Oh Gosh GAil. That's awful. Maddie has been a bug lately with getting to

sleep. Not going down til 11 or midnight. Makes it REAL hard to wake her

a 6:45 in the morning. Sheesh!!!

I hope the melatonin works and you get some rest!!!!

Here's to rest for us all! LOL

Yea, Maddie's new teacher wrote a note in her book yesterday that she managed

to get some play dough down before they got to her. I called and

said... " HELLO??? You DO know she has pica, right? " . She said, Yes, but

she's so darned quick. I said, " Well, you'll have to be quicker!!!!! "

Donna

Ummmm, have to confess that I haven't been quick enough at times either.

Seth got a hold of a cigarette and it made him so sick. :-( Of all the

other horrible things he has eaten, that was the worst. Thought his heart

was coming through his chest. Very scary.

Gail, I'm sure you have been so busy!! I sure hope things calm down some

for you dear!! If things don't get worked out at MM, I'm in trouble.

There really are no other options where I live. But I believe these things

can be worked out; just that I'm going to have to be watching VERY closely.

Hoping and praying things get straightened out at MM Donna.

is doing very well Gail. Thanks for asking. She and her roommate

have had it with the third. called today saying ... " MOMMMMMMMMMMM,

this girl has a MAJOR personality disorder " ....LOLOL She got two of her

papers back and got a B+ on both. :-)

Wow!!! Congrats to on the B+'s , That's great! 3 is always a rough

number of people to get along.....personality disorder or not! LOL Seems

like they would put either 2 or 4 to a room. Anyone who grew up in a family

of three kids can tell ya it doesn't work. LOL

The little bug KNOWS that I've been known to grab the soap and hide it on top

of the bookshelf. Pretty dangerous since she now tries to climb it!

YIKES!!!! So Duff lifted her up and showed her that there was NO soap

there, and now we hide the soap in the closet behind the towels....LOLOL

It's really a pain because we have 4 bathrooms and I can't keep soap in

them!!!!!! LOL

Donna

Gosh, that's dangerous. Think maybe she will give up on the bar soap when

she can't find anymore and go to laundry detergent or something? LOL My

mind and experience tells me she will replace it with something else. :-(

Medical ASsistance is part of a loophole program here in Philly GAil.

Maddie has an MA card. Family income has no bearing. They pay for her

diapers and purchase equipment, pay for therapies, that kind of stuff.

Anything like that in NY??

Donna

Seth has a Medicaid Waiver...same thing. They won't touch this until Blue

cross denies...I appeal....they deny...and I have a hearing. YEAH!!!!!!! 5

years from now I might just have a safe place for him to sleep nights. Well,

unless he goes out the window, gets out and gets hit by a car, falls down the

stairs, gets to the kitchen and cuts himself or any little thing like that!

Not to mention the things in his room...eating plaster and woodwork,

electrical things or breaking windows. Then, if he gets hurt...I can get the

bed. Gosh, makes sense to me. LOL

Hiya Donna,

Yes, they certainly are quick. Pica is probably the hardest part of Leigh's

disability that we have to cope with, a few minutes out in yard and his

mouth is full of mud and grass...and if I don't catch him on time then his

hand goes straight for his full nappy and into his mouth. I've had some

surprises many a morning when I walk into his room to find him full of

BM's, face, mouth, linen, curtain, walls etc... I have now replaced the

carpet with floorboards (easier to clean and disinfect). Ofcourse on these

mornings we are all running late for school and work. I walked into his

class room late one morning and his teacher asked me why we were running

late, I told her I had sh & *t morning and she nodded her head as if to

understand, I said no I mean that literally. Unfortunately Leigh has an

obsession with all non-edible things, you name it, in the mouth it goes.

It's great to be able to write these things to someone who understands. I'm

having a great time reading all my messages everynight.

Talk to you later

LOLOLOL Sophie!!!!!!!! It makes sense that most people would not take you

literally. But here on this list, we KNOW how to take it!!!! LOL Yep,

Maddie is a major offender of ingesting her messes too!! SO SO GROSS!!!!

I buy her onesies that snap at the bottom and she has a harder time getting

her hands into it. No one else can change her when she messes by

themselves, except me. They call me " Speed Lightening " ......LOLOLOL

Hi Sophie,

I can certainly relate to what you're saying. puts everything in his

mouth as well...grass, dirt, bugs, dust, and poop. It is nauseating and not

something I even like to think about. UGH! We came home from a long day at

the doctor (some of our docs are 200+ miles away) and our dog hadn't been

able to wait to go out. Of course, found it and, well, you know the

rest. I could have just puked! I know that alot of the kids seriously eat

everything they can get their hands on and some, like Maddie, have a penchant

for something specific, like soap! LOL Although doesn't actually

ingest what he mouths, believe me, the fact that it goes IN his mouth is bad

enough!

