Welcome to the group.

Please get your son surgery - you will be very sorry if you continue to wait. He doesn't have vertigo, facial paralysis, infections, etc. (yet) - a cholesteatoma will not go away without surgery - they only grow larger and do more damage. I was mortified when I found out that I had a cholesteatoma (never had heard of anything like it) - had surgery (my first surgery ever) - the outcome was much better than I ever anticipated.

Find a great Otologist not a general ENT and take care of it - after all he is a child relying on his parents to take care of him - make the right decision for his future - get the cholesteatoma out.

I know as a mother that you probably would like to protect your child from having surgery (I would feel the same way if it were my child) -however, some things in life can't be ignored we have to face them head on and this is one of them - it is not life threatening if taken care of.

Good luck and take care!

Hi All,11 year old son, suspected C-toma-CT scan 4 years ago clear-surgeon won't do another scan before surgery. mild hearing loss, enlarged vestibular aquaduct-lots of buildup of material in ear-looks like rice cakes! Experimenting with EFA and probiotics-ear seems to rid itself of wax buildup better with lots of EFA's. Hasn't had lots of infections-has huge adenoids and tonsils-retracted drums probably because of blocked eustation tubes. I would like to avoid surgery, at this time, as other than buildup of material in ear and mild hearing loss child is fine-no vertigo, facial paralysis issues, no infections.. .everything I've read over last few months about c-toma surgery is gruesome and outcome has poor quality of life for a young person and forever more. I understand the risks if left untreated but surgeon (great guy-bigwig from over the pond currently at Sick Kids toronto) insists on surgery. (looking for apples one finds apples, no?)

Help! Is "watching and waiting" appropriate? Has anyone tried to discover WHY they build up keratin-perhaps, as I speculate, an essential fatty acid metabolism dysfunction? Are any naturopaths working on this? History of paternal allergies, asthma, arthritis, exzema, smoking, ulcerative colitis-maternal- borderline lupus ANA-is there an autoimmune component to this problem? Any help would be most appreciated! Thank you so much.

My two cents is in agreement with the other people posting. I am an example of what can happen if you don’t have the surgery right away. Here I am 8 surgeries later all because while I was born with cholesteatoma, regular doctors didn’t

see it until I was 20. The majority of my hearing bones were eaten away and I wear hearing aids. I wish it would have been caught sooner so I could potentially hear better and have less damage to the inside of my ear. Take this advice very seriously because

if I had to do it all over again, I would have definitely had the surgery when I was younger. That being said, I am now 41 and completely functioning. I may not be able to swim underwater or ride roller coasters, and I definitely get dizzy pretty easy, but

all of that is acceptable compared to what could happen if my cholesteatoma hadn’t been caught at all. If you’d like to read more about my ups and downs with cholesteatoma, read my blog at lisaceardisease.blogspot.com

GOOD LUCK!

Hi, I do understand your post. I have a son with various rare disorders and

when your child is involved you do look to ensure you are looking at this from

every angle.

Everything I have read - I have one myself and need to have surgery - says that

this should be operated on at the appropriate time. Your consultant WILL tell

you when the appropriate time is. If surgery has been mentioned then I would

accept it and go forward. What you MAY feel more comfortable with, is getting a

second opinion so that you are comfortable that two people agree and if they

both say surgery then I would urge you to accept this and go forwards.

If you look through the posts on this board a number have talked of having to

have patches as the bone has become diseased. This disease can take your

child's life.

If I were you, I would ask why I (me the writer) haven't had surgery. Well I

have just moved to the US from the UK and am waiting for an appt. I am actually

trying to find an alternative person so I can go sooner. I have accepted the

necessity for an operation, and hate the idea - I have a connective tissue

disorder and don't generate bone very well so I don't know if a bone graft will

take, furthermore, my skin is poor to heal so again, this has worries of its

own. I have NO DOUBT however as so the need for the surgery.

If you do find out thinks which will aid slowing / stopping any progression of

the disease then I for one would welcome any information.

hi!  I sympathize with the dog's skin allergies....this is interesting b/c

she is a short hair dog, right?

