Hi all! Just yesterday I wrote on battery prices, in a comparison of

vendors, on bh News. This compared Rayovac's Cochlear Plus prices among

vendors only, the product chosen at random. Thought some would be of

interest.

BTW, the best deal I've seen on the Zenipower type 675 cochlear cells is @

www.microbattry.com

300 for $84.95, or $.283 per cell.

Hi all at bh News and the CI Forum at York U!

It's been a while since bh News shopped the battery sellers. And today a

" Kate " on the York CI forum, seeking prices on type 675 cells for the CI,

stirred the thrifty Scot here into finding the best deals and the worst.

Assuming that the respective profit formulas are the same across the brand

line, the comparisons thus derived would be of interest to zinc-air cell

users of all types.

I selected, for simplicity of comparison, the Rayovac Cochlear Plus type

675. Which, BTW, is sold, but not manufactured by the company. Not that that

matters.

(The only present maker of zinc-air cells in the US is Energizer, at a plant

in Bennington, Vermont.)

Where it is VERY cold and windy today! <G>

albeit with no published data to support such..)

Thus, the purchase of a year's supply or more would be quite safe, storage

wise.

and did a study on them and also the ones I received with my Freedom. Six

different brand of batteries.

The Zenipower lasted the longest, about three hours more than the ones I

received from Cochlear. That was for six batteries.

The ZeniPower cost about half as much as any of the others.

I couldn't tell any difference in the quality of hearing with any of them.

So the conclusion is I will be using ZeniPower in the future.

start using them once the current supply of Power1s is exhausted (about 10

days away)

I haven't received the bill from Visa yet so don't know exactly what they

cost but at current conversion rates is around $NZ54.37 including freight

for 96 batteries.

Purchasing that number of Power1s from the audi locally would have cost me

$96.

I'm hoping for a bit longer than that! 3 batts currently last me two days

so......lemesee.....96 should be worth 64 days minimum, but with luck it

will be better than that.

Also in one of your previous e-mails you mentioned something about " not the

best to be sending the money out of the country " or words to that effect.

Well, the Power 1's are made in Germany (by Varta, I believe) so money is

going overseas no matter where you get your batteries.

After I have used the Zenis for a while I'll let you know about their

performance and endurance

maybe this is one of the differences between the 3G and the Freedom - with

my 3G I initally started at 3 days (per 3 cells) and this remained quite

constant up to the mapping I had at around 9 months when it became 2 days

per 3 cells. The audi said this was to be expected with the power levels she

had programmed. It has remained at 2 days (per 3) since then and external

noise (or lack of it) does not seem to have affected the life - I am hoping

(high hoping but low expecting) that the Zenipower cells will last a bit

longer than the Cochlear recommended Power1s. But even if they only last the

same time, the saving makes purchasing the Zenis worthwhile.

That is very interesting information Mike. I didn't know that CI power

usage varies according to the program, type of usage etc. I'd better get

used to carrying lots of batteries on me and being organized about it!

The number of batteries you will use per month is variable depending

on your program and how you yourself use your CI. I found in the

beginning I was going through about 90-100 batteries per months now I

use 12-15 per month so big difference. I started with Hi Ace at the

fastest speed and now I am at a much lower rate of speed which makes

all the difference, I also noticed if I am in a noisy environment for

an entire day it can shorten the battery life sometimes by almost half

a day. I normally have a quiet setting in my office but when I travel

it can be very noisy and I do notice a difference in battery

performance.

If the batteries are not of high quality (i.e Duracell, etc) you may not get

as much battery life out of them or you may experience a decrease in sound

quality. But no harm will come to your processor as far as I know.

development in battery technology the past 2 years so things will only

improve for everyone who depends on batteries – OK who does not depend

on batteries. But that aside there have been huge improvements,

Toshiba will soon release a new battery designed to power laptops for

30 plus hours and can be recharged in less than 30 minutes, that will

be wonderful once that technology is available for things like our

CI’s.

Of course the way I look at it I would carry one of those old 9V Dry

cells (remember those – size of a lunch box) if I had to, to make my

CI work…lol

I may know where the confusion may be from.

Older AB CI users had the release of an upgraded battery two years

ago that improved their battery life. These batteries improved from

the first released ones that only provided some people with a few

hours of battery life. I clarified when a Nucleus Advocate

mentioned the two hour battery life on this list that there is

better technology available from AB. But the rechargable batteries

just keep on living an some have not had to order new batteries from

AB and have not received this technology; as the batteries can last

for years.

Maybe this is where the confusion came from. But from 's post

her battery life improved due to software changes that she tried for

AB.

I guess the moral of the story is things can change and improve.

The size and weight of a BTE is changable. Battery life is

something that can be increased. Technology keeps improving all the

time.

I substitute teach for an IU (Intermediate unit). I work with deaf and hard

of hearing students. The classrooms that serve as the kids' base room (where

they go when not mainstreamed) always have disposable batteries (several

sizes) on hand for those that wear hearing aids and CIs. I've, myself, had

occassion to take advantage of this when I was in ,my batteries died, and my

personal

supply of batteries were in my other pocketbook! (I did replace the ones I

uses). The IU audiologist also is available to test each kid's aid or CI to be

sure it is working optimally and solve easy problems like new tubing or even

making and delivering new molds. This is a great help to those with CI

centers far away, as well as for those who can't afford to go independently to a

local audiologist.

Hi Jackie-

Working in a classroom I just wondered how often the kids with CIs have

equipment issues. I speak with parents and teachers daily and to be honest,

the only battery issues I have come across is when batteries ordered through

the CI Manufacturer by the center for a Medicaid recipient are delayed. What

I do deal with on a daily basis is parents and teachers calling to say a

child's processor is not working. We go through the troubleshooting and

usually something does need to be replaced. I am amazed at how hard kids are

on their equipment! I haven't had a problem with no sound since two weeks

after I was turned on - this happens to kids all the time! Some schools do

have backup microphones, cables and coils which really helps.
