Regina congrats I wish I could lose weightSent via BlackBerry from T-MobileFrom: "adryan110200" Date: Fri, 20 Mar 2009 04:35:17 -0000<100-plus >Subject: Hi Everyone! Just wanted to introduce myself.. My name is Regina and Im 27 years old. I have been married for 7 years and have 4 beautiful children. I have been over weight most of my life, heck as long as I can remember. I have learned my families habits of bad eating and never finding time to exercise. I have been a yo-yo dieter for the last 10-15 years.. I remember starting my first diet around age 12. I recently found a copy of Dr Phils 7 keys to success book.. I read it and it just didnt click, I pigged out all weekend and didnt think twice about it.. I started to re-read the book again and right there in chapter one it clicked! I think I have finally found the reasons I have never lost weight, and unlocked the secrets to my success. I can say I have faithfully been eating healthy, started to exercise and just over all feeling happy. I have never lasted on a diet more then a week tops! I have been taking it one day at a time now for 2 weeks or so.. I started at 243.8lbs. I weigh more now then when I gave birth last year! So far as of monday my weight was at 229.6! I havent seen the 220's in 3 years! So thats my story! I look forward to meeting everyone and walking down the weightloss road with you! Regina in Denver

Welcome, ! Good for you to keep that crazy ped at bay, and to figure out

about vaccines so early on. I vaccinated my oldest for longer than that and am

always impressed with those of you who do stop or refuse them completely before

having problems. Very smart. It's good to have you here!

Must be quiet "over there" because all of the fun people got tired of being put in time out and left, lol.

Hi fellow Achalasians. My name is Sam and I'm 29. I live in Eastleigh, Hampshire

with my Husband and 3 boys 11, Jake 9 and Olly 7. I was diagnosed

with Achalasiain in May 2011 after suffering for 18 mths and many many tests.

Originally I was diagnosed with a hetitas hernia, then reflux, then they thought

it was anxiety attacks but nothing could explain not being able to keep solids

down. After a barium swallow which showed no movement on the barium into my

stomach they finally admitted there was a problem. I cried with relief as I was

starting to feel like I was going mad. Next came a mamotry which confirmed

Achalasia. I have lost 33lbs and am currently living on liquids. I have had a

balloon dilation which only helped for 3 sms. So now am awaiting a heller

myotomy with partial Fundoplication in 9 days. I am getting nervous now but

having read all of your helpful posts and reasured. I'm so glad to have found

this web site as it is

lovely to be able to communicate with others suffering the same as me. Well

that's about all for now. X x Sam

Hi Sam, I am new here too and I also have 3 boys (aged 14, 16 and nearly 18)

Hope your op goes well. I am hoping for mine in about a month, so I am keen to

hear how others go and what I can look forward too afterwards.

I hope your HM goes as smoothly as mine did in late August, with almost no pain

(I only took one pain killer after the first day) and no problem eating anything

after about 4 1/2 weeks other than the need to eat more slowly with liquids (I

find milk and juice and even room temperature iced tea work well).

I would say go very slowly with the eating the first 2 weeks: if I ate too much

too fast too soon I would have some pain and regurgitation. Greek yogurt and

scrambled eggs bothered me more than the mashed potatoes. I actually found rice

easier to eat but couldn't have that until after 2 weeks. One way I pampered

myself was to try to find different varieties and brands of the soft food. For

example, I bought Yukon gold mashed potatoes, tasty risottos instead of chicken

flavored rice. One soft meal that is absolutely delicious is an Indian spinach

dish with paneer (a soft cheese) and sometimes rice. I also would add butter and

cheese to frozen creamed spinach for a tasty meal.

After the second week I never had pain and only occasionally a little

regurgitation (after popcorn!). I do find myself burping a little more, but just

quiet little burps! But my esophagus was not very distended to begin with.

But it's early days yet! One thing that helped me through the years was trying

to use my ingenuity to come up with things I could eat that were healthy and

things I could prepare quickly when the muscle opened. Towards the end, using

the trick of drinking soda before a meal that I read about online really helped,

but only for about 5 months. For me it wasn't so much the problem of swallowing

(I could do okay on a liquid diet with Ensure), but the problem of constant

regurgitation after swallowing, kind of like hydraulics! And I was lucky not to

have much chest pain. Thank goodness for liquid vitamins and Tylenol!

Welcome, Sam. 9 more days, hang in there. I had my HM on 7/5/2011 and doing

well, gained back the weight, and eating most anything I want. Glad the group is

helpful. It has been a wealth of information and support for me.

