Getting a trach is a very personal and serious decision. I cannot tell you

what is right for you. I have mine because I do not have the lung strength to

cough up anything in my airpipe. Are you able to cough deep & hard? What is

your lung capacity? Do you get respiratory illnesses a lot (colds, flu,

bronchitis, pneumonia)?

From a physiological standpoint, suctioning through mouth into the throat

triggers the gag reflex which induces vomiting. Vomiting is dangerous in this

instance because often leads to aspiration (choking).....defeating the

purpose of suctioning to begin with. Plus, anatomically speaking, when you

suction by mouth to the throat, you get the esophagus (food pipe) not the

trachea (airpipe) if the epiglottis is where it should be. This would give

new meaning to the phrase, " suck your guts out! "

I don't think a trache is the answer at all. I'd get the tonsils out first.

My son had a problem with sleep apneas because his tonsils were huge. No

problem since they were removed.

vicki

do you think i should get a trach? im worried SICK about choking and

not being able to breathe. Plus I have huge tonsils-even worse. Do

you think a suction could just help me...or do you think a trach is

the answer?

I can get stuff out of my lungs. What I am worried about is choking,

not aspirating into my windpipe. But something lodged in my throat.

My pulmonary function is like 27%

Vicki,

I too can eat alot and it scares me too! I am almost 8 months out and am

still loosing. I do have to " diet " to loose.

Most of the time I can eat normal amounts of food. Some times more. And it is

very rare that I can only eat 1/2 a burger. I can eat a whole one no problem

with fries too!.

I would like to hear from other post ops that are more than 6 months out to

tell us how much they can eat.

Hello, .

I am a little over 6 months out and I can eat a good amount of food, but

this is only if I eat very slowly.

If I eat fast, I eat less and feel full fast. If I eat too fast, I just feel

sick and have to wait for about 15 minutes before I feel better. I have

really gotten better at not letting this happen.

What I sometimes do is make a nutritious meal and give myself a good portion

and take maybe an hour or two to eat it. Sometimes this may be my only

" meal " for the day and then I pick at nuts, seeds, fruit, etc. I am happy to

say that I do make good choices. I have a treat every now and then, but it's

so nice not to even really WANT the junk anymore.

I would suggest that if you find yourself eating good-sized portions, try to

make sure they are healthy choices.

I wish you the best.

I know that you asked for post-ops that were 6 months out or more, but I

just wanted to respond. I am almost 4 months out and sometimes feel that I

am able to eat too much food. It scares me to death too, but I am also,

still losing weight. So far, I'm down about 60 pounds, but fear that I'm

going to mess something up, by eating. I have been able to tolerate

everything, except rice. That has been the only thing that comes back up.

The things that I do the best with are plain popcorn, grilled chicken salad,

and mashed potatoes. I feel 100% better than I ever have in my life, but

everytime I put food in my mouth, I can't help but get a little worried.

Vicki, and ,

I was glad to see this topic of eating too much addressed here because

I too am having this problem. I am 10 months out and am amazed and

concerned about how much I can eat. Some days I feel like I can not

fill up. I was actually getting concerned that something might have

gone haywire. I guess I assumed that I would always fill up quickly

but now I see that some of us are able to consume quite a bit. I would

love to hear from somebody at Dr. R's office comment on this. Is this

normal for some people?

Vicki, I too am able to eat just about anything including sweets,

which is a disadvantage because I am back with the mental struggle

again. As far as being on a plateau for six months, I know there have

been others on this site that have been on a plateau that long and

still lost more weight. I would guess that you are not done at 11

months and have at least until 18 months out to lose some more. But I

understand the concern as I have been at a standstill for 2 months and

also worry that I may be done. We just need to hang in there and give

it more time. I have heard many people say that to break a plateau,

try changing something in your routine. Drink more, increase protein,

and with exercise, either increase or decrease what you are doing now.

Good luck!

I also can eat anything without getting sick. The further out you get,

the more you can eat. What I find, is that if I eat a lot of carbs and

sweets, I can continually eat all day. It is like I never get full. I

was also on a plateau for 3 months and everyone hits a plateau sooner or

later. The rule of thumb here is to eat mostly healthy foods such as

protein, fruits and vegetables and limit the sweets and carbs.

It just seems harder to practice then preach. LOL

Take garlic pills or eat a ton of garlic. (and I mean twice to three times

the amount recommended on the bottle!)

Garlic is a natural antibiotic and works great for sinus and ear infections.

Also, take some kind of alergy stuff (I have prescription zyrtec) daily. You

can drink REALLY STRONG tea (iced or hot) and it is supposed to help as well.

You need to also take an anti-inflamatory, such as ibuprophen or napricin.

If you cant take them, try extra strength tylenol.

I know how it is to be bitchy with the sinus trouble. I have been putting

off sinus surgery for it for YEARS. I am a big chicken!

I just did this search. It is best to type in Google " Plastic surgeons " or

" plastic surgery, " then do a search within a search for type of procedure. It

makes it so much easier.

There is also a - ossg plastic surgery - you can

join. They post their pics there too. The group is people from all

types of weightloss surgeries now doing plastics.
