Hi...my son is 12 and from the time he was 10 I began to see changes. I am quite sure his are due to hormones and the prelude/onset of puberty. He also became more emotional and angry and mouthy...much more touchy. We tried a trial of Strattera for attention and it also helped with his moods and very mild aggression. He is doing great now on a moderate dose and is succeeding in his LD classes at school. (All b's this report card). I would suggest talking to your pediatrician and if you also work with a psychologist getting their opinion on whether medications might be helpful.

Another thing to watch for is any indication of seizure activity as the early teen years seem to trigger seizures. I would watch the tics and get a Dr's opinion.

I dreaded this time of life as I knew changes might come, and they have, but with the meds things have improved greatly. It isn't unusual to try meds when kids hit this age, but it is tricky as people with autism don't always respond as "typicals" do to medications and they can backfire, have an opposite effect, or little effect/none...so be careful and do it with help from a Dr. You might want to try having him write out what happens/draw a picture/tell a story to see if it helps draw him out-even see if he might try recording his voice on a tape recorder or make a little movie with a video camera if he is a ham like my son is:) Good luck,

Sincerely, Sally

Carol, I just have to address your hormone question with a response that

question is soooo hard for those of us with children entering puberty. I am

also on a bipolar parent list and it is equally hard there to know the

difference. I shudder at the thought that Evan is so low functioning and

yet to reach puberty.

Another thought was that you mentioned your son is PDD, ADHD, OCD and I

wondered if Bipolar might be in there somewhere. Sometimes the symptoms for

those diagnoses are very similar. One psychologist told me not to worry

though about the dx as long as the behavior was treated.

BETTY ANN-61 yo, possibly Bipolar but undx'd,

Effexor, Buspar, Lorazepam as needed, Lithium orotate

grandma and guardian to

ANDREW - 12 yo-- Bipolar/ADHD, Homeschooled

Depakote 250 mg., Adderall 30 mg, Abilify 20 mg, Zoloft 50 mg,

EVAN - 9 yo-- nonverbal autism

Abilify 20 mg 1x daily, 25 mg Trazodone, Risperdal as needed

DAVID 7 yo Bipolar/ADHD

Adderall 20 mg daily, 1 mg Risperdal 3 x daily,

50 mg Strattera

Hi Carol, no problem. If my son misses a dose, he gets very emotional(cries especially)...so it is important to get it just right and not miss a dose of Strattera. I can really see how it helps even his emotions out...:)Good luck with whatever you do...Sally

Hi Carol -

My daughter turns 9 next month and is exhibiting A LOT (well, all actually) of the behaviors you mention.

It's getting very difficult for us as from day to day I don't know who/what I will be dealing with.

We recently had a psych evaluation done, and our next step is a trip to our pediatrician to decide whether or not to medicate.

I'm thinking on the lines of zoloft because we have a LOT of anxiety, frustration, outbursts, sudden mood changes, etc.

I'll keep the list updated as we go forward.

We're all in this together..

I have a 12 year old son with PDD, ADHD, OCD and occasional transient tic disorder.I am looking forward to reading your posts and learning some coping skills for myself and my son. Some days are harder than others as I'm sure you are all aware. I keep thinking it will get easier, but now that he is getting older, it seems that the problems are more out of control. My concern right now is not knowing if his new actions are part of of the PDD, part of just growing up and hormones taking over or if the middle school environment he is in is causing his outbursts and uncontrollable emotions. He has gotten more mouthy and angry. He will be angry one minute, crying the next. He has had many different tics lately and I can't figure out what is causing them. Usually it means he is nervous about something. He doesn't tell me much. Anything that happens at school or out of my line of vision has to be drug out of him. I have to ask specific questions and still just get yes and no answers most of the time. Or, "fine" is his favorite answer for most everything. If anyone can address the normal hormonal changes versus the PDD, I would appreciate it.Carol

I would ask for evaluation for adaptive PE...if he qualifies he might get in a smaller class. You could also check and see if he could do some other type of activity(even one outside of school like gymnastics or swimming)and see if he can get credit at school for it. Also check into rearranging his schedule to see if he could switch the time of day...just a thought. Sally

Have you tried earplugs? There are ones (expensive) that musicians use that cut down the amount of sound. PE is probably harder due to the echoes in a gym too...poor kiddo! Take care, Sally

Hi,

a lot of kids with autism need help with things involving coordination. Since your son has difficulty with the sound and possibly following a series of directions, you could ask for it based on his processing problems. If they would work on breaking down skills so combining them became easier for him, it might help him with the processing issues...just a thought...Sally

Hi Carol, no problem...also you might see if he could be paired with another child who is helpful and willing to assist him on an as-needed basis. My son often has classmates on their own give him hints that help him through the day:) just a thought....Sally-you could also ask the gym teacher to spend a little time with everyone doing drills and allow him more time to develop individual skills. Some schools have a program called "Project Support" that teams teens with other kids their age or younger to help them in situations like this and just be a friend. Maybe you could see if some student(maybe a high school athlete)would be willing to be a "gym buddy" for your son as a volunteer project(maybe they could get some extra credit from a teacher too:) My sons school had an inschool bigbrothers/big sisters program that had kids a couple years older paired with at risk and disabled kids both to encourage them and do activities...my son loved it and his partner worked well with him. They had teachers supervising the program and did one or two activities outside school with lots of supervision. It was great for him. Sally

I pre-ordered this one through Deep Discount DVD. I think it ships in

August/Sept. It was pretty cheap so I thought I'd give it a try -- I'm not

a real belly dancing kind of person...but who knows...

