Angie,

I know what you mean. I can remember turning 25 and thinking the same

thing, but 25 is really young. I was a little depressed because I

hadn't figured out what I wanted to do with my life at that point and I

remember thinking " I'm supposed to have this figured out by now....but

you know what, I still havent's figured it out and I've finally decided

that it's really not all that important. I'm a mother now, and that

has been my priority for the past year and probably will be for another

year or so (well, it will be for the rest of my life, but I'm talking

in terms of me also going back to work). At some point I know that I

will find what it is I was meant to do and what it is I will be HAPPY

doing. I know it's got to be something working with people and using

my life experiences to help others who may be going through the same

things I have gone through...preferably it will be working with kids.

I think I'd really like to be a teacher and maybe a Guidance Counselor

at some point...it's just a matter of going back to school and getting

my teacher certification. Anyway, my point is....don't let that whole

1/4 of a century thing bother you and don't stress out if you haven't

got it all figured out yet. We are all works in progress and we'll all

get it figured out eventually, so don't let the number bother you (sort

of like the scale). Age truly is a state of mind...you'll learn to

appreciated being the age you are because you have learned so much in

the years that you've been around, but your wise enough to know that

you've still got so much more to learn, too...does that make sense?

who remembers oh too well how it felt turning 25 and her theme song was

that 4 non blondes song that said " 25 years and my life is still,

trying to get up that great big hill... " but whose theme song now is

that poem that that put to music (can't think of the name) but it

starts off " Class of 1999, wear sunscreen " and it says something like

" don't worry if you haven't got it all figured out, some of the most

succesful people I know didn't know at 25 what they wanted to do with

the rest of their life and some of the most interesting people I know

still don't know what they want to do at 40 " (I'm paraphrasing really

badly here, but it's a great song)... :)

Carol,

Your problems with your son sound exactly like the problems I had with my

daughter. She had the same symptoms beginning at the same age. Her

psychiatrist also thought she was bipolar and put her on Depakote with

disasterous results. Lithium had no effect at all on her negative behaviors.

It wasn't until we got a diagnosis of Tourette's at age nine and

subsequently put her on resperidal, that we were able to get the proper

medicine/help. I hope you get some help soon, it's very frustrating, and

definitely does not make our kids the most well loved in a school setting.

The raporte with the therapist is so important. I often use a parellel in a

discussion (The way you cheer for your favourite player is how your mom is

going to cheer for you) but otherwise, it seems unfair to you and to Danny

to be spending therapeutic time on trivial subjects. Is it possible to bring

this matter up with the therapist? Can you make sure that ERP is being

discussed? Maybe you two can view what progress has been made? I cant stress

enough the value of being an educated consumer!

You didnt mention where you live. Perhaps someone here can recommend a

good therapist in your area?

Dont forget to take care of yourself!!

Hi, I have found out that on most insurance policies if you just call

and ask they will work with you. It is so hard to find the right

therapist. If you have a friend that is recommending one, I would

check with your insurance to see if it would be covered.

My son is 15 and just recently been diagnosed with ocd, we are

looking into the meds and therapy.

Good Luck,

Hi Berky:

Thanks for posting about yourself and your daughter and your struggles to

get good treatment for her. Many of us on the list have also experienced

very similar struggles.

Whereabouts in Canada do you live? knows about resources in Ottawa

and I have done some extensive research about treatment resources in

Vancouver for my nephew who lives there. We also have Shellie who knows

about resources in .

Do you have Dr. March and Mulle's book, " Obsessive Compulsive

Disorder in Children and Adolescents? " IF you daughter gets competently

applied CBT based on this book and responds well to Celexa at an OCD

appropriate dosage (usually about 3 times the dosage for depression), you

will see her regain control of her life and be able to boss OCD back into

the background of her (and your) lives. Please know that the amount of

recovery possible is amazing. OUr son Steve was very sick with OCD, pretty

much constantly ritualizing and/or obsessing and with treatment his

symptoms are much more manageable and he has learned how to boss back to an

impressive degree.

Take care, aloha, Kathy (H)

Hello Berky, please don't be overwhelmed by the problems and

frustrations that are posted here. It's a support group and so you

might expect to read posts from parents of kids who are having

problems. One of the nice things here is, no matter what baffling or

bizarre situation is going on in your home, you can bet it's familiar

to someone on the list, who will likely have some good suggestions.

Working out treatment for OCD can be frustrating, but nowhere near as

frustrating as living with untreated OCD. I wish for side-effectless

SSRIs and other meds which work as easily and quickly as antibiotics

too! I imagine most of us do :-)

But the meds--and Exposure and Response Prevention therapy--can work

miracles for our kids, allowing them to gain their lives back from

OCD's grip. In addition to the posts about the kids who are having

problems, there are also many which detail our kids' improvement and

recovery.

Keep us posted as you and your daughter begin your journey to

overcoming OCD. Welcome to the group Berky. :-)

Hello and welcome Marla. Love your name! I've been here almost one year and