I couldn't eat solid food for a month before my surgery and could barely get any

liquids down that last week so I have to tell you about my first meal. My

surgeon told me I could eat whatever I wanted as soon as I wanted with no

restrictions. My problem was that I was afraid to eat. Had some Ensure the day

after surgery when I came home from the hospital that night but I was just too

scared to eat. I was so used to food not getting into my stomach and

regurgitating it later. The next day (2nd post op day) hubby had scheduled some

workers to be in the house and I was running up and down the stairs trying to

tidy things up (which I paid for later pain-wise). Hubby had ordered a pizza for

himself. He offered me a slice as I was running up the stairs and without

thinking I grabbed one. I was half way up the staircase when I stopped and

realized I had eaten most of the slice. I tried to regurgitate that evening but

nothing came up then or any time in the 3 years after my surgery. Since I'm a

nutritionist it is kind of embarrassing to admit it but that was how I got

beyond my fear of eating.

Remember, from the LES's point of view, most foods are soft once they are chewed

thoroughly and swallowed with a lot of water. But some doctors recommend

patients eat soft foods after surgery which would mean avoid raw produce, nuts,

and seeds that have to be chewed into very small particles. I had more problems

with soft foods since I have a tendency to swallow larger mouthfuls of them just

because they are soft. Bread causes the most problems but not if I take small

bites and chew it into nothingness. Nothing is going to damage your esophagus.

It's just that the LES is cut and that mean inflammation for a day or so until

it heals.

I would suggest you bring a few of those instant heat pads (the brand in the US

is Therma-care). I've had several laparoscopic surgeries but this is the first

time the gas pain in the shoulder was that bad. Heat pads on the shoulder really

helped with the pain.

If you are prone to migraines, bring you own meds with you. That was the worst

pain I had -it took forever for the nurses to get my Imitrex to me.

The best pain reduction tool I had was a pillow. Don't let them move you to a

gurney without giving you a pillow to hold to your abdomen. Don't even move up

on the bed without a pillow to hold to your belly.

I am not able to eat large meals, my stomach becomes too uncomfortable. I rarely

stuff myself so no big problem there.

Good luck!

I was afraid too that eating too much too soon would cause damage and I did have

some pain with scrambled eggs and Greek yogurt the first few days. I ended up

just cutting back on those the first 2 weeks and timing my meals (3 hours

between meals). Try to find foods/drinks you relish even if they are more

expensive: it's only for a couple weeks.

In fact, after I posted this week I had some minor pain for a few hours (maybe a

combination of cranberry juice and pasta with tomato sauce? or maybe just a

bug?). But it passes. I do find though that I still have to eat slowly and drink

a lot of liquids. I find milk is very helpful when I get a sticking feeling, as

well as a pause for a few minutes. After having the stuck feeling for days

before the HM, this slight delay is easy to take. I try to get to work an hour

early and have a leisurely, relaxed breakfast when I get there. Lunch is the

toughest because of the time limit, so a smaller easier meal to swallow is best.

My biggest pleasant surprise is that I don't regurgitate for the most part. I

had some acid reflux years before achalasia symptoms at bedtime, and I can't

remember when I didn't regurgitate when brushing my teeth in the morning. Now, I

have almost none, occasionally after a fatty dish or popcorn. Some burping after

swallowing though. I couldn't sleep on my left side without coughing and I even

had problems with my endoscopy when I was on my left side. But now, nothing at

night so I can eat a little later. So my fears of developing bad GERD after

surgery have proven unfounded.

That doesn't mean the operation doesn't have risks or someone could have only a

little benefit.

Achalasia. I have lost 33lbs and am currently living on liquids. I have had a

balloon dilation which only helped for 3 sms. So now am awaiting a heller

myotomy with partial Fundoplication in 9 days. I am getting nervous now but

having read all of your helpful posts and reasured. I'm so glad to have found

this web site as it is lovely to be able to communicate with others suffering

the same as me. Well that's about all for now. X x Sam

was reading those posts and thinking about  the surgery we (all or some) have

had done.. because of a prior surgery many years ago.. i  was unable to get a

wrap... i just got the heller M. but i have had no reflux at all. and my surgeon

didnt want me eating anything sharp or anything after the surgery.. like no taco

chips, nuts or steak or roast.. etc. so i didnt  but i was like the post i

read.. i was really afraid to eat almost.. but i will tell you what scared me

most was the possibility of enjoying eating so much that i would eat everything

in sight. well i havent! LOL! and i can have coffee again in the mornings. Still

in the size 8 jeans.. all is good...before the surgery i also would regurg,

every morning when brushing teeth.. all the  stuff that builds up in the E.

while we sleeping. (between getting up and regurging at night-which was common

thing for me)  i am so glad i had this done, and 119 pounds (sam) for someone

that tall is really

skinny... I will be happy to hear you telling us that you are gaining and

loving to eat good food! kim bailey
