Thanks Mariya, I do think I will try to wait it out a couple more

weeks. Besides the office would probably just say, sorry you can't

get another fill yet. I was able to get those 2 lbs off again, just

hope they don't creep back on. I need to stay off the scale!

Sounds as if you'll need to be a very good advocate for yourself! You

have the right to have your doctor answer all questions to your

satisfaction, and explain what he is doing clearly. Both you and he

will need to be very knowledgeable about banding for you to do well.

You may even need to help teach him things, like the special needs of

the VG band, if he is pretty inexperienced with it, as it seems.

You should not be bending over to " help things along. " Just eat a

bit less, eat slowly, and allow it to go through at it's own rate. It

is dangerous to bend over and put all that back-pressure on the

stomach and band. It also hurts the sphincter at the junction of the

stomach and esophagus, which is already weakened in most obese

people, and can lead to reflux.

The band is to be installed in a VERY specific location and angle so

that it works well. There is little room for error, or the pouch is

too big and ineffective. The band surgeons are all taught this in the

Inamed training, so there should be no variation.

Many ports heal a bit tilted, but as long as they are accessible for

fills, " tilted " is fine. If they are not accessible, another small

outpatient surgery is needed to re-position the port and suture it

down again.

Please ask any question that you may have! There is no such thing as

a " dumb " question - we are all learning more every day. The more you

learn and know, the better chance you have to lose good weight, and

to keep your band safe and healthy.

You might want to print out the following information I got from Don

Mills, the Inamed rep, when i asked about the VG band 15 months ago:

(reposted from previous posts on Bandsters, SmartBandsters, and

several other band sites)

Hello Sandy,

I'm afraid that some of the confusion was created by INAMED itself

with regard to the name of this band. The Vanguard band is the old

name for the LAP-BAND VG System. Same band. " Vanguard " had some

negative implications. So our marketing dept gave the band the name

LAP-BAND VG System. Turns out that is not a very good name either

because it can be confused with the VBG procedure.

The VG band is being sold in Europe and now in Mexico too, and soon

in the US. However, the VG band is quite different from the 11 cm

band that has been sold

in Europe and Mexico. The 11 cm band continues to be available in

those locations.

We don't quote the circumference for the VG band as it depends how

the band is measured. It cannot correctly be called either an 11 cm

or a 12 cm band. The band is different enough that we really do not

want to measure it in the way we measure the 9.75 cm and 10.0 cm

bands. In any case the band is longer (when open) than 12 cm. But

please do not refer to it as either an 11cm or a 12 cm band! The VG

band has been misquoted by surgeons and others as a 11 cm band. This

is incorrect and probably comes from confusion with the 11 cm band

sold internationally but not in the US.

The LAP-BAND VG is available in the US to all band surgeons and also

now in Mexico. Several have already been installed in both the US and

in Mexico.

The fill capacity is 10 cc. The first 3.5 cc only fills the band

tubing and

do not increase restriction or inflate the band at all. Therefore,

fist fills are generally in the 4.0 - 5.0 range.

The indications for the LAP-BAND VG are generally for patients with

BMIs larger than 45, OR patients with larger anatomy (i.e. thicker

gastric walls and/or substantial omentum), patients that may have

more fat in the immediate band area and for the pars flaccida

procedure when the additional tissues that are enclosed within the

band are larger than usual.

The surgeon will make the decision as to which band is appropriate

for a particular patient. The above indications do not mean that

patients with the 10 cm band or the 11 cm band have an incorrect

band. It also does not mean that a surgeon might choose to use the

LAP-BAND VG System when he/she could have chosen the 10 cm band.

It's so interesting how doctors do fills differently. My doctor says

that if after a fill you don't notice restriction after 5 days, its

not going to change much, and to come back in for more fill. I'm

currently waiting out a really big fill (from 5 to 8) to see if I need

a smidge of unfill - I've had reflux twice in four days since my fill,

but both times were when I took my pills really close to bed time.

We have often seen that a fill can take 1-2 weeks to kick in. all the

very busy, longterm docs have seen this phernomina, althoughy there is

no reasonable explanation we have come up with.

There have also been reports on every boards for years of people

getting a tiny fill more within a week or two of a first one, and then

having a major OVERfill, resulting in needing to have the entire fill

removed for a good perios of time. It's is suspected then that both

fills seemed to " take effect " at once, and it was far too much. Sure

wish we could figure all this out!

Band knowledge continues to improve and evolve, and we are far from

knowing everything! I always suggest procedding cautiously with fills,

and Inamed teaches that a wait of 4 weeks or so between fills is very

wise.

