This could be water retension. Our bodies don't always stay at the same

Hi Cami,

I would suggest picking a time and day to weigh yourself and then

try, try , try to resist the urge to weigh any other time.

I have found that my weight will fluctuate during the day. I have

also found that if I lose 2-3 lbs and if I weighed the next day I

might have gained 1 lb back.

So, I decided it would be a lot less stressful to weigh once a week.

I weigh on Friday mornings and I do my very best not to weigh any

other time.

Hope this helps,

It was a suggestion that manufactures remove Thimerosal from vaccines in

1999. They were given 5 years to comply and remember this is just a suggestion

not

a law. This years flu shot for children has 25 micrograms. Go to the health

dept. or pediatrician's office of your choice and ask to see the package insert

that comes with all vaccines and see for yourself. Watch in surprise how the

nurse reacts when she sees it too! They have never read the package inserts.

All the best,

" Parents should decide through informed choice, which vaccines if any should

be

given to their children "

I had all my blood work done last week. Not good. I need some advice,

encouragement or something.

My blood count was very low. They put me on 650mg of iron for that.

My bad cholesterol was normal, but the good cholesterol was low.

I'm anemic.

Other than that everything else was fine. But I keep reading about everyone

having so much energy. I don't. I don't suck air now when I walk, but I sure

don't have any energy. I'm losing my hair and now I've got either acne or

some kind of skin thing starting. Bumps all over face, chest and back. Like

I'm getting ready to have a bad acne outbreak.

I look so much better but sure don't feel very good. Anybody else have

problems with their blood? Is it lack of protein or what. My PCP didn't have

much advice. Said I needed iron tablets and to come back in two months. Any

suggestions on any of this?

I would think that your energy level is being affected by the anemia. Once

you get that under control, I am sure that you will start to feel better. I

would talk to your PCP as well about this.

I hope that this gets better fast. Be sure to follow doctor's orders :) I

wish you good health!!

Kim,

Get in touch with the clos office. You definitely need to up your protein

and you would probably feel much better. What supplements are you taking?

Sounds as though you need to be taking supplements and make sure you are

taking your multi-vitamin TWICE per day. Remember, we need to double up on

that because our bodies do not absorb them fully. Take you iron that the

dr. gave you and I bet you will feel a real difference. Has anyone said

anything to you about your color being bad because usually that and lack of

energy are good signs of low iron. Drink your protein shakes and snack on

protein bars.

As far as the skin and the hair thing. I had terrible skin problems at

approximately 4 to 5 months out, but this will go away. Now all people can

say is how smooth my skin looks. You might want to ask your doctor to

prescribe something for this or go see a dermatologist if it really bothers

you. The hair, well I don't know what to tell you other than I promise it

will stop and grow back. My just sort of stopped falling out and I never

really noticed until one day there was no more hair in the drain to clog it

up. I tried everything as far as supplements and hair stuff and it did not

work. Hopefully you have a head full and no one will ever notice. I

promise it will not all fall out.

Hang in there, by approximately 9 to 12 months out you will be so thankful

for how you look and feel, but you have to be aggressive with your energy

problem and iron levels. Just be sure you take what you need and try to eat

the right things.

if the anemia doesnt respond to treatment you will need iron shots

and a script for chromagen forte' i KNOW anemia!! mine was cause

by not being DILIGENT with my vitamins! so now i take my vits like

it is a religious edict. the shots were awful... and they STAINED

my butt i looked like i had bruises from a mule-kick! i was a bit

put out over it... but no... at 2 years out the " permanant " stain is

GONE!i was so sure i would have them forever. the nurse told me they

tell people they are permanant because they often last over a

year.... and mine did but once i got my iron back up....it has

stayed. so now i feel like a million again! for a while people on

the list called me " the iron maiden " if you have any questions just

ask.

good luck hon

Hi I had my blood work in December and I was anemic too! Yes I was pooped

So I take my pills and try to eat spinach and raisins too. I also have been

attempting to jolt a little more exercise into my schedule, that is supposed to

make your good cholestrol go up. I will go back in May to check my levels

again. The first time after two months I was still low on iron but not as bad.