I have a part Chow part Lab with the long hair.  She suffered terribly for

years with itching,  bit and scratched hersel fdue to itching and her hair fell

out in patches her tummy stayed covered in scabs.  She was miserable We bathed

her frequently with all kinds of medicated stuff, it would help for a day and

the 2nd day the biting would begin again it was terrible..

One day we went to give her a bath we were out of all the medicated stuff so I

washed her in kitchen dish detergent Ajax antibacterial.  We didn't notice that

she quit biting and scratching herself...it was like a few weeks later and ALL

of her hair had grown back in.  I could not believe it I got her down and

looked at her tummy there was not one scab on her.

That's the only thing we use to bathe her...she has not had any further skin

problems.  What i read is that Chows have that deep layer of fur, and it holds

normal bacteria.  She is an indoor dog and we've always bathed her every few

weeks b/c of her skin condition.

BTW i offered her EVCO recently on a spoon, she turned her nose up at it ..i

said AW GO AHEAD you'll like it...she gingerly licked the spoon, you could tell

she liked it..now i give it as a special treat to her and she comes running.

Another funny f is NONE of my 3 dogs will eat Mc's has browns. That says a

lot.   I wouldn't touch those things.

You might try the Ajax antibacterial dish stuff on your dog.  I hope it helps

and i would be interested to know if it does help.

Hi all!

I am new to the forum and have read the past threads about VCO and dogs, but I

still have some questions.

We have a four year old, female, English Bulldog. She has extreme skin allergies

and we just took her off the steroids a couple of weeks ago. When I read that

VCO could be given to dogs, I tried it. I thought it helped, but now I'm not so

sure. I started giving her half a tsp once a day and then yesterday I gave her

a full tsp, but her itching is getting worse.

Am I doing something wrong? Not enough, too much? I was really hoping this

would work for her, I hate having her on the steroids, but what's worse is her

itching.

Thanks for any help,

Debra

i've done holistic animal nutrition for years and may be able to help you.

Thank you for responding. What is the recurrence rate after surgery? What percentage of people are fixed after surgery or is it more than likely an ongoing thing? It seems like from what I read, it is not an easy thing to cure completely. I am so nervous for my 5 year old and scared she will lose her hearing.....

My son started his experience with c'toma at age 4yo, and I was scared to death,

too. Fortunately at such a young age the kids do really well and recover much

faster than you expect. There isn't much pain and only tylenol or motrin is

necessary. A bandage for a few days and then ear drops to dissolve the packing.

Before you know it they are ready to run and play before you want them to. A

second look is " standard procedure " to check for regrowth. Not that you want

more surgery, but it is reassuring to know what the status is in that little

ear. The hardest part is keeping the ear completely dry, esp. in the summer.

Good luck to you and your child. Please let us know the result.

BTW- are you related to the Ziman's in Balto? We live in Owings Mills, MD. I

am happy to help- I know all too well the stress and worry over this!

Hi I am interested in taking the PTCB exam but have not taken any pharmacy

technician courses. I have taken pharmacology, anatomy courses and worked as a

tech few years back. Any suggestions on studying for the exam and the time frame

it would take to prepare myself, thanks.

Welcome Newbie,

TIME to study for PTCB? Much depends upon how much you recall of Trade/generic

names and math and your duties.

But to begin with you need at least two good books to study from and this site.

Any one out there that passed the teest in the last year or two wish to post or

report what books they used and which ones helped them?

In my Files secion in the second folder (see menu to the left of Home Page of

this site) you will find a list of study guides that I like.

I does need to be updated as I think it is a 2009 version.

So people feel free to share to help this and other newbies!~

After you study each chapter and feel comfortable ask or post your specific

questions that you " still " do not understand, here on this site. I will help

you to understand.

There are MANY tutorials on this site. Open EACH one (in file #5) after every

chapter of the same subject to learn more or reinforce what you have learned.

Again post questions that give you a hard time after exhausting your study books

and the tutorials.

Visit other links to other sites especially those with quizzes.

Hope this helps,

I am sure others on this site will have other comments to help you. Best

comments will be from those who passed recently and used specific books. But we

need to know his or her background too! Such as:

" I have not been to college, but have HS or GED "

" Have had one year community college etc "

" HS diploma worked in aerospace for 20 yrs , changing carreers "

" College anatomy and physiology and worked a coupld of years ago as a tech " .