I'll let you guys know once I get it and try it!

There a few things really i need to ask if it normal for my son to do these things. He constantly chews the sleeves of his school jumpers, but nothing else unless he is really anxious about something. His bedroom always looks as though a bomb has been dropped in there lol. These things are quite normal around here lol! My son is 11 AS & ADHD

Hello

Everyone

Hello All,

Thought i'd better introduce myself to the group,

i have a 8 yr old

boy BJ who was eventually diagnosed at7half with

semantic pragmatic

disorder and mild aspergers after i paid privately

to see a

consultant who specialised in asd. This was all

due to the fact the

NHS refused to LABEL him.

At the moment he is going through collecting shiny

metal objects even

if they dont belong to him. Has anyone got any

suggestions in helping

him understand if he keeps stealing he will

eventually go to prison.

He does know right from wrong but he still CANNOT

see the

consequences of his actions. I ave tried getting a

policeman to talk

to him but he is still doing it.

***********Welcome, my

son has never done this but I guess reminding him over and over and possibly

drawing it out on paper might help. If he takes something I would say “this

is very nice but it does not belong to us and we will have to return it to its’ owner.” I have always used the we more than you. I’m not sure why I did this but it

always seemed to work. That way one is not as accusing I guess, it becomes more

of a lesson for everyone.

There a few things really i need to ask if it

normal for my son to do

these things. He constantly chews the sleeves of his school jumpers,

but nothing else unless he is really anxious about

something. His

bedroom always looks as though a bomb has been dropped in there lol.

***************Yes this

is common. The chewing is a sensory issue. I chew on a neck scarf and my

pajamas and I am 49. I’m not nervous I really don’t know why I do

this. My son drops clothes anywhere and sticks trash behind things. I just keep

reminding where the items are supposed to go. He is 12. He used to stuff

everything going under the couch cushions. He has stopped this but finds other

places….

And at the moment my partner and myself have a

meeting 2moro with his

speech therapist, paeditrician, senco teacher and form teacher. Due

to the fact his speech therapist doesn't agree semantic pragmatic is

a disorder and after seeing him for an hour he

hasn't got aspergers

syndrome.

***********Good luck, Gail

Greetings :) New guy on the block here

I had read that yeast could cause chewing and sucking. Is your son

undergoing any yeast treatments?

Hi new Guy

My son isnt undergoing any tests at present. But he was referred to Great

Ormand Street, London yesterday. I had got a diagnosis of semantic pragmatic

disorder and mild aspergers by paying privately but there is alot of

conflicting evidence so they say. so have referred him to there now, so all

being well they will sort it once and for all. But im convinced he got the

right diagnosis, this is all due t 1 speech therapist in the new area where

we moved to saying there nothing wrong with him.

so all being well they will do all the tests recessary.

Welcome and while I am sad you have a family member with an autistic

child, I am so happy you have chose not to vax. DO NOT let your doctor bully

you, dont go back there except to get a copy of your records! Find someone

that will accept/support your beliefs.

Welcome- you will love this list.

HI ..If you do vaccinate make sure you use only thimerosal-free,

single-dose vaccines. Tim

Hello everyone

Hello everyone,

I'm new here! My wife and I had our first child 2 months ago. We have denied

the vaccinations so far only because of a family member who is dealing with

autism with their 3 year old. Like a lot of the other stories out there,

they noticed something different about their baby after his first shots. The

first thing the doctor did was stop giving vaccinations. This is what

alarmed them and now me! Our doctor is trying to force us into the shots

saying, " I'm the one who's going to get a call in the middle of the night

that something's wrong " and " we had a baby die of whooping cough because the

parents refused vaccination " it did scare us at first but when I got home, I

found so many things online and so many different families with similar

stories of doctors bullying parents. Now I need to figure out the alternate

route. If anyone on this list knows of a good doctor in Orange County, CA I

would greatly appreciate it. I kind of doubt we'll be with ours much longer.

" Tyler is going back in a cast July 13th. "

Hi Tawney!

It was great seeing you and Tyler again! We are scheduled to get

Eliana's third cast on Aug. 25th......so unfortunately we wont see

you but were hoping everything goes well, and its an easy adjustment

for him. Eliana will be in this cast 14 weeks by the time its

replaced, does that seem a little long to you? Maybe not, I cant

seem to remember how long the average is, but her last was only on

for six weeks and with her growth, it was already really tight.

Hmmmmmmm,

well anyway, it was so nice catching up, and hopefully we can again

soon!

Take care girl!

Hugs to your two little men.

Hi Tawney

It was great to meet up again! Siobhan is going into another series

of

casts in August, as the brace is not really supporting her spine the

way the casts do.

Great news for Tyler though! All your hard work is really going to

pay

off!

Hope to see you all again soon.... (And say Hi to Tony from me!!!)
