I am not familiar with this test. You need to find out if the test can be

administered as frequently as you wish to monitor, whether it be yearly or more

often. Many standardized tests can not be done more than once every 12 months

or the results are considered invalid.

In Texas I have found that most schools use the Brigance to measure progress,

and frequent testing doesn't affect reliability or validity on testing results.

The only problem I have run into is when they release a new version -- you can't

compare the results of one version to another. You can resolve this by having

the school continue to use the same version, but somewhere down the line you

will have to switch over to the latest test.

The Brigance covers a broad span of grade/age levels. And you should be able to

use the results (weaknesses) to write your child's IEPs.

Good suggestion Barb,

I am not familiar with the Brigance reading test, but I used the Brigance

math test at the beginning of every year on all of my middle school students

when

I was teaching. It was quick and gave a snapshot view of the operational

grade level of each student. If any problem missed was below grade level, I

could then give a few more checkup problems of the same type to see if it was a

careless mistake or a true problem area. I liked the fact that the math test

scores the child as to functional grade level, and that I was able to recommend

tutoring in specific areas of weakness to the parents.

Does the Brigance Reading test operate the same way?

I'm not a teacher and I have never actually seen the test, but it appears to

work the same way -- judging from the results that I have seen (data that the

school has shown me from the testing).

I am always careful to have the teachers specify which version they used for the

testing (Blue, Green, Green Revised) to mark on my copies so when we review at

ARDs in later years, we can have a better idea of actual progress and what we

are comparing. I remember one year they went through 2 changes.

The Brigance has a variety of tests in different areas, not all are academic.

Some measure life skills.

Bonnie,

Better at work than home, for sure! I had the foresight, 24, almost 25 years

ago, to give birth to a puter head...LOL My son is my own personal help

tech. His Dad too, so if I can't get one, I can usually get the other.

I hear ya GF, on the well timed breaths! Seems this past week, I've put them

to good use, myself!

Kiki -- the crash was at work, and believe me, I panicked when a screen came up

saying my C drive was being scrubbed of data....

However, I called our IT guys (I'm a tech writer, not a computer guru!) --

they've had to re-install a few of my programs, but as I typically do my work on

the system rather than my hard-drive, I didn't lose anything important.

So, other than losing a few personal links, I seem to be okay. Sure hope this

DOESN'T happen at home (actually, my husband is a developer, he can keep the

machine running far better than I -- but he's not an IT person!).

Found out that a few well-timed LL breaths helped yesterday -- at least I didn't

get totally hysterical!!!! (LOL!)

I got your 'test' Bonnie. Sorry to hear about your 'crash'. Hope you get it

all straightened out...

Yes,over the years I've done several sweat tests with Biolab and thought it was a great idea. However I've heard recently that it's not very accurate, so, until I know differently, I personally will stick to blood.

Re: Testing

This is what Biolab wrote me - anybody had one of these?

Thank you for the additional details. Many laboratories only measure red cell minerals, or in some cases only serum minerals, because they do not have the in-house expertise to offer a wider range of mineral tests. However, Biolab was set up specifically to provide the best tests of nutritional status.

If you can bring your son to Biolab we could do a sweat metal profile which includes minerals and toxic metals. I have attached a general information leaflet about Biolab which provides further details about this. Alternatively, we could do a serum mineral screen with a red cell magnesium, for which a test kit is available on request. For either of these tests your son should not take any mineral containing nutritional supplements on the day of the tests.

As far as I know you can only get the RBC mins from DDI or MM and need a doctor on board to get the kit sent to you as need a practitioners referral. We are following the min testing protocol but it still means 7 tubes of blood - anyone any suggestions how to get this amount from a normally compliant 8 year old who freaks as soon as a needle is in sight - I think our only way forward is some form of sedative - any suggestions???

LOL Deanna! We are here, but November is typically a quiet month for

our list. Lots of folks are doing shows and getting ready for the

holidays. I've actually been updating my website, making cp soap, and

filling orders. Yay! That's always a good thing. :)

I'm also trying to decide what the menu will be for Thanksgiving. I

get tired of the same old turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, squash,

gravy, etc. My brother & girlfriend are coming for dinner. He bought

us an early Christmas gift, a turkey fryer. So at least the taste of

the turkey will be different this year!

I hope all are well & that your shows are doing better as the holidays

come closer!