ONLY in this way can we compare apples and oranges to the best of our ability.

What works for one, may not work for another.

I suggest no less than 25 hours per week minimum for about 3-4 months. If you

can spare more time per week fine. But you also need time to absorb and process

the information.

Hope this helps,

Thanks so much I will definitely look into your suggestions. Prior to finding

this site I purchased a book my the name of

to study from plus some info I came across on a notes site.

Dear All,

For many years Tech Lectures offered free online practice exams. I see now that

the following site has them for $9.99 a big difference from $29

I believe the answers are included but if not contact joemedina@...

http://tlectures.com/onlineresource.html

These are some FREE quizzes that I could find on line

12 questions here:

http://www.testprepreview.com/modules/ptcb1.htm

12 more questions here:

http://www.testprepreview.com/modules/ptcb2.htm

10 here with rationale:

http://www.quicktestprep.com/freepreview.html#example2

http://www.medpreps.com/ptcb-practice-tests/sample-test.php

MOST links took me to where you must pay for practice quizzes or

only where you could buy online study materials.

Be wary of dishonest sites that mislead you. Here is an example of being misled:

I googled the following:

FREE Practice PTCB Test

Which gave me several options, the following being one of them:

http://www.pharmacytech-information.com/pharmacy-technician-tests.html

Scrolling down to the bottom I found the following text and link:

These are just sample questions, the actual test is timed and contains over 100

questions in multiple choice format covering all aspects of pharmacy thus giving

you exam familiarity and revealing your weak and strong areas plus your test

taking skills.

Click here to register and attempt a test. (this is the hyperlink)

THAT took me to: http://www.rxlearning.com/PracticeTest.htm

WHICH had the following message:

You are being redirected to the new Rx Learning site.

Please click the link if you are not redirected automatically.

Please bookmark the correct page at http://www.rxlearning.com/PracticeTest.html

WHICH REDIRECTED ME TO a completely different looking screen but with the SAME

link:

http://www.rxlearning.com/PracticeTest.html

WHICH clearly told me on that page:

Try our practice PTCB test for ONLY $19.95 and see for yourself where you stand

based on your score. As soon as you complete the test you will get a chance to

review your incorrect answers.

A photo of the following person: Wolf Phd - Program Director and

President of Rx Learning is displayed on the site.

THEN if you continue to SCROLL to the bottom it says:

WHICH takes you to the following link:

WHICH promptly displays shopping cart for $19.95

for Rx Learning Practice Exam

NOTHING FREE about these practice tests!

There are many good books that have practice PTCB and ExCPT questions in them. I

suggest them over anything you will find on the internet.

However they may be more expensive, but the authors are well respected in their

field, IF they are published by reputable publishers.

Usually if the title of the text book or study guide book has the word PTCB

Certification " REVIEW " in it, it usually has practice exams. The following book

is well known with 4 - 6 such practice exams:

> Be wary of dishonest sites that mislead you. Here is an example of being

misled:

>

> I googled the following:

> FREE Practice PTCB Test

> Which gave me several options, the following being one of them:

> Scrolling down to the bottom I found the following text and link:

> These are just sample questions, the actual test is timed and contains over

100 questions in multiple choice format covering all aspects of pharmacy thus

giving you exam familiarity and revealing your weak and strong areas plus your

test taking skills.

link:

> Try our practice PTCB test for ONLY $19.95 and see for yourself where you

stand based on your score. As soon as you complete the test you will get a

chance to review your incorrect answers.

> A photo of the following person: Wolf Phd - Program Director and

President of Rx Learning is displayed on the site.

> THEN if you continue to SCROLL to the bottom it says:

> ACCESS PRACTICE TEST HERE

> There are many good books that have practice PTCB and ExCPT questions in them.

I suggest them over anything you will find on the internet.

their field, IF they are published by reputable publishers.

> Usually if the title of the text book or study guide book has the word PTCB

Certification " REVIEW " in it, it usually has practice exams. The following book

is well known with 4 - 6 such practice exams:

Hello group

I have just found you. Last Saturday I woke up with bells palsy. Researching it on the web, came across this group. Could my case be related to c-toma? I have ear pain and experienced dizziness for a while especially whe I lie down.

What a week.

Thanks

Zena
