Thanks to everyone who replied back. I'm thinking that my hair loss is

probably a severe allergic reaction. I'm now looking into NAET &

Bioset, but with the holidays lots of practitioners are unavailable to

answer my questions. At this point, I'm leaning towards Bioset.

Hair loss in women can be caused by:

Iron deficiency, hypothyroidism, hypoadrenal, fungal infection of scalp,

iron deficiency, S.L.E., essential fatty acid deficiency, excess vitamin

A, high copper, zinc deficiency, excess androgens in females, estrogen

dominance in females, testosterone deficiency in females, low B12 and

parasites.

Defnitely get your iron levels checked! Some additional EFA's like fish

oil or falx oil might be beneficial.

Has your son's thyroid been tested. We are also with Dr. G. and although my

son does not have this problem I do. I have a auto immune disorder call

Hoshemotos with Hypothyroid. When my thyroid is acting up I lose hair.

Because

of my condition Dr. G runs a thyroid test regularly on my son.

Good Luck

Hi Becky,

You are correct, autoimmune disease can and often does cause hair loss. There

is usually no definite pattern as to how the hair is lost. Dr. G has no clue?

I'm curious whether he has run a thyroid panel since the hair loss.

hi all-

forgive the typing, i have a baby in one arm right now--

my 4.10 yo has been losing the hair on top of his head for about 6 mos.

now, like a male pattern hair loss, the sides and back are fine. we've been

with dr g 2 years now, great progress most days. dr g has no clue and isn't

worried yet, but i did read hair loss can be associated w/autoimmune conditions.

if so, id think hed thin all over his head,tho--????

anyone else have this problem?

My boys go to Dr. G and do not have hair loss, but at

50, I started with a patch in the back of my head.

The dermatologist said it was alopecia and said

nothing could be done about it. Within about 9 mos, I

had 3 or so more patches (some pretty big in the back

of my head), and my hair was thinner all over. Also

the size of the hair itself was thinner, it seems. I

went to another dermatologist 2 weeks ago, and he ran

some tests. The tests show a normal thyroid, but a

very slightly elevated t3. My new internist ordered

more thyroid tests and some other tests, just to cover

all bases. One of these was a lupis panel, he calls

it. I have been washing my hair with a steroid type

shampoo for 2 weeks now and have 4 weeks to go before

I see the dermatologist again. He calls it alopecia

also. How did you find out that you had Hoshemoto?

What tests showed it? I got this about 2 weeks after

I went off the Atkins diet and had lost about 17 lbs.

So, I thought it was from that, but you'd think it

would have stopped by now. I also thought it was

hormonally related or an allergic reaction to color

wash I used on my hair. I'd appreciate what else you

know about it. Thanks. Barb

Yes, we did a thyroid panel a few mos. ago.

All was apparently normal. And, like someone else said, the thinning area

seems to have hair that is very fragile with very little follicle. The rest

of his hair is much stronger and coarser.....

quite bizarre.

Hi Barb,

The best resource for this topic is at the Alopecia Areata Foundation website.

You should find answers to most of your questions there. An important note

made at this site is that although something triggered your white blood cells to

attack and stop or slow the growth of hair it does not mean that this cannot be

reversed, so don't lose hope.

For information about thyroid disease go to About.com and you will find the very

latest news and a great resource for Hashimoto Disease and answers to every

question you could ever have regarding the thyroid and endocrine system.

I hope that this is helpful.

Hi Becky,

Would this be alopecia? One of my sisters has alopecia areata (hair loss over

the entire body), and it is believed to be autoimmune in nature. It can start

in small round circular patches; the patches may grow back in, or they can

expand into larger patches, sometimes affecting the entire scalp. Sometimes the

hair grows back, sometimes it doesn't.

Thought I'd mention it just in case. . .

Actually, I had just the opposite reaction to LDN -- my hair got

healthier, very shiny and alive looking. Not thicker or thinner though.

I was going through major hair loss before LDN due to the lupus sle,

but about 2 weeks into using ldn, I stopped loosing my hair. Now it

is growing back full and at a fast rate that I have had to trim it

every two weeks. I can't tell you what a relief that was!

Sincerely,

Betty

I have severe hair loss for unknown reasons, though they are pretty

sure it is not from meds. In fact, now I'm off prednisone completely,

it has gotten worse! My dermatologist prescribed a cortisone lotion,

which has helped it grow back faster, but it is still missing in

patches. Good luck.

Hi Bonnie:

Hair thinning can be a real pain with the medications

we have to take - for me, I think the Mtx is the main

culprit - causing a lot of thinning along the sides

up top - not pretty - and seeing my hair is fine and

light blonde it is pretty obvious if I am not careful

how I comb it. As if the RA/Fibro were not enough

lol. Anyway, I did try Nioxin shampoo and conditioner

(I got them from my hairdresser) and they did make my

hair appear fuller and in much better condition. I

used them for about 2 months and I now use them about

once a week. The rest of the time I use Dove - the

one for extra volume. I have to say my hair was

pretty dry, limp and did not feel good before the

Nioxin and that really helped, so you might want to

give it a try.

Hi Beth

Have you been tested for Hypothyroidism? My Mom (she's 84) has it and her

first symptom was hair loss. As soon as she started the medication she was fine.

A change in hormones can definitely cause hair loss, that's why a lot of

women lose hair after giving birth. If it is hormone related, once your

hormones stabilize your hair should stop falling out. I had this problem

following my first pregnancy, it took about 6 months for my hair to stop

falling out. Certain drugs can also cause hair loss.

Well I was going to mention that too...and wondered if she'd been

checked for thyroid antibodies.

didn't she also mention some previous mercury toxicity too? so many

hypo folks have had that diagnosis previously - hypos don't excrete

toxins well.

Hi ,

I don't have any startling revelations for you. I too, have had a significant

amount of hair loss. The only things I thought of doing was w

shing my less frequently, using less hair products, and taking biotin.

I still have them in but only for another nine days!

I hope we're not just screwed! I used to have gorgeous hair. Thick like a

horses mane my husband used to say. It was unbelievable because I'm a totally

natural, never been colored blonde. Apparently us blondies are notorious for

having thin locks?

Anyway, I would love for my hair to come back. Maybe someone else can offer us

more hope...

Christene . . . as crazy as it sounds, as long as a

doctor adheres to " accepted medical standards " he/she

is not responsible for the outcome . . .

i.e. thinking for ones self is not encouraged!

Yes, at least for me, hair loss has happened.

There's about an inch missing across most of my front hairline (I try to maneuver a part in the middle of my hair so you can't see it -since bangs make my head hurt worse despite that I used to have them many years ago. LOL) On the sides of my hairline, it's further back, and in one spot it's further than an inch. Overall, I've had a lot of gradual thinning of my hair, but it was so thick to begin with no one acts alarmed about it -because they think I exaggerate. This took a few years to start happening, and has worsened the past couple -which could be related to rather or not I have true Lupus, and also the thyroid diseases.

Doctors would rather tell you hair loss can be hereditary -despite that my dad is in his 60's with a full hairline, as is my mother.

If you're losing your hair, you may want to go to a dermatologist or trichologist (if you are lucky enough to have one in your area) for an analysis before it gets REAL bad!!!