Also, the point of the band is NOT " feeling restriction " - it is weight

loss. It is the weight loss that determines if you need another fill,

and you cannot see progress in this area for at least 2-3-4 weeks after

a fill. Many lose fine simply by getting fill sooner, and do not FEEL

any " restiction. " at all. Most of my own clients are this way, and many

I talk with.

It's good to never take any meds, eat, or drink ANYthing within an hour

(at the least) of bedtime, especually with a tight fill. Many need to

stop solids 2-3 hours or more before bedtime to avoid reflux, which is

dangerous in a number of ways.

Hope this fill turns out to be great! Sandy RN

Well, you could be too tight - hard to tell at the moment. Can you

swallow fluids, at least? One episode of foaming doesn't tell us much.

The stoma swells within an hour or so of the fill, so there is not a

great way to tell how a fill will be. The best test is to have 1/2 cup

of yogurt or applesauce aftere the fill. Water alone is not a good

test, as it should always go through. thr only thing water can tell is

if you are totally blocked off.

" Sliming " is when you have eaten too much or forgottten another of the

rules, and your pouch and stoma are unhappy. Your salivary glands start

pouring out thick saliva to try to " lubricate " the problem through, but

this is the LAST thing a Bandster needs, as the saliva has nowhere to

go if you are full or your stoma is blocked with food, and all the

saliva will come back up, with or without a barf.

Have only fluids for a day or so and see how you are. If you cannot get

in at least 64 oz a day, or cannot advance to solid foods over the next

few days, then you are too tight and need a bit out. You always want to

have as little stress (fill) on the stomach as you can have to still

lose slowly - never the largest fill you can try to get away with.

Mariya, Put a warm heating pad on your chest for 20 mi at a time,

several times tonight. Try to sip warm fluids, as you are getting

dehydrated by now, and this can cause further swelling. Try like 1/2

tsp at a time. Hot tea with lemon is ideal.

I'm betting you do need an unfill, and please get it tomorrow -

don't try to get thru the weekend.

After the unfill, have fluis only for 24 hrs so your stoma can rest

and heal. Trying solids will only further irritate it and delay

healing.

Overfills are not fun, but they are only a small, temporary glitch

easily taken care of (if you don't wait too long) . You'll be right

back on track soon. SAndy r

Thank you to everyone for your advice. I had a sleepless nigth that I

would not wish upon my worst enemy. Went to the Dr.'s office for an

unfil. This was not my Dr. but his associate. When he took out what

was in the band, which was supposed to be about 6.5cc - it turned out

that it was more like 8cc! So now I'm back down to just under 6cc and

seem to be feeling much better - at least for now. Gonna try to get

some sleep.

But the lesson learned is that you should always make sure you know

how much is in the band and that your Dr. is careful in measuring that...

Thanks again.

" I sleep with my implant on... "

That may be the key right there. That area underneath the magnet does

need to rest. Even if its not the cause, you really should take a break

from wearing the headpiece.

My boys with implants still get ear infections just like any other kid

on the street. I'm not sure if they're more apt to get them because of

the implant or not.

BUT, I have noticed that one of my boys has thinner skin over his

internal part, and his skin is more easily irritated. Even though he

falls asleep with his CI on, I make sure to take it off at night to

give the skin a chance to " rest " , too. A very few times, moreso in the

beginning, I've put topical antibiotic on his implant site, just to

help his skin when irritated.

Hope your ear infection gets better quickly! :)

Although I do not have an implant, (my daughter will soon be receiving

one) I know how scary it is to HAVE to take antibiotics when you are

pregnant. What antibiotic did they prescribe? Doctors are very good

about prescribing low dosage antibiotics (or whatever the correct

terminology would be) as long as they know that you are pregnant or

nursing. They don't want something to happen as much as you don't.

When I was pregnant with both of my children, I had upper respiratory

infections with both pregnancies that didn't go away until after they

were born! I think I had two rounds of antibiotics with my second child

and she turned out fine. I also took antibiotics with my first child.

Although she was born deaf, I was assured that the antibiotics that I

took did not cause the deafness. I always made sure that the doctor knew

I was pregnant and I always asked just to be sure that we both knew that

whatever was prescribed would not hurt the baby. They should tell you

that it will take longer for the infection to stop since you are

pregnant, but that is because your resistance is down and you can't take

the " good stuff " to kill the infection, so don't be alarmed if it seems

like it is taking forever to start feeling better. I am sure that

those who currently have CI's can reassure you that your CI is fine.

And don't worry about the antibiotics. Your baby will be fine, your CI

will be fine and you will feel better in no time too!

Congratulations on your baby!

