Welcome Sandee B.

Glad you've joined . Its such a relief to have found this e-group

that we can all relate . I can imagine what you've been going

through . I'm pretty sure you'll be able to share some information of

what you've been through with your daughter of 23 yrs. old . The

Disability Solutions has been the excellent information to have

opened the doors for my son 12 . You will feel at home here .

Hope you find answers for your daughter , too . No matter what age

our children are, we Love them and we would like to see them happy

growing up . So we will try to find answers to help each other . Many

Blessings .

Irma , 12 , DS/ASD .

hi sande, nice to meet someone towards the middle of the US besides me,

we're in iowa, I could look up in my exceptional parent magazine, they sent

out a thick one awhile back with all the facilities of each states and the

particualar area in which they work in. I know that university of iowa

hospital is in there for most things in iowa and this is where weve been

taking nathan for years. He is now 9yrs with ds, pdd,(autism), add/hd, ocd.

I will need the weekend to dig it out again. You can also do internet

search, just put something like special needs physicians in kansas or

something to that affect and it shoul gived you at least a couple in the

state of kansas. get creative during your search, and as long as you put in

kansas it should stick to your state. shawna.

Hi ! I'm mom to 2 year olds Arielle (Are-ee-el-a) & Annemieke

(On-a-meek-a)(ds).

We didn't know Annemieke was ds until she was born. It was quite a shock,

but she is doing very well both with her health and her development. These

are my first children, I can't imagine having twins with 3 other kids in the

house. Though I see you have 2 teenagers, they should be a big help.

If you can we love to see pictures. I'm glad you found the group !! What

part of the country (or world) are you in ??

Look forward to hearing from you,

Hi. I'm new to this group. Last year on Mother's Day (5/14/00), I gave

birth to twins, Hannah and , and was diagnosed with Down

Syndrome. I have 3 older children, Beth-14, -13 and Kimber-7. We

are a Christian family and we are very proud to have in our

family. We have a very supportive church family also, but I would

really enjoy talking to others that truly know what we go through

everyday. I look forward to getting to know all of you in the future.

Hi ,

I have four children. Quinn is 5, Sara and Maggie are 2, and Teddy is 9

months. Maggie has Down syndrome and is doing very well. She has no health

problems and is just doing so well-we couldn't ask for better.

Welcome to the group. You should be able to find answers to any questions

or find people who have gone or are going through the same things as you and

your family.

Looking forward to hearing about your clan.

Welcome to the group. Our boys are now 18 months old, born February 2000. Davey has DS. We found out before he was born during a routine twin ultrasound. We also have two older girls Amy 13, and Kelsey 11. We are very blessed to have Davey in our family. He is very healthy and quite an entertaining little guy. He is now up to three signs, "water", "horse", and "airplane". Who would guess that those would be his first. Looking forward to hearing more from your family. This is a great group. new to group Hi. Janice: The frustration regarding the delays in academics is a hard on

these kids with this issue. My son almost lost his mind last year

in Grade K when they wouldn't stop pushing the ABC's he has still not gotten

yet. After I took him to a psychologist for an evaluation because everytime

you mentioned the ABC'S he would run away........ he confirmed this had

a negitive impact on him emotionally all th epushing and him hard working

and it still not clicking. He recieved therapy for anxiety disorder relating

to school performance........I loved the psy. analogy.....................he

said quote "If I told you to put your head in a bucket of water and breath

and you knew you couldn't, wouldn't you become anxious?"..This is not avoidance

as we see it but self preservation!!!!!..great point he had......In therapy

he learned to relax and say I am "frustrated"....thank God he is in a special

ed program this year with a wonderful teacher, who delayed his first spelling

test on letter A because she said he was so nervous about it. She purposely

tested him on material he knew to build his esteem!!!!!!

Janice,

Boy I miss the north (and the military) when it comes to intervention and such a great team!! You are well on your way! I see Michigan well represented when I attend conferences throughout the US. I miss our OT and speech days. I am working on it again!

ph has gone and still goes through 'the sillies' and a few other 'non-focusing' behaviors too. I do believe some of it comes with maturity; however, he is 12, and we still have those times. If we are in public (happened in church this past Sunday) I usually whisper to him telling him to think of something else or say a prayer to ask God to help him stop. If we are at home I feed on it by making him laugh harder - tickling, wrestling, playing, etc... Sounds practical, but it works for him. They need to know when it is ok and when it is inappropriate.

I notices you said your son may be ADHD. Many times Aspergers can have some behaviors and/or symptoms of an ADHD child (i.e. not focusing), so be careful.

The Martial Arts Therapy is conducted like a regular Karate Class

only it is for disabled children of all types. The kids learn karate

and earn belts (at their own level of course). Austin has been doing

this for approx 1 year and I have seen the greatest amount of growth

in him for focus, coordination and attitude. He feels like he can do

a sport like all the other kids. From this group we've also made

some good friends and have formed playgroups and just had a hayride

party for the kids. I would recommend something like this. They

have a website for info (http://www.martialarts-therapy.com/).

Something else that Austin just loves (and we've also had great fun

at their social events too) is Therapeautic Horseback Riding.

Depending upon your location this may be difficult to find but well

worth it.

I wanted to ask you about the martial arts therapy. I am interested in

Debra, the martialarts-therapy sounds great. Is it any where near Dallas? I think Karac would love it. My name is Pat, and I am Karac's grandmother. I have also been in charge of his ABA program for 6 years. He is now nine. Thanks so much for sharing this information. God bless, Pat K

Hello and family,

Welcome to the group. And yes you are in the right place, we all are from

different parts but we share something in common, we have a kid or a baby

with Down Syndrome, that is what makes the list very special. My name is

Mabel Comas, I'm one of the quite ones in here, I don't post often but enjoy

everybodys posts. Iam the proud mom of a 32.5 months old g-b-g, Carolina,

Cristian and a. a has d-s. Something we didn't knew until she

was born, I had a good and a healthy pregnancy. My biggest worry was how she

was going to develop and if she was going to have other major health

conditions. So far all she is been in the hospital for her ear tubes. And

two weeks ago she had her eyes checked and she needs glasses. She came to

our lives with one purpose, only God knows it, as for me Iam very happy I

have her, she is a bless. Again welcome to this list, you will find comfort

when you need it, answers and you will laugh with some of the stories. You

will also enjoy all the loving and caring people in this list. We are here

for you anytime. You take care and have a great day.

Mabel, mom to Carolina, Cristian and a-ds 32.5 months old

dear kristen,

welcome to the group. this group is a wonderful source of everything,

support, knowledge, laughter and appreciation that there are so many people

out there that have things so much worse. i am mom to taylor 7 1/2, triplets

brittany, alexandra, and james (ds) who just turned 2 11-23-01. i am ashamed

to say that i had a real hard time accepting downs syndrome. james was very

sick when he was born so the ds sort of was the last of my concerns. it was

almost like when i would try and help patients with a dying family member. i

was shocked, angry, extremely sad, and then i mourned. i had no help so i

didn't really have time to let it affect me. right now i am totally at peace

with it, he is the most lovable little boy that i ever saw. when i figure

out how to do it i will post his picture. the best of luck to you and your

family. there are some amazing women in this group, i don't know how they do

it, they are an inspiration to me. if i can help please let me know. julie
