The CDC pics of reactions are shocking!

Also, many of your links did not work for me. Especially the first three links??

Hey Angie,

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're saying about the chickenpox. As far as

I understand, you can only get shingles if you have already had cp; no immunity

to shingles for having cp. I never had cp so I cannot get shingles. Kind of

opposite of what you wrote. Do you see what I mean?............Anita

Totten <afaltotten@...> wrote:

>

Chickenpox - seriously no big

deal, and better to actually get it because you get immunity then

against shingles, which is much worse. Hep B - that's for drug users

and prostitutes (and their johns). Tetanus -- pretty rare and not

communicable.

The big killer diseases were things like tuberculosis, typhoid,

scarlet fever... none of which we vaccinate against. And the new

vaccines, for things like pneumoccocal illness are tackling minor

things that were not common for children to get.

My thoughts. -Angie

The 10% vaccination came form a book that I read about 15-20 yrs ago. It also

said that the reason that smallpox largely disappeared from the earth was that

people changed their bedding. That is, most people used to sleep on bags full of

straw. It was found out that the smallpox virus just loved the environment of

straw. So, when people, for the most part, stopped sleeping on straw, the small

pox virus was no longer in the vicinity where it could be transmitted to

people.

Vida,

I highly recommend checking out MotheringDotCommune:

We did the Hib. If you'd like to know why, please email me off-list. If

Hi!

My son ,started fevering around 10 years old. He also was diagnosed with

after...he tested neg. for other fever disorders and after we tried

prednisone with one of his episodes and he was almost 100% better within hours

of the medication.

After a few episodes with prednisone he stopped fevering for over a

year...then...he had an episode in AUG 2006 (which we gave him pred.) Then he

didn't fever again till AUG 2007

I don't know if he just normally would be having episodes so far apart or if

it's due to the prednisone.

Hope that helped. Cheri

confused by my daughters condition. She started getting fevers when

she was 5..which seems to be a little old compared to what I have

read today about your children. She would get a fever about every

four months...get up to about 105+ (if I didn't catch it soon enough,

I don't know how high it would have gotten). She would be sick for

about 2 weeks. The doctors were stumped...she had so many tests run

At Boston Children's Hospital...they had no idea. We moved down to

Gainesville, Fl. and a doctor here..on a lark..gave her prednisone to

see if it would take the fever away..it did, so he said she had

. We have had no tests done.

Since she first started taking prednisone, her episodes come about

every 5 weeks now, but with a lower fever. When I see that her

fevers are going to go high, I ask the doctor for Prednisone, if the

fevers only stay at 101 or lower, I don't give it to her.

The last two times I have given her prednisone, it takes the fever

away for a day, and then the fevers return again.

I am always concerned that is not her condition...the thought

plagues me..could it be something serious and I'm just missing it.

I hate it when she gets these fevers..I feel so bad for her. I also

feel like I am on guard dute for two weeks...make sure the fever

stays managable.

Is there anybody there whose child started the fevers later?

Does this sound familiar to anybody?

Thanks for the help,

Hi

If you live in Gainesville, there is a Dr Skoda- who is

affiliated with Shands at the University of Florida. She assisted

another doc who is now at All Childrens with the diagnosis for my

son... although he was initially diagnosed as after years NIH

isolated a genetic mutation which may be the cause...

Currently he is diagnosed as PFS with unknown etiology as he does

not have .

Dr. Skoda- did advise genetic studies and for us to join the

research study at the National Institute of Health... which we did.

Hope this helps you get a more accurate diagnosis.

Welcome, I'm glad you've found us.? It's wonderful to find a group of parents

and children going through exactly what you are.? This group has been a great

help in our journey with my son's periodic fever. Zachary's symptoms sound a lot

like , but I'm glad his doc is looking into all options since periodic

fevers can overlap on so many levels.

We have noticed my son's episodes more sever during the summer months.? My

Hi Holly,

Welcome to the group. You will find a lot of helpful information here.

I just wanted to mention that my son (2-1/2 yrs old) also

experienced the sensitivity to light, but seems okay now. In June it

was so bad that when I took him outside and we were in the sunlight, he

started crying and holding his eyes all the time and just cried to go

back inside. I had to keep sunglasses on him when we went outside for

several weeks. I had taken him to a pediatric eye doctor and his eyes

are perfectly fine. The doctor said he will outgrow the sensitivity to

the brightness. At the end of July this symptom seemed to disappear, we

are very thankful.

My son also has sensitivity every day when I brush his teeth. I have to

use a soft brush and brush very carefully so I don't hit his gums a lot.

I don't see any sores though and he goes for checkups every 6 months, no

cavities or gum issues.

has been taking Cimetidine since last August and it seems to

have helped him tremendously. He only had 3 fevers this year and they

were very mild! Last year, he was fevering every two weeks. Also, he

is now old enough to tell me if his " boo boo " is coming, which is

helpful.

For some reason, many of the children with don't catch the regular

colds that other children do, but actually got his first cold

two weeks ago. I was kind of relieved as this may be a sign that he is

getting over . There has been a cold going around our area with

the coughing and runny nose, well he got it. No fever, but the cough

and runny nose. It went away and my daughter caught it.

Good luck with your son.

Bobbie

,

I did not have any success with shots in my knee. I had two different times

one that I got every week for six weeks and one i got every week for three

weeks. Neither of which worked for me. But some people do have great success.

It will be something that you have to try to see if it will work for you.

Don,

I have had three different surgeons. The first two were done by one doctor

and the operations didn't work. The second set, the osteotomies were done

another doctor. The carticel is done by another doctor. I am 11 months out on

the

first carticel. Not pain free although I wish I was and maybe I will be. I

was told it takes 2 years to know. But I am getting ready to have the operation

done on the other knee. My surgeon that did my osteotomies referred me to

the doctor who does the carticel. They went to medical school together. When I

am finished with the carticel treatment I will go back to my ortho doctor who

did the osteotomies.

So I have had three operations on my right knee and 2 on my let knee, when

its all over this year I will have had 4 operations on my left knee. I hope

that will be it.

I hope to be pain free one day.

How has your Carticel worked out? How long ago did you have it?

I have had the Carticel surgery and am very heppy with it. Cut, edged and

weed eated the yard yesterday with no trouble. I have limits, but overall

am virtually pain free.

Hi - amazing, the dedication to battling this nasty disease.  Does anyone have

any positive thing(s) to say about injection therapy.  I have had two

arthroscope clean outs and an osteotomy and I think I may be done with surgeries

for a while - but I'd like to see if injections are worth the trouble. .

Joi,

I have 2 lateral releases, I have 2 osteotomy's, I have had one carticle and

I am getting ready to have another lateral release and the second carticle.

So when I am finished I will have had 7 operations. Hopefully that is it.

Is this all with the same surgeon? Of course, I have had 5 myself on just

my right knee.

How has your Carticel worked out? How long ago did you have it?

I have had the Carticel surgery and am very heppy with it. Cut, edged and

weed eated the yard yesterday with no trouble. I have limits, but overall

am virtually pain free.

,

I totally agree. At Hospital For Special Surgery, all docs use a numbing

spray so there is only a slight sting, if that, when the needle goes in.

Also, a number of studies have come out that show Synvisc has double the

potential side effects and no more effective than Euflexxa (a newer product).

Also, some people can't use Synvisc because they are allergic to dairy/chicken.

Euflexxa is allergy free. HSS has been switching to Euflexxa.

I had the 3 Euflexxa shots and am essentially pain free for the past 3 mos.
