Guest guest
Well, the short answer is: It's normal and you're probably not doing anything wrong. :-) Feeling a little bigger in the first week or two is a VERY common phenomenon. It should turn around quickly though, and you'll start to see drops in both pounds and inches. Here's an old post on the subject. It was from someone who's leg measurements went up at first. Maybe it will shed some light. ~~~ Keep training your legs. It's a major calorie burn. If you're feeling big and bulky, the problem isn't your new lean muscle, it's the old familiar fat that's still covering it. It's easy to gain some muscle in the beginning. Once the fat loss catches up, you'll have some sleek, rock hard, jiggle free legs that are smaller than what you started with. Witness the fat and muscle comparison photo: http://skwigg.tripod.com/fat_and_muscle.jpg Quite a few women never get there though. They gain an inch in their thighs the first couple weeks of training, wig out, and go back to being flabby and soft. If they'd stuck it out for 12 weeks, they'd have found that the fat loss catches up and their legs start looking amazing! It's not unusual for the measurements in your arms, legs, and hips to go up slightly at first but then drop like rocks. At the end of a 12 week transformation you'll be inches smaller all the way around. Most people don't stick it out though. The " I'm getting bulky " phenomenon is an excellent excuse to quit and go back to something safely ineffective. Double check your meals, your portion sizes, and free day, and make sure you're creating a substantial calorie deficit every week. You have to have a calorie deficit in order to strip the fat off. If you're training your guts out but you've increased your calories to meet the demands, it's possible that you're accidentally doing a " bulking " phase. That's all about your diet though. If you're near your ideal weight, the ballpark estimates are that your calories should be 8-10 times your body weight for fat loss, 12 times your body weight for fat loss with some muscle gain, and 15 times body weight for muscle gain only. Here's the BFL calculator: http://www.bodyforlife.com/exercise/calcalc.asp Remember, those numbers are only going to be close if you're already near your ideal weight. Anybody more than 20-30 pounds over might want to enter a goal weight instead of your current weight. Guest guest
Do a search for New York Vaccine Information Center. They can help and have monthly meetings. i believe you can claim religious exemption and you will have to ask school for exemption form or acquire one through their county's health dept. Don't give more info than required. I don't know what ASD is but possibly a medical exemption could apply and that requires doc's signature. I am in Ohio but my 18 yo dd is attending a 4 week workshop in NY and hoping to continue in their 2 year program so I am looking into this. Guest guest
I think you should call your doctor and have her evaluated. Whether it is OCD or true depression, the doctor should know. I would imagine that whatever the school would do or whomever they call will defer to your licensed psychiatric caregiver. They may or may not want some kind of doctor's note. Sorry that you are having a bad time right now. Guest guest
I totally agree - bring in the doctor! Also, when our son spoke to one of his friends on the phone just last friday about wanting to hurt himself his friend called the police (it was 1am). When he said the same thing to the police (calmly and politely) it triggered their protocol to take him into custody until evaluated by a qualified psychiatrist (Dad went with and they were very kind). But, there was no other option left to police when he said it to them. Definitely talk to the doctor - and do it soon - and perhaps follow up with the school so they know it's under your control. Guest guest
, For many individuals with asperger's, it is very difficult for them to control their impulses. Trying to counsel them about not doing it often does not carry over into the moment, because they have difficulty reminding themselves. They can have self-control, but it usually takes visual cues right in front of them and on the spot interruption by the teacher. For example I had a child who had a picture sequence taped to his desk. It was something like a picture for raising hand, one of teacher saying it is ok, and than one of him asking the question. The teacher made a class rule, " must raise hand and wait for teacher's ok before asking questions " . Aspies usually respond well to clear rules. The teacher would immediately interrupt any student who would beginning talking without raising his/her hand, and remind them of the rule. The teacher " never responded " to the question without the hand being raised first. Usually if there are very tight boundaries, with consistant follow through, than the child learns quickly. However, teachers often let things slide and than the child has no self-control. I also had a child who asked way too many questions. The teacher used the same technique but also hand a limit on how many questions the child could ask. I think it was four. The child had a small chart of four hands on it, representing questions. After each question the child cross off one of the hands. When they were all crossed off, he had reached his limit. Guest guest
Hi , >>Lately, he has told me that he notices that some of the students are >>making " sighs, " when he asks things. He said that sometimes he will ask >>one or two questions and others might ask the same amount, but the sigh >>sound comes from certain people only when he asks or makes a comment in >>class.<< This is not your son's problem, this is a problem with those other students and the teacher should be coming down on them hard. They have got to learn to tolerate others' differences. Your son has a different brain structure and function and cannot help the way he is. They can help the way they are responding to him and should. in England
Guest guest