Cheryl,

Somebody on the list gave a website address a few months ago for Special

Clothes for Special Children. They have the " onesies " for our kids. I

ordered some for during the Summer and they are wonderful!!! They

also have pajamas that zip up the back and you can order them with a snap

crotch! has a g-tube and will pull it out if he can get to it; he

also is a smearer. These clothes make it really hard for him to get to his

g-tube or his diaper!! YEAH!!!!

Cheryl,

I posted that site ( special clothes ) where you can purchase snap bottom

clothes and tees in another post also. But another thing that keeps busy

hands out is the snack t-shirt AND leotards. That's why I like winter

better when it comes to Maddie.....LOL

Donna, please tell me what it is that you put Maddie in that snaps at the

bottom so she can't reach her bm's. Angel is lots of fun with a BM. And

lightening fast. She is in panties as WE are all well trained to get her to

the toilet consistenly. She'd never get there if we weren't trained so

well. LOL. (Got sick of cleaning up the snow storms that happen when she

tears her pullups and diapers into tiny shreds) But, the prob is she is

lightening fast and has a bm in her panties and removes them asap and

smears, plays and eats. It is soooo quick, you just leave the room to go

stir a pot in the kitchen and it's happened. Need something that she can't

remove soooooo fast. Am finding that overalls slow her down a wee bit, and

don't leave alot of room for hands to get in, but can't afford to buy her a

whole new wardrobe. Any ideas?

Oh, Sophie and Donna,

You ladies make me laugh, cause your kids are soooooo like Angel. Got to be

so quick and never ever take your eye off them. It is all in the mouth and

ingested fast. I recall a time when my sister in law tried to get the rocks

out of Angel's mouth. Bad mistake. The rocks were pea gravel and wouldn't

have caused a choking incident so I didn't worry much, but my poor SIL tried

to get them out and once her hand was in Angel's mouth Angel locked her jaw

and held on tight. It was almost like she couldn't let go. It was like her

whole jaw just locked ridgid. And the more my SIL screamed the tighter it

went. It was horrible for both of them. Amazingly she didn't lose a finger

during that event. I don't put my finger in without alot of caution.

Amazingly Angel ate the plastic casing off her glasses yesterday and spit it

out. Usually this would have been eaten. I was pleased to see the pieces

on the floor, though not happy to know the glasses need to go back in for

repair. Stinker binker!

LOL Gail. No, Maddie hasn't figured out going up the leg, only down the

shirt. I'm in trouble when she figures that out I guess. She does know

how to undress herself, but can't unsnap the crotch hooks.

Oh and last night, my little princess was up the entire night. Poor baby

had it coming out both ends, then had dry heaves ALL NIGHT LONG. I DID

need help with THAT diaper last night, believe me. I yelled for Duff at 2

am.!!!!

Hi ladies

I had a locked jaw incident myself, about 2 weeks ago. I took Leigh to the

opthamologist, to get his eyes tested. It turned out he is long sighted and

cannot focus at a normal distance, the object has to be either right close

to his face or further away. The doctor decided he didn't need glasses as he

managed OK as he is (a bonus for everyone). Anyway we were waiting for an

elevator, when I decided to wipe his mouth which was full of chocolate and

CRUNCH...I decided not make a scene as it was crowded and endured the bite

in silence...another day, another adventure and never a boring day.

Hi Cheryl,

It's interesting you ask that question. I was watching a documentary on TV

one day about a child with pica and it was while I was watching this that I

realised that is exactly what Leigh's has. Before that I thought that the

" eating " was part of the autism. I then did some further investigation, got

some details from the net and the more the I read the more I realised that

these symptoms matched Leigh to a tee. I then took my notes to the ped and

told him that these symptoms describe Leigh and he confirmed that he did

indeed have Pica.

Have a great day.

Sorry to bring this issue again . Just as I thought I heard everyone

on this list about this eating disorder . My neighbor's kid with the

high-functioning autism whom I help in the mornings plucked both his

eyebrows and ate them . I thought he shaved them off , he did not

want to discuss about it . I let him be . Then I found out about it

just recently . Not by his mom , she never makes time to talk , not

that I needed to know . Just needed to share this . Thanks .

Irma,

I have a friend whose daughter did that to her lashes. Turned out to be a

stress thing, not pica. Wow, you are a good friend! You help with him and

she doesn't make the time to talk to your knowledgeable self about things?

She doesn't realize the help you could be or she is just overwhelmed with

things? Sorry, just nosy. LOL
