Hi Donna! Glad to hear that Melmark is totally on your side. It

sounds like it all went well. Remember, even in October, that ESY is a

TEAM decision, and if you and all Maddie's teachers, aides and

therapists are in agreement for all the reasons you will have spelled

out in this IEP which will continue in October, there really will be

little for Philly to do but to comply. No bureaucrat can overrule the

conclusions of a TEAM effort. None! Realistically, you and I know

that our kids change little in 5 months--I can't see how Philly can

then turn around and say that Maddie would no longer need her ESY

because all the reasons why it was given in the first place still

exist. Rather, they will know that they cannot win and will concede.

Again, I think it was a ploy to see how much they can get away with--

and I'm sure that someone, somewhere didn't fight like you and so in

the end it probably did save Philly some money. Dammit!

When are we going to get Miss Maddie and together? I

remember you saying that Miss Maddie doesn't like kids shorter than

her--how tall is she? is a lean, mean 42 pounds, 42 inches

last time we checked (March). Is that compatible with Miss Maddie?

Did I see postings correctly that Gail and Margaret are coming to

Philly sometime soon?? With my luck, it will be around June 14-19,

when I'm in Colorado for a work-related meeting.

Best wishes,

Ginny

Hi Donna,

Emersyn is not as cranky but the reflux contines. My oldest son asked me why

I just didn't wear a garbage bag over my clothes. You get the picture. Zeb is

doing okay depending on what day you ask,LOL. He decided to change his bedtime

this week. I have been working on time with him and he used it to his

advantage the stinker. He's always one step ahead of me. Thanks for asking.

Hi Donna,

High fives to Maddie!!!! I hope she continues to surprise you. It's cold and

rainy in Ct. too. My event was rained out again and I trucked home soaking wet

and shivering.

Hey honey, whatever you feel you can do. No problem. I know moving is

nuts and we can always do it again (heck, you're closer in Lancaster now). I

don't know how long the dinner will go......Ginny probably won't get here til

7, so I'll hold off til then (I always serve at that time or later for guests

anyhow). Gail will be getting to Philly around 5, so I may suggest to her

that she go check in at her hotel and come after rush hour traffic.

Maddie is up to .75 of risperdal and will be adding buspar probably

next week (well, as soon as I remind him....LOL) HEY, if Maddie starts

talking, I don't care if she gains FIFTY pounds....LOLOL

<<Maddie has hidden talents. Just you wait and see!>>

Oh yea.....this morning she had n ROARING at the breakfast table.....I

have been making goofy faces at her to see if she will mimic....we were doing

this eye thing and she was such a stitch!!! Bren says, MOM, I think that

medicine makes her high....LOLOL Course nobody gets a bigger kick out of

Maddie than Maddie....LOL

Hi Donna,

I don't mind, it's for the public to view anyway. I am still a staunch

believer in inclusion for Zeb and do not regret the path I chose for him

whatsoever.

He will encounter negative attitudes in the community during his lifetime. He

may be better prepared. The article does strengthen my due process battle.

No problem Ginny!!!!! No disruption to Miss Maddie (sides, she eats by

herself at 5....can't deviate, ya know??? LOL) Be prepared, she may be rude

(they used to lovingly call her Miss Rude at her EI center....LOL), but she's

always cute!!!!! And a game of ring around the rosey always gets her to like

you...;-)

Thanks Donna,

A-ok. It did not hit us that bad just heavy rain with lots of wind.

I guess it'll be mosquito city after the rain calms down. I hate it

when gets bitten by them.

Donna, I've been keeping track of cutie pie's updates. Thanks for

sharing the great progress going on. Is Maddie on the second med.,

now?

Hope your meeting went well if it was today?

This is all new to me so I'm enjoying on what y'all been discussing

on the communication issue. I know with all the help you have and

from this list have been great to read. You're just awesome with

your " parent power " .

has been under the weather lately again, is finally

recovering from it. Same thing the periodic fever syndrome that

comes and goes with the low grade fever but is still pretty

cooperative when asked to do something or he just does it. He is in

the kissing stage as he has discovered the movements of his lips.

I'm having to tell him on the cheeks so that when he attends High

school he will not be accused of inappropiate touching.

Following are the Seven Effective Teaching Procedures used in the

clinic that is attending this summer: ABA/VB Therapy. So what

fun learning along.

1.Pairing: Pair yourself and the working environment with child's

reinforcers. Create a " bettering " of conditions instead of

a " worsening " of conditions when you say " come here " or " sit down " .

Never use " okay, now you can go play as the reinforcer. It will keep

the value of escape and working to " get away " high. Your child

should come to you or your therapist not run away.

