Guest guest
Dr. Grim, Weight has nothing to do with it. It started when I suddenly gained 17 lbs in 33 days. I tried telling doctors that they were firey red on the bottom when I stand on them for a few minutes and it fels like they are inflamed. One told me I didn't have an inflammation. Later a neurologist insisted it was diabetic neuropathy even though I don't have diabetes. He told me that he couldn't find anything else wrong with me so he assumed it was diabetic neuropathy. He asked me to describe the pain and it was like being interrogated by a DA in a murder trial. He would not let me use the word " inflammation " and said I was using too many big words and he couldn't understand them. My mind immediately started flashing " IDIOT IDIOT IDIOT " . He asked if the pain was always the same and would not let me tell him that they got worse when I took certain drugs, including the favorite drug to treat diabetic neuropathy. I have told the diabetic neuropathy theory to every endo I have seen since then (6) and they all say it is something else but they don't have any ideas what. Also not one of them has suggested that it is my weight. They hurt when I have not been on them for hours. They sometimes start hurting so bad during the night that it wakes me up. When I went for my 1st accupuncture treatment, the accupucturist understood right away and asked if they were hot. I told him they weren't but he felt them and said they were. Later I realized that the reason they don't feel hot to me is that they are numb on the bottom. Many times I have put my hand on them and they are very hot. After the first accu. treatment they are not nearly as hot as they were before. Later a neurologist insisted it was diabetic neuropathy even though I don't have diabetes. He told me that he couldn't find anything else wrong with me so he assumed it was diabetic neuropathy. It has been reported that DM neuropathy (and retinopathy) can preceed the onset of frank diabetes. Have you ever had a GTT? Any FH of DM? Guest guest
Dr. Grim The neurologist had already made up his mind as to the diagnosis of diabetic neuropathy before he asked those questions. If he was trying to understand the nature of the pain, he would have let me answer in my own words. It is very hard for a patient to describe pain to a doctor. Someone needs to invent a way for the doctor to connect his body to the patients so he would know exactly how the pain feels. I did have plantar fasciitis at the same time it started and that is what I thought. While cortisone shots did help the pf, they did not help the pain in the front of my feet. One interesting thing was that when they started hurting, I was taking Procardia. One of the side affects of Proc is paresthesia. I looked that up and it described exactly what I was feeling. After a few more months, my feet started swelling so bad, my shoes wouldn't fit. My Dr put switched me to Zestril and after about 2 or 3 weeks my feet felt completly normal, no pain or numbness. However my bp started going up. It seemed to me that every time my dr increased the dose, my bp went higher. I told him this and he said that we just hadn't gotten to the right dose and he increased it again to 40 mg. About a week later, I went to the ER with bp 235/115 or something like that so he put me back on Procardia. The pain and numbness came back and I have had it ever since even after being off of Proc for 4 years. Because my feet are red and very hot on the bottom the best way I can describe it to a dr is that it feels like an inflammation. When I am on them for too long (which is only about an hour or even less) the balls or my feet swell on the bottom. Neurontin makes them worse. My dr also tried Vicoden and I took 1/2 tab to try it out. At first they felt real good but then after a couple of hours they got much worse and stayed that way for a couple of days. It isn't any particular type of drug, and I have even had that problem with some brands of vitamins. As for the plantar fasciitis, I had problems with it for about 2 1/2 years before my bp started going up, first in one foot and finally got that stopped and then it came back in both feet. I tried orthotics but they made it much worse. I don't remember when I got rid of it, but I wonder if magnesium had anything to do with it. Now that I take it twice a day, I don't have any problems. However if I skip it for a day, my heels start to hurt a little bit. After I get back on my reg dose, it goes away. Guest guest
> Classic side effect of CCBs. Dr. Grim, I am given CCB as part of my long term maintenace medications. Are these really that effective in PA? Now that I am off Lasix, my gout episodes are less and far in between. In fact, I had only one gout attack since end of May till now. What are the classic effects of CCBs with PA sufferrers?

