This is called genetic engineering, and pharmaceutical companies are spending a fortune on it.

Gleevec is an example of a genetic "smart bomb" drug that targets a particular gene. Patients who are susceptiple to chronic myelogenous leukemia often have a defect in what is called the Philadelphia Chromosome. Chromosomes 9 and 22 stick together to form the philadelphia chromosome which harbors a gene known as the bcr-abl gene. This gene codes for proteins called kinases which fuel prolific cell growtn (i.e. cancer) . Unfortunately, even in this very specific chromosomal abnormality, resistance develops. Many patients who had initial wonderful results with Gleevec have relapsed. Cancerous cells have tremendous capacity to adapt. In other cancers where the disease is not so easily associated with a specirfic abnormality, things will be even tougher. The "Yin and Yang" of the 20 some-odd tumor suppressor genes and 100 some-odd oncogenes form the players in a continually revolving genetic death dance. There is a good chance that there are more players we don't know about than we do know about.

It's probably quite an over-simplification to compare the molecular biology of cancer with the relationship betwen a sickle cell erythrocyte, and the parasite that carries malaria. Sickle cell anemia is caused by a mistake in two amino acids of the more than 570 amino acids which make up hemoglobin. In this case two negative charged amino acids are replaced by two neutral amino acids. This leads to clumping of the deoxygenated hemoglobin...which simply creates an environment in which the parasite cannot thrive. Sickle cell is not a desirable condition, and patients usually die young and have extremely painful crisis experiences.

Boik's book "Natural Compounds in Cancer Therapy" provides a basis for the potential role of natural products...and many of these products potentials are rooted in their ability to upregulate or "express" tumor suppressor genes, and down regulate oncogenes, or their proteins. This "redifferentiation" may allow the cell to fall under normal "fail-safe" control...where a programmed cell death called apoptosis eliminates the cancerous cell. 's book does a much better job than these few sentences of describing the dynamics.

Best to all,

Guthrie

YOu can't as far as I know.

The old vaccine stored someplace is the same as before

There is new being developed that is totally different but of course don't

have that yet as it hasn't been tested but will be tested on all the crazed

panicked masses out there.

If penetrating that deep into the body, doesn't it harm badly the

intestinal flora when pulsing the low of the back?

Hey, this I know the answer to. Well, anyway I think I do. I know it does

when pulsing the abdomen, so I'm assuming the same is true with the low

back. One should take acidophilus. Gail

The medical community says that once you have your initial 3 shots, there is

no need for a booster. This will only be current, of course, until

vaccinated people start showing up as Hep B positive at which time, boosters

will no doubt be added.

All the best

Meryl (the cynic :-)

Question

Does anyone know when to get a booster for a hep B shot?

I know the answer is never, but this is a question a co-worker asked. His

doc

told him every 4 yrs. I thought that didn't sound right either.

Dr. R says " No. " However, I'm not going to lie and act like I stick by the

book all the time. I have drank tea on occasion. No, soda's though. They

don't even sound appealing to me.

And you know something that's weird? And I'm blaming this on the pregnancy

and changing tastes because of it, but I LOVED Gatorade. That was ALL I

would drink up until about 2-3 months ago. Now, I cannot force myself to

drink it. Is that not odd? I've been drinking mostly lemonade now and that

is getting old. UGH! What to drink, what to drink... <grin> I'd sure

rather have this problems than the problems I had 126 pounds ago, though.

" Technically " the answer is no --- not because of the caffeine but

because of the acidity of the tea. However, Celestrial Seasonings

peppermint tea lists only peppermint leaves as an ingredient, i.e. no

" tea " and I do drink that. Read the labels and then I doubt that in

small does it will hurt you either way.

Hope you feel better soon!

My understanding is that decaf is OK since the primary problem with caffeine

of itself is that it interferes with calcium absorption, a problem for all

of us.

It is the acid in decaf that causes the problem. It has more acid than regular

coffee. Acids are not good for our new stomachs!

Hey have you tried Postum it tastes' like coffee but is a wheat drink. It

helps when it is cold to have something warm that you can drink that isn't

bad for ya. I tried the hot cocoa and sugarfree but it makes my stomach sick.

And you can put in the creamer and equal and it isn't bad. hugs marg

Suzanne, I've found a couple of things to drink that replace coffee

and tea. I don't necessarily miss coffee but I do miss a warm drink

when I get cold. Try Swiss Miss " no sugar added " hot chocolate. It

has about 50 calories in a full cup. I also drink a hot apple cider

drink I picked up at Sam's (comes in individual serving packets).

That has 60 calories in each serving (but is not sugar free).

I second the Postum -- it is wonderful -- before surgery, I used to only

drink one cup of coffee in the morning -- didn't think I'd miss it. But I

did miss it horribly, and Postum is a wonderful replacement. Of course I

drink it with cream and sweetner, so I'm not certain how it would be for you

folks who like it black. But it sure is worth a try.

God bless.

Postum comes in two kinds; one tastes like coffee. It is really good with the

flavored creamers--tastes like a cappuchino.

I usually breathe through my mouth, but it has more to do with the

fact I broke my nose when I was a kid and not so much because of

dwarfism.

Well, up to 3-4 years after the high titer vaccine in Africa, there was an

" excess " of deaths among girls, forcing that particular approach to be

discontinued. Since, in general, no one who cares is given the funding to

do this kind of research, there really is no good answer to your question.

Ok your child goes in for a vaccine lets say MMR and Varicella I am using my

DD as an example since she is 15 mo old and is due for MMR. How long after

the vaccine can a reaction occur and be counted as a reaction to the

vaccine.

SOme things i read these kids are getting sick and dieing 3 mo after the

vaccine. SOme kids get sick with in days or weeks but 3 mo can that still be

counted as a reaction to the vaccine?

I am asking cause as a child I had seizure and unknow high fever 3 mo after

my mmr ran fever for 2 mo after that and then lost my hair in a big patch

which still never grew back.

And my dd had seizure also i am gonna call the Dr to see when she had her

MMR

to see how close in relation it was.

Amy,

There is also something called the 'double hit'.

Wakefield mentions it. It is when a child has the first MMR and

everything seems ok, then after the booster at about age 4yrs old, the child

regresses.....

sometimes into autism.......