2. Errorless teaching: Use prompts before they make an error as

much as possible. Remember that we want the child to push the lever

of responding not the lever of escape or self-stim. You will not

hear " no " , " not that one " or other words that harbor feelings of

failure and offer no reinforcement to your child.

3. Variable ratio: Always use a variable ratio when working

intensively. The child should never know when the reinforcer is

coming. Remember that intermittent reinforcement creates strong

behavior. You want your child's behavior of responding to our

demands to be very strong.

4. Mix and vary instructional demands: When teaching never present

the same demand over and over again (mass trial). Demands will be

mixed from all skill areas. These can be motor imitation, receptive

id, receptive commands, labels, echoics, receptive by feature,

function and class and intraverbals (fill-ins).

5. Intersperse Easy and Hard Demands: In the beginning, we will use

the ratio of 20% hard and 80% easy when presenting demands at the

table. Remember we are making the table a positive place to be as

well as the natural environment.

6. Short inter-trial interval (fast paced instruction): We want the

child's latency response to be short. If he/she does not answer we

will use whatever prompt level is necessary to get the response and

then immediately fade the prompt. Remember we want your child to

respond quickly as if he were in the natural environment. Not many

people, be it teachers or friends will wait 5-10 seconds for a

response.

7. Most-to-least Prompts: Instead of using least to most prompts,

which may allow for more mistakes, use a time delay prompt and fade

procedure. This is also less frustrating to the child because they

don't have to guess the answer and get it wrong before you give them

a prompt.

Permission from his therapist

http://www.treehousepediatrics.com/Techniques.html

Lets see how many can fulfill along with mom learning the

ropes of shaping, prompting, fading, chaining & differential

reinforcement with this new procedure.

Here is to Maddie's wonderful news. HUGS!

No bright news from this corner of the world. There are 2 teachers and 2

aides in 's classroom. The same people as last year. Well, at least it is

supposed to be that way. One of the teachers is on maternity leave until middle

of Oct., one aide (his favorite) is pregnant and having complications so they

have a sub aide for an indefinite period. On top of that the other teacher is

also pregnant and due in Feb. or March. It is going to be an interesting year

and he is supposed to be transitioning to high school for next year. I don't

think we will be transitioning if I have anything to say about it (which I do).

Other than the behavior problems brought on by school and a cut in our

in-home program is doing OK. He started anafranil this summer and it seems

to

have cut down on the need for rituals or the way a routine would turn into a

neg. thing resulting in upset because it wasn't the same every time.

Octoberfest is this weekend with bands and food. He and I will have a good

time.

Now that's one I've not heard of Karyn. Keep us posted. Also let us know

how you make out convincing the district 's not ready to transition.

Dont' you hate it when teachers go and get themselves pregnant......SO

annoying..;-)

Thanks for the update. Have fun at the Octoberfest!!!

responded very poorly to the SSRIs. It seems that anything that effects

his serotonin is not a good thing. So, the ped. psych. ended up going this

route to address 's needs.

He is getting his shoes on in the a.m. without fighting me and is even a bit

flexible about what shoes to wear. Dressing is also not an issue.

These are huge things to me. life if much nicer this way.

But, he is still anxious about things. He has to check his closet for his bag

every day to make sure I'm not sending him to respite (which he actually

really enjoys). He needs to know a " plan " for every evening and day.

Of course, his life has changed a lot with the service changes so not a huge

surprise there.

1 oz on an empty stomach while still in bed before getting up. Saw

parasites the next day in stool. The numbers stayed high for a week and a

half and then started to taper off till after two and a half weeks I didn't

see anything. I continued on till the bottle was empty.

Don't know if I mentioned that I did not notice any benefit from this. No

energy increase, so improvement in anyway that I could see. Except perhaps

psychological. Smile.

Blessings

Hi!

Glad Shane is getting better!!

and happy 1st birthday to your little

>one! wow, did that go by fast or what?

I have joked that it was both the LONGEST and the SHORTEST year of my life.

After certain milestones it did become easier/better -- coming to mind - 8

weeks, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months - those all were times when things

seemed to " turn around " and get better and better. The " golden age " is

really between 6 & 8 months, when they can sit, but can't really get

anywhere on their own! LOL! And, I think I really lucked out w/ an easy

baby. The first two months she did cry quite a bit in the late

afternoons/early evenings, but she always kind of slept at night (just

getting up to eat and then right back to sleep), plus she really can

enterain herself and play by herself - and always has been able to do that.

I could just sit her on the floor w/ some books or magazines and she'll look

at them for long periods of time. I'm sort of scared to have another one,

b/c what are the chances I'd get lucky again?! LOL! (Plus w/ 2 how do you

ever get any free time??!! At least I have nap times.....)

Take care!
