Micheal,

Your post about oil companies sponsering applicants caught my eye. I'm a

month away from the end of my sentance, er, contract out in the sandbox and am

very interested in living in Scotland and working on a North Sea rig. Can you

tell me some of the companies that are amenable to sponsorship? I've written to

a few, but haven't even received a " thanks, but go jump off a cliff " in reply.

Any info you can get to me would be great, please don't make me go back to

Atlanta!

Hi ,

you will find it virtually impossible to get sponsorship from any company (to

the best of my knowledge), I think you are in the same boat as many other

medics, you will first of all have to do the course, get your survival cert,

have your medical, all paid for by yourself, including food and accommodation,

get your cv out and wait. You may be lucky and get a fill in post fairly soon

after, but you may also have to wait.

I know the HR dept in our company won't even look at you without the right UK

recognised qualifications.

Good luck,

Tony

1st make sure that your qualifications are adequate to attend the

Offshore medics course as if not it does not matter if you find a company

willing to help you out, you should contact Medicos Beverley 01482 320243

(0044 1482 320243 from us based phone system) & ask. Contact drilling

companies such as KCA, Transocean, Smedvig, etc & see if they can help.

There is a publication that can help if you look on the internet for the

Pegasus book that lists a lot of Oil & gas companies & all their support

companies

Good Luck

Thanks for all the great advise i recived from the

members. I will start costing the appriot courses i

need. Then try and get the time off from duties.

Following getting the qualifications how long does it

take to get a job working on the rigs and a few people

mention locum medics will this be regualar work? Which

company do i need to contact to get on there books?

Thankyou all again for the advise look forward to

meeting some of you in the north sea and beyond.

Hi Dave,

Welcome. Your first step to getting offshore, is

gaining the necessary

qualifications. You will need at the very least, a

survival ticket and

an offshore medics certificate. I am afraid you will

have to self fund,

although you should get help through your EVT's. It

is very, very

unusual for anyone to secure a job with a company who

will then fund

them through the courses. Once you are in the door

with a company, they

will then fund your refreshers etc. Most people who

start in the

industry have to do the locum bit, to get the

experience and their face

known around the bazaars. A job then usually pops up

anytime after

about three years. It used to be a case of the old

catch 22 situation,

where companies wanted medics with experience, but you

coldn't get the

experience without them giving you a chance. At the

moment however, the

North Sea is so desperately short of locum medics,

that it is not a

problem getting the first trip in.

Companies who do medics courses in the UK are: Capita

(BP's preferred

trainer - they will always use a Capita trained medic

unless they are

stuck) in Montrose, Interdive in Plymouth, I believe

Ex- Med in Hereford

are now running them, the guys from there use this

site, so they will be

able to confrim. I think NorthSea Medical Centre also

run them in Gt

Yarmouth. You will have to find out from your

resettlement officer who

are accredited for getting the money for your EVT's.

RGIT Montrose in

Aberdeen run survival courses and I think there are a

few others around

the country, but I am not sure who they are.

I am sure your Qualifications would be more tha enought to get you on a

course no worries, However I am not sure if there are nationality issues i.e

do you need a work visa to work in the North Sea and live in the UK.

Perhaps some of the other medics out in the North Sea can help?

Hi Dave,

a website I reccommend to anyone thinking about going offshore is

www.cleddau.com/rigs it is written by an ex squaddie, it has loads of good info

and contact addresses. If you want to contact me offline I will give you as many

addresses as I can to get you going.

You will also find that when you do your course the medics on there can give you

loads of tips.

Its pretty daunting to start with but I am sure the other members of the site

will help you get work.

Good luck

cheers

Tina,

Yes, I'll say a prayer for you and others who need the support. I 'know' I can't do it so I have to ask God to do it and then trust him. Now I guess I should introduce myself.

I'm Dianna from Idaho. I weighed 286 this summer at my highest ..ugh and I'm only 5'1 " ... round as a big fat butterball turkey and I swear about as dumb as one when it comes to controlling what I eat! Oh, I KNOW very well what I should be eating, I just don't. So, this summer I had my left knee replaced. The anesthesia messed up my appetite (hallelujah) and for a time this summer I couldn't stand sweets nor ate very much. Thanks to that I lost 30 lbs which shocked the heck out of me. Of course, slowly but surely I started eating these fabulous cinnamon rolls when we were camping up in the mountains at this wonderful resort town. It doesn't take much to get back that old sweet tooth. I was so stupid. I should have just not started eating like that again. So now, I've gained back about 20 of those pounds. I'll have to weigh myself in the morning to be more exact. So I joined this group hoping I could get motivated to start all over.

So Tina, you encourage me and I'll encourage you and together we'll travel down the road to better health and slimmer bodies. Meanwhile, let's figure out why we sabotage ourselves like we do. ok?

Oh, for a little more about me. I just turned 58. I'm married to a wonderful supportive man (who does 99% of the cooking) and unfortunately loves to bake and fix me goodies. Then he's disappointed if I don't eat them. Help?? My four kids are all adults and married with children of their own. I have 19 grandchildren, most of which are too far away to spoil them. Darn!