So keep faith, some of us have to take iron some don't. Once you have been on

your iron tablets for a few weeks you will notice your energy is better.

I'm taking a One Source vitamin 3 times a day, two citrucel tablets twice a

day, 325 iron twice a day, protonix and actigal. I have started taking zinc

for the hair loss.

Getting the protein in has been very difficult. I'm thinking I should start

on some of the protein drinks. Anybody have a good tasty recipe. I bought a

pre-made drink the other day and I couldn't even swallow it.

I used to love eggs and cheese and can't eat them anymore. They don't sit

well on the tummy. I eat beans, red meat, chicken and pork. No hamburger. It

upsets me terrible.

I'm now wondering (again) what I've done. I look so much better but I really

don't feel that great. I'm thinking I thought I'd feel 30 again. Ha Ha. We

shall see. I'm not giving up. I need to find some good quick sources of

protein and maybe that will make me feel better.

I'm on the run a lot with the twins and my older son and my job and etc etc.

just like the rest of you I'm sure, but most of the time I have not put

" food " as a priority in my day. I need to plan ahead and take a little extra

time

instead of running into Quicktrip for a bag of sunflower seeds I should

probably make a protein drink or something. But I'm tired and lack any energy

so

its that viscous circle that I need to step out of and get control. Okay, I'm

just rambling now.

Thanks for all the advice. Congrats to everyone for all your successes.

Look at this website this gives you maybe more information about GIST:

http://www.liferaftgroup.org Gleevec is till now the only medicin which give

prolonging lifeduration for GIST. If you take additional f.i. the Gersondiet

www.gerson.com or similar diet you will probably have a good chance to get

control over your cancer. If you get resistant to Gleevec a new trial

started with Sugen, but is all weritten at the website of the lifeaftgroup.

June 4, 2003

New compound shows promise when Gleevec loses potency in patients with rare

digestive-tract cancer

Fletcher, MD, confers with Demetri, MD.

Patients with the rare digestive-tract cancer known as gastrointestinal

stromal tumor (GIST) who develop resistance to the front-line drug Gleevec

may benefit from a novel compound that targets specific genetic mutations in

GIST cells.

At the American Society of Clinical Oncology's annual meeting in Chicago,

scientists from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute presented data from an early

stage clinical trial of a new drug called SU11248 in patients with

Gleevec-resistant GIST. The study, headed by Demetri, MD,

demonstrated that 11 of the 18 patients (61 percent) with progressive

metastatic GIST experienced disease shrinkage or stabilization with no

further progression when treated with SU11248. Like Gleevec, SU11248 target

specific enzyme switches, called kinases, that keep cancer cells growing.

The findings were presented June 1.

An estimated 5,000-10,000 cases of GIST are diagnosed in the United States

each year. Surgery has been effective in treating some patients when the

disease has not spread, but there are few treatment options for those

patients in whom the tumor spread beyond the original site of surgery. Last

year, the FDA approved the use of Gleevec as the first effective treatment

for GIST. Gleevec has proven to be highly beneficial therapy for metastatic

GIST, but not all patients can tolerate it and some develop resistance to

the drug over time.

" Approximately 85 percent of GIST patients benefit from treatment with

Gleevec, but, over time, they tend to develop resistance to it and the

disease once again begins to grow, " says Demetri. " Two-and-a-half years

after starting treatment with Gleevec, approximately three-quarters of

patients will show some level of resistance to Gleevec. There is no other

effective treatment for these patients, and that is why we need new

treatment options for them. "

Last year, Demetri and his colleagues, including Fletcher, MD, of

Dana-Farber and Heinrich, MD, of Oregon Health and Science

University, sought to identify what those additional mutations are and to

design a counterattack with a new targeting strategy. They screened a

variety of compounds known to act against abnormal enzymes. The results with

SU11248, which is now made by Pfizer Oncology of La Jolla, CA, were

particularly promising.