HI, I am new to this group and I have question for all of you. I

recently was diagnosed with an ear infection.. I have had my implant

since 1999...I am 31 years old, working as a RN. Anyway, When i was

examined, they said my scalp was moderately read around the implant.

so I was started on Antibiotics. I am scared to death because I am 12

weeks pregnant. I don't want to lose my implant...so I have to take

the Antibiotics. they have assured me that they are safe, but I am a

skeptic about taking anything. I was wondering if any of you have had

this? I have had no pain, no Headaches.. I did have some water in my

ears and I think that is what led to the ear infection. Any help

would be greatly appreciated. My dr. seemed hopeful that it will

clear up. I sleep with my implant on, and am very attached to it.

It sounds like you have a very mild infection and it will probably

go away with the antibiotics you are taking. If the infection can be

contained and not spread to the implant, it will likely not need to

be explanted. Be extra careful and keep a close watch for any

adverse changes to the infected area. If you observe any - contact

your surgeon immediately - do not dalay and allow it to become staph

infected.

Has your doctor taken a sample of the infected area and sent it to a

lab? Insist that he does this.

I am speaking from experience. It happened to me a just over a year

ago - and they had to remove the implant and subsequently implanted

in my other ear.

Please take care of this - it can become very serious.

I don’t know how the discharge upgrade system works, but there’s a

three-year statute of limitations for those petitioning boards for

correction of military records. IF the discharge upgrade system works the

same way, there may not be anything you can do now (seven years after your

discharge).

I suggest you contact my attorney, J. Byron Holcomb [bylaw@...; (206)

no benefit from referring people to Byron, other than knowing they’re

well-represented. I paid for all my legal fees.) Byron (and I) are in the

Seattle area, and on Pacific time.

's correct, but according to the BCMR (Board for Correction of Military

Records) - " In the interest of justice " the BCMR will review cases beyond

the 3 year limit. Based on the timing of the 2003 and 2004 federal judicial

findings the 3 year statute of limitation should be waived, and has been in

similarly situated AVIP cases to date.

Good point, Buzz. You’re correct about the possibility of waiving the

three-year window. I was of the impression that they only did it in years

when the Cubs won the Series.

My concern is that the BCMRs and related boards seem to epitomize the credit

card commercial where the people answer unconditionally “NO!” to every

request, no matter the merit of the plaintiff’s petition. I’ve been “behind

the door” on such rulings while concentrating on my own litigation, and

wasn’t aware that the Federal Judiciary has come down on the side of

Veterans so often as it evidently has. It’s nice to have “friends” with the

requisite clout to force the DoD to actually do the correct things, rather

than its putting its institutional interests before those of servicemembers.

My husband who got a dishonorable discharge from the Air Force has had no

luck in getting his discharge upgraded. We tried it 2 times ourselves. We

have joined the suit with Mark Zaid-it is not quite up and running yet as he

is still in legal process with another suit but contact him-there is a 1

time fee service men/women 250.00 I think and if you were an officer it is

500.00. Hopefully it will go trial this next year.

Anyone know of anyone else getting their record

I got my records changed from " General Under Honorable " to " Honorable " through

the BCMR. This was granted, six years ago. There has been another instance

where a former marine just got his upgraded to honorable, approx. 2-3 months

ago. I believe posted this information. To my knowledge, if this

attempt fails (BCMR), the only recourse a person has is to hire an attorney -

one may as well jump on the suit with Mark Zaid, considering it's a class action

of either 250.00 or 500.00 to participate, which will be far cheaper then

obtaining a personal lawyer. (IMHO).

Dear Usha,

The only suggestion I now have is that you and your son start a local

group. I'm not sure how you would go about this, but I know in California

that Susie Linquist has been teaching immunics in the street, and manages

to draw a small crowd for each class. The classes are 20 minutes long.

It doesn't have a have to be happening for you in order to teach it, though

I know it is happening for your son anyway.

Best wishes and good luck. Let us know how it goes.

As for side affects, I am not sure how you and Kayden communicate, sign language, etc. But try hand and body sign, i.e. take a bananna and bite it, then rub your tummy and make a happy face and say mmm.... Take a bite of a pickle and make a sour face, etc. That might help, ask your physician, books with pictures are a BIG HELP!!! Your local public library should have some information for you and Kayden to look at. Keep us posted on how things are going!!! My husband was/is against it. He thought I was doing it for vanity, and that he loved me the way I was. I said if he loved me he'd realize I'm doing this for my health, and support me trying to make myself healthy. It comes down to you; what do you think you should do, what do you need to do? I came to this decision after trying everything under the sun. I know I'm not going to be a model when this is all said and done. BUT I will be able to run and play with my kids, get on rollercoasters again, go to Hawaii and not have to pay for 2 airplane seats! Maybe he is afraid that with the new you, you won't want him anymore; that you will see things about him you never noticed before. Maybe he is just insecure about your relationship? Ask him.Kim
