Guest guest
Anne, welcome aboard. Wise choice with the EasySprout, but as soon as you taste your own sprouts, one won't be enough. Especially when its four or five days to maturity. Experiment with wide mouth quart jars with a piece of old nylon stocking and a rubber band for a cover. You'll thank me later. ew Newbie sticking her head up Date: Mon, 1 Jun 2009 17:02:41 -0400 Hey, folks. I'm really, really new to the world of sprouting. I love the few varieties of sprouts I've tried and have eaten them whenever I can find any that are reasonably fresh at the store (not all that often), but it just never occurred to me to sprout them myself, both so I could have a steady supply of nice fresh sprouts, and so I could try other kinds.<G> Which is a laugh because I adore both cooking and gardening. I love to grow fresh herbs, and to date my favorite way to eat sprouts is just to smear a flax wrap with plenty of my fresh herbed cream cheese, put a big handful of sprouts in it, wrap it up and eat that sucker! Well, okay, I also love sprouts tossed with just a teeny bit of apple cider vinegar and olive oil, and use them as a nest for a piece of herb-marinated grilled salmon. Anyway, as of today, I'm the proud owner of one EasySprout and some seeds that came with it and am rarin' to go. I realize I'm hardly going to flood my kitchen with sprouts with my one little sprouter, but I don't want to start out beyond my abilities. I'll grow.<G> My biggest challenge is going to be keeping my four cats from " investigating " my sprouts and knocking them over. So I'll be looking for tips and suggestions and recipes. Be patient, I'm just a toddler here!<G> Anne Home grown tomatoes: the ultimate taste of summer -- Be Yourself @ mail.com! Guest guest
I started sprouting because I'm cheap! When fresh mung bean sprouts started coming in bags instead of loose and a 1/2# bag cost the same as a pound of seeds in the Asian food section, I became a sprouter. ew Re: Newbie sticking her head up Date: Mon, 1 Jun 2009 18:34:29 -0400 Hello, Anne! Guest guest
Ernest; I'm with you on that. When I see people saying that they can't afford to eat fresh organic food and that it's cheaper to grab a meal at Macs, I'm thinking, " you people need to learn two things, math and sprouting. " Sprouting, unfortunately, does not get any positive exposure in the press. Lee On Jun 1, 2009, at 6:53 PM, Ernest Willingham wrote: > I started sprouting because I'm cheap! Guest guest
Lee, are you old enough to remember an old breakfast cereal commercial where that was a line, " I'm not going to eat it, its good for you " ? Most people are that way. I got a friend hooked up with CSA farm where I volunteer. She lasted one season, " I don't know what all that stuff is, or what to do with it " . My answer, of course, is use it to quit killing yourself with the Western Diet. ew Re: Newbie sticking her head up Date: Mon, 1 Jun 2009 19:45:54 -0400 Ernest; I'm with you on that. Guest guest
I usually find some pretty healthy looking organic Daikon Radish sprouts at Whole Foods, and I really love the taste of them. If you have a Whole Foods nearby, you might want to check them out. I do sprout other things, but don't want too many sprouters going at once. I have a small kitchen. Guest guest
Nearest Whole Foods to me is 25miles on an LA freeway. I go once a month to get items that I can't get anywhere else. I have my own garden and grow lots of sprouts, so I am luckier than most. Room for the garden was on the list of what we we looking for when we bought this house 45 years ago. ew Re: Newbie sticking her head up Date: Tue, 2 Jun 2009 17:29:11 -0400 > I usually find some pretty healthy looking organic Daikon Radish sprouts > at Whole Foods, and I really love the taste of them. Apparently the nearest Whole Foods to me is 165 miles which is farther than I've ever ridden my bicycle on one trip before. :-) Maybe some day they'll build one here in town (or maybe when I graduate and find a university to hire me it will be in a town with a Whole Foods.) We did just get a Costco last year but my husband hasn't given the okay to join yet. He wants to see what's in there before joining and they won't let you in without a membership so it's kind of a catch-22 until such time as one of our friends joins. I've been told I can save a lot on produce at Costco, though. Don't know if they have sprouts. But I eat something like a half a case of bananas per week and can always freeze what I can't eat right away. Frozen bananas make awesome " ice cream. Guest guest
Indeed they do! I love frozen 'naners! I've even added in sliced strawberries, for ice cream. yum. :~) As for Costco, try looking online: www.costco.com They do offer more online than in the stores, but you would at least have access to all of it with a membership. I did notice a link called " in the warehouse " that might be helpful- not sure- I didn't check into much over on the site. :~) Thia On Tue, Jun 2, 2009 at 6:03 PM, Sparrow R <sparrowrose@...>wrote: > ... > ...Costco ....
