Guest guest Report post Posted February 26, 2003 Hi, Pat. Are you taking the MTX by injection or orally (I can't remember, sorry!). And how much if it is orally? I ask because my doctor switched me to a schedule where I take 3 pills one day, then 2 the next. He said they do that when a patient has a really bad reaction to taking the pills all at once. Just thought I'd mention it if it is something ask your doctor about! Have a good night,

There is a tremendous growth and strength that comes from these sort of things happening to someone. I think you grow in ways that would never be possible in any other way. All I can say is hopefully I have learned any lessons it was meant to give me and also that I have had my " share " of those types of growning experieces....been there, done that and NEVER want to do that again....But that time in my life was valuable in its own way. I learned so much about myself and the responses of others. I also learned who were my true friends and who ran the other way out of fear of facing me (or the death experience)...you read about it all the time..the reactions of family and friends at times like this...it's true what they say...it scares the shit out of people (esp. when you and your friends are all quite young).... I think of the past and when I cried and cried at night...sometimes I think I was mourning losing who I used to be as much as losing my husband. I changed forever. BUT now I can see it was benificial. Pat (not trying to bring anyone down....just sharing a little piece of myself to anyone who might be interested...) Guest guest Report post Posted November 23, 2003 In a message dated 11/23/2003 1:53:22 PM Eastern Standard Time, writes: Can ya all tell me what it is like to have it done the IVIG way is there any more riskes this way, also is due to start school (5 half day's a week)January 8th so i am also worried about that as it is the wrong time of the year to go to school for him as he suffers more with his chest throat more than any thing+viruses. Any help and advise would be be great form ya all. Pat Pat, My son has been recieving IVIG since he was 4 years old. He has had a port for 3 years. We go to our local hospital to have it done, since that is what my immunologist prefers for Kody. Since your son has recieved gammaglobin by sub q, the risks of reactions etc would most likely be relatively low for him. The thing is, you can premedicate if necessary, and also go at a very slow rate t o begin with and slowly step it up. We have discussed sub q for Kody and have decided that it just isn't for us. He would not tolerate the needle pokes, and the whole concept would be harder for him anxiety wise. That is just our opinion. We go for IVIG every 3 weeks like clockwork. Kody gets to watch cartoons all day and be king of the remote, and I get to sit quietly and read or do hand crafts. Not something I usually have time to do! Kody's port is awesome for us. It is a decision that each parent has to weigh the pros and cons of with deep consideration. For us, Kody was a very hard stick, getting his IV in was a nightmare and he was becoming an emotional wreck over it. The port has reduced his anxiety tremendously and has come in very handy not just for IVIG but for IV antibiotics as well. We are very careful about sterile feilds etc with Kody when he gets accessed because of the port, and we watch for signs of infection at all times. Kody's is completely under the skin, so when it isn't accessed it is completely protected from germs etc. For us, doing IVIG is now a way of life, when we first started I thought, gee, do this every three weeks for the rest of his life??? Wow. But now it's " normal " and I occasionally forget that not everyone does this! LOL And Kody LOVES going to the hospital, says he's there to see his " friends " , and will march around to all the desks in admitting and announce " I'm here! " , he has friends in the gift shop, in the cafeteria, on all the nursing floors, and most recently amongst the construction workes working on the new Betty Ford Breast Cancer Ward. It's beeing built adjacent to the Children's hospital, so he watches them from his window and waves and waves. Last time a group of the guys brought him a hard hat of his very own. Will we ever switch to sub q? I don't know, maybe when he's much older, but for now we'll stick to the good old IVIG! Diane, Mom to Kody, age 7, precious and precocious who has Di Syndrome, Hypogammaglobulinemia, epilepsy, asthma, chronic encopresis, and severe cognitive regression. Also Mom to Arika age 16, Kaila, age 12, and Sami age 9 (she happens to also be Dyslexic), and wife/soulmate to for 10 years. check out my website: www.geocities.com/schmidtzoo/SNAK