What are the classic effects of CCBs with PA sufferrers? Never been well studied. We might expect more edema(swelling of the feet but no one has ever tabulated this information. The most useless drugs are those that block the RAAS which is very suppressed by the aldosterone effect on salt retention. Review my article. May your pressure be low! C.E. Guest guest
Dear Wanda, That amount of potassium by supplementation would be for people who are on diuretics, which deplete potassium. Best of Health! Dr. Saul Pressman Re: The Heart Hi Saul, When you suggest 500 mg. potassium, are suggesting that in supplements or from food? The reason I'm wondering is because I've always heard only 99 mg. potassium is suggested, and was wondering if taking the 500 mg. had any adverse effect. Heard of a woman who put herself in the hospital from taking too much potassium, but didn't hear how much she took. I would assume more people are defficient in at as that seems to be the first thing they do to you when you enter a hospital. Hook you up to a potassium drip. Guest guest
The 99mg limit to daily potassium supplementation was done as a knee jerk reaction by the FDA or some other government agency in much the same way as they withdrew Tryptophan. Instead of sanctioning the company that produced the bad batch, the banned the substance. Same logic as the guy who killed the goose that layed the golden egg to cut it open to find the eggs - in reverse of course. Sorry strange analogy but, somewhere in my mind, it works!!! :-) BTW. Some of the Scandinavian countries had a huge decrease in disease when they allowed the use of potassium based salt to replace sodium based salt. Much more than 99 mg in most peoples diet, I believe. Guest guest
, I have had a lot of trouble with low potassium from time to time,I just got off pred. last November after 7 straight years and I'm sorry to say,it doesn't help with the moon face and edema at least not in my case. I do take a suppliment twice a day now since my last visit to the resort two weeks ago where I received potassium by IV for two days,3 bags.I still have the moon face, which I am now a little grateful for,at least the wrinkles aren't quite as prevalent!lol. Guest guest
Your symptoms are classic for what many have reported here with early and advanced PA. Please try to get all of your blood K results going back as far a you can. You have PA until proven otherwise IMHO. Keep us posted. First you need a PA and PRA with a 24 hr urine for Na, K, aldosterone, cortisol and catecholamines. Clarence E. I thought that perhaps I have hypothyroid in added to my PA.As it turns out my cortisol is rather quite low, meaning 2.1(normal according to the lab is 4.0 - 22.0) - I am currently on 75mgs Aldactone for the past 4 yrs and 1000 vitamind D (for the past yr)the reason I went to the doctor is because  in the past month suddenly been experiencing a lot of exhaustion and fatigue and sudden weight gain. Today I looked at low cortisol symptoms on mayo clinic site that pretty much it appears thats what I have -all of the  following symptoms- which I am pasting from mayo clinic's symptoms for low cortisol :Muscle weakness and fatigue, my muscles are hurting so much, I was blaming it on low K but its not the caseWeight loss and decreased appetite - (except I have gained weight tremendously suddenly from 115 lbs to 123 in just a month)Low blood pressure, even fainting (my bp has been under 120/80 consistently, feeling very tired, exhausted)Salt craving (I have to search my cupboards for salty things or craving bread  which I usually dont eat)Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), my 2 hour test was 89 after drinking the syrup so that not badNausea, diarrhea or vomiting (been feeling nausea off and on)Muscle or joint pains (a lot of it, lots and lots)Irritability - thats me latelyDepression - feeling rather depressed lately off and onAcute adrenal failure (addisonian crisis)Sometimes, however, the signs and symptoms of 's disease may appear suddenly. In acute adrenal failure (addisonian crisis), the signs and symptoms may also include:Pain in your lower back, abdomen or legs - no back pain but some abdomen and leg painSevere vomiting and diarrhea, leading to dehydration NOLow blood pressureLoss of consciousness - NOHigh potassium (hyperkalemia) - My current K is rather higher than its ever been but still within range 4.7 (reference range is 3.5 - 5.3)In fact due to all these symptoms and weight gain I was sure that my thyroid was acting up but according to the lab results my thyroid is quite within normal range - TSH, 2.03(reference range 0.40 - 4.50), Thyroxine Free .9 (reference range 0.8-1.8) surprisingly my cortisol is quite low at 2.1 taken at 8.30 am(normal for this time should be 4.0-22). I thought us PA people usually have higher cortisol!!ACTH is 6 (normal range 6-40), I had to take one Dex pill at 11:00 pm the night before taking the blood test No adrenalectomy as I've been diagnosed with hyperplasia.I am yet to see my endo next week to discuss the lab result.Does anyone else have same kind of symptoms and PA all together? this is my first experience with it after taking Aldactone for the past 4 years. could this mean that one of my adrenal glands may be failing or not functioning? I appreciate any suggestions.Thank You,Farah