Are there any other Idahoans on the group? I work part-time at Boise State University as a tutor coordinator. I also work part-time as a wholesale rep for about 20 scrapbook companies. Now that's my fun job and the one that supports my addiction to paper. Any other scrappers on here?

I don't suffer from insanity. I enjoy every moment! Dianna

Welcome, Dianna, and any other new member I may have missed.

> The anesthesia messed up my appetite (hallelujah) and for a time

Wow! Weird after-effect!

How are you doing with your post-op physical therapy? Still going, or have

you already been told what exercises to do on your own and were discharged?

> So I joined this group

hoping I could get motivated to start all over.

Great bunch of gals here! Just ignore *me* when I start to whine and moan,

okay?

> Oh, for a little more about me. I just turned 58.

Ah, another one older than myself (Just turned 52 a week ago). There aren't

too many in our age range here, mostly younger gals.

> I'm married to a

wonderful supportive man (who does 99% of the cooking)

Lucky stiff! Mine knows how to boil water to make hot dogs or pasta, and

that's about it.

> and unfortunately

loves to bake and fix me goodies. Then he's disappointed if I don't eat

them. Help??

Have him learn to use whole grain flours and/or sugar substitutes. He can

probably make a great and healthy batch of muffins using whole wheat pastry

flour and natural sweeteners, like apple juice concentrate or agave nectar.

If you don't mind artificial sweeteners, lots of people swear on the Splenda

in the bag labeled especially for baking.

>My four kids are all adults and married with children of their

own.

I only have 1, and he's almost 22, in college, and lives at home.

> I have 19 grandchildren, most of which are too far away to spoil them.

You must be a busy lady! My stepmom just moved from the house she shared

with my dad (he died this April) to Ohio to live with her daughter. Finally,

after living 1200 miles away from all the grand-children, she's now going to

just across the hall from a 2-year old boy and a due-any-day-now girl. She's

in heaven!

>I also work part-time as a wholesale rep

for about 20 scrapbook companies.

Hence the nickname Scraper Gal. :)

> I don't suffer from insanity. I enjoy every moment!

Hey! I think I used that tagline myself a few times in the past! Well, close

to it. :)

Welcome to the group ! I have a big sweet tooth myself - I can eat a whole package of Snickers bars without blnking! Now I try to satisfy my sweet tooth with fruit - and it works pretty well actually. Not to say I never have a Snickers - I do about once a month. But I no longer buy a package or even the King Size, I just buy one regular sized one and savor every bite. We have to remeber that we aren't denied ANYTHING - at least not on any diet plan that we can live with all our lives. It's all things in moderation.

Tina,

I was were you are now at the end of the summer. The motivation is different for everyone. You just have to make up your mind that you are going to do it and do it one day at a time and in small steps. I would try to get your eating under control first then work in the exercise once you feel more in control. You can do it!!!

Hello everyone sorry I havent posted much here lately. I havent been doing well. Diet and exercise have been non exsistant. I have been eating like a mad woman and for what reason??? I have no clue. I stepped on the scale the other day and Im so ashamed of myself. Im at my all time highest right now. The beginning of September I was down to 312 pounds. Well when I stepped on the scale I was up to 330 pounds. Right now I hate myself. Please say a prayer that I will get back on track. I need all the support right now.

Tina,

Yes, I'll say a prayer for you and others who need the support. I 'know' I can't do it so I have to ask God to do it and then trust him. Now I guess I should introduce myself.

I'm Dianna from Idaho. I weighed 286 this summer at my highest ..ugh and I'm only 5'1" ... round as a big fat butterball turkey and I swear about as dumb as one when it comes to controlling what I eat!

Dianna

Tina,

We can do this - my all time high was 330 - got

daown to 265 - but then this year I got up 322 -

dang, really thought I was out of the 3's

forever. I started back last month and am down to

309. I haven't did any real workouts since I'm

doing PT, but I have been doing a modified situp

and drinking plenty of water

I've got some Blanks beginners videos that I wouldn't mind parting with. Just didn't get into them. Let me know if you are interested.

Great Tina!! Sounds like you are off to a fantastic new begining!!

>

> Hello everyone. Just wanted to touch base with everyone and see how

everyone is doing. Im doing ok. Could be doing a lot better with the

eating and exercise but that hasn't changed that much. But the one

thing that has changed is that when I get hungry at night I have been

grabbin and apple or some kind of fruit. So that's good. Im looking

for Blanks beginners Tae Bo cuz I want to start working out, but

I would feel more comfortable for the time being doing it at home. We

have a gym here and Im a member of it but where my back hurts all the

time I want to start off slow and steady and work my way back to where

I was before I got off track. I was doing 20 minutes on the bike, 20

on the treadmill and 30 on the cross trainer. I want to work my way

back up to that. I felt really good about myself at that time. Im

hoping to get back to feeling good about myself again. Well its 4:21am

eastern time and Im going to go to bed. I will talk to yall tomorrow.
