make cookies and not eat any? I have to say sweets are my downfall, and I'm a very good baker.....not a good combo. I really wish I could be disciplined to not eat any sugar. I know how bad it is for our health, and still I love desserts. I'm a very healthy eater otherwise. Did you just go cold turkey? Thanks so much for the cabbage soup recipe. Guest guest
Thia, Yes, let me know how it goes with the coconut flour (which I've never heard of). By the way, I make popcorn all the time with the coconut oil, thanks to you. I just love! I've been getting the series on DVD " Rescue Me " from the library (the best show!), and about every 3 nights I'll make my popcorn and watch an episode. Yes, I've made crepes with buckwheat flour before, but it also has regular unbleached flour as well. (And they're very good). Maybe I'll try it with straight buckwheat flour next. Thanks for all the salad ideas.