Hi Juls & welcome to our group! Since the s are about to start, and I'm not home at the moment to watch it, I'll be the first of many you are going to hear from. You will find this to be a very lively, very supportive group, one that shares many of the same opinions, and yet (and this is a good thing), will not be afraid to voice contrary opinions. There is only one question that you asked, but I want to make a comment first. What are you thinking about with the botox? Save it for your forehead! You are just upsetting your esophagus more by the tiny amounts of time you are buying to put off the surgery! You have to just leave it alone and address the issue that needs taking care of. Its a debatable point whether or not botox might have a negative effect on future surgeries. There are others on this board who have had multiple surgeries. You're going to hear from , one of the nicest guys around (at least until he returns to the U.S. from England). However, I can tell you that you are not going to get a surgeon or anyone else for that matter who is going to give you some kind of warranty on your operation, whether its going to be the last time, or you are going to need another one. What is most important is that if you have already gotten a second opinion that you must have the surgery, that you have it done by the best surgeon out there. (Please take as much time as you need to explore the " files, " " links, " and " databases " located on the left hand side of this window. There is more information to be had there, than perhaps any doctor could provide you. You just don't know if there will be another surgery (after this), but the quality of the surgeon might be an indicator if you will need another one or not. As you said, your stay in the hospital was not the norm for this operation, and you were wise to point that out to others thinking about having it done. I am curious, as will be others, how old you are, where you had the surgery performed, and who did it? As to the chest pain. If you reviewed the posts over the last 2 months, or clicked on some of the information files, you will see that members here all have their ways of dealing with the pain. Some much more successfully than others. Since you are in such a state, what I do bears repeating. As soon as you sense that the pain is going to begin, you must take action. That is pretty much universal. Once you are in the grip of it, it becomes much harder to get rid of. There are the " home grown " methods. I drink Diet Coke (or any carbonated beverage ASAP), but sometimes, just eating a cracker can stop it. Others drink water of varying temperatures. On a more medical level, I put a nifedipine capsule (also known as Procardia) under my tongue, let it dissolve, then crunch it with my teeth to empty out. Usually within 3 minutes the pain is gone and does not repeat until the next time (hours, days, or weeks later). Now, don't get me wrong. Just because I can get rid of it so easily, does not lessen the impact of what it would be like if I did not have the means of dealing with it. The rare times that I have forgotten to have my nifedipine with me, and not near anything to drink, the pains have been so intense it felt like my chest would explode, or like I was having a heart atttack (though I knew I wasn't). Juls, I am also curious about the knowledge of your gastroenterologist, in that you are suffering so much chest pain from the esophageal spasms, and yet he did not make any suggestions to you as to how to handle it? Did you ask him (her) about it? I hope that you are not offended by the directness of some of my questions, but when you are not face to face, you just try the best you can to get to the answers, and perhaps if there is something along the way that just does not sound right. Everyone on this board is here to help you (especially if the s get boring, though I'm rooting for Jon to bring the house down!). So, please check out the references I gave you, and check back here for others to also respond (and stay off the botox). > > Hi everyone, > > I am a new member and amazed and excited to see there are others > going through the same things l do (not that l wish this condition > on anyone, but there is worse). > A little into my background, l was diagnosed over 10 years ago. > Finding it was getting worse l underwent 2 dilatations, with no > change. Guest guest
Juls, welcome to the group. Sorry to hear that you have such a difficult time with your first surgery. I would suggest you fine a specialist and go and have a consult with them if you have not already. I had a second surgery last May and I am really glad I did it. I also was having a lot of pain when I would eat and drink. I also got to the point again where I could not get water down. After having my second surgery I no longer have pain when I eat and I have not had any trouble eating anything I want. I hope this helps you out a little. If you would like to talk more you are very welcome to e-mail me privately. Where do you live? Again welcome to the group and our little family. I hope you can get some relief soon. in Suffolk
Guest guest
Hi Juls, Welcome! I remember when I found this group, I was ecstatic. After all I had been through then having to have a THIRD surgery. The group that was here then nursed me through that surgery. That was in 2000. WOW sounds like you have had a tough time!! I can see where you would do just about anything to avoid another operation. My history is in the files but I wil give you the short version. I am sure I started having problems at 11 or 12 but I was not correctly diagnosised until I was 17. I had a Heller myotomy with no complications Praise God! I went about 15 years before I had a wrap. I had chronic infections, bronchitis, pnuemonia ect during that time. The answer was supposedly the wrap. The wrap lasted about 9 years, then I started having problems again and after a couple attempts at dilation doctors decided the wrap was too tight and a take down of the wrap was the best deal. I put that off for a year! That makes 3 open chest surgeries. I told the doctors they better get it right cuz we are NEVER doing another surgery. All 3 surgeries were open, 2 of them through the front of my chest. I did have complications because they damaged the diaphram. I spent a week on a ventilator in ICU, then 3 weeks in the hospital trying to get back to breathing on my own. I don't know if it is the fact that they damamged the diaphram or that they have done so many surgeries that I have no real muscle strength in my chest, but I have very few spasms these days. I know what brings them on and I avoid those things!! There is no way I will lift over 10 pounds cuz that will put me out for a few hours! In my earlier days, I had several spasms so bad, I was taken to the Emergency Room because people thought I was having a heart attack. If a spasm is really bad, and I can't stop it (which has happened a few times) I know I can get into the ER quick by telling them I am having chest pains.. :-) My answer to spasms has been to take a couple of uncoated Tylenol and put them under my tongue. Then drink lots of water. That's not for everyone, but it works for me...LOL. Maybe others have some additional ideas. I don't know what your questions are, but feel free to ask away. I do understand your hesitation at another surgery for sure!!