" SU11248 is a small molecule that inhibits the production of four enzyme

switches: KIT, PDGF-R, VEGF-R, and FLT-3, " explains Demetri, who is also an

associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. " Laboratory and

animal studies showed it could be effective in GIST cells that had become

resistant to Gleevec. The VEGF-R blockage is particularly interesting, too,

since this drug is a powerful anti-angiogenesis drug, blocking the growth of

new blood vessels to feed tumors, as well as shutting down other overactive

enzyme switches inside the cancer cells. "

Based on the results of those pre-clinical studies, Demetri and his

colleagues began a Phase I clinical trial of SU11248 in patients with

Gleevec-resistant GIST. (The main purpose of a Phase I trial is to determine

the safe dose for administration of new medications.) Successive groups of

patients were treated with SU11248 at starting daily doses of 25, 50, or 75

mg. for 14 days, followed by a 14-day rest period per cycle. The maximum

safe dose was determined to be 50 mg. after some patients at the 75-mg. dose

level experienced unpleasant, but temporary, side effects (fatigue, nausea

and vomiting).

The development of SU11248 as a potential treatment for Gleevec-resistant

GIST " is an exciting example of the new world of targeted therapy, " Demetri

remarks. " We can analyze cancer cells to identify mutations, then screen

drugs in the laboratory that target those specific mutations. The resulting

therapies should be more effective and less toxic than traditional

chemotherapy, which tends to attack normal cells as well as cancerous ones. "

In addition to Fletcher and Heinrich, the study's other contributor were

Annick Van den Abbeele, MD, of Dana-Farber, Fletcher, MD, of

Brigham and Women's Hospital, and collaborators at Pfizer Oncology (formerly

the biotechnology company known as Sugen).

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is a principal teaching affiliate of Harvard

Medical School and is among the leading cancer research and care centers in

the United States. It is a founding member of the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer

Center, which has been designated a comprehensive cancer center by the

National Cancer Institute.

Most American docs won't band you with a BMI that low, but many

Mexican ones will, including Kuri, I believe. I know Dr. Ortiz in TJ

has banded people with that type of BMI. He considers it " preventive

maintenance " to keep you from getting up to a BMI like your brother's.

The few insurance plans that cover a band definitely will not cover

you with a 32 BMI.

Well, most of us have done many of those things, if not all. But the

band will only restrict the amount you CAN eat, not the amount you

WANT to eat. You still have to be willing and able to eat small

amounts and learn to live differently. I too was a quantity eater and

it has been rough, but even at a decade older than you, plus being a

nne,

I also live in Washington State, about 35 miles west of Olympia. I

did alot of research and am having my band done in TJ next week (Aug

21st) by Dr. Kuri. Cost (not including airfare) is $8950 for

EVERYTHING. Surgeon, Hosp, Anesth, Physical and pre-op testing by

an internal med.dr, and hotel for your support person. My mother

had lap-band locally and it cost $27,000.

I encourage you to contact Joanne or Ishi, two of the patient

coordinators thru his web site (www.beliteweight.com). They can

invite you to join that Group to hear from others that are pre-

op and post-op thru Dr. Kuri.

As for me, I'll have more to tell after next week!

thank you for the information. i think if we have to pay for it the 9K is

the way to go, esp when you hear the great stories about lap band. i am on

Dr. Kuirs too. I am just not sure about having it done. i have

fought this weight all my life, and esp the weight in my mind has been equally

as bad. my bmi is 33 so i am at the very low range to have it done. but my

feelings of hunger are always there, and i am tired of trying( I have to

diet like crazy just to stay at 220). i want to live my last 50 not feeling

like i have to hungry constantly in my life. i am still thinking about it.

most of my friends would think i am ridiculous. maybe i am

good luck

Where are you going to get your follow-up (fills, etc.) in Washington

after you return. I've been investigating the pros and cons of L-B

surgery in Wash vs Mexico. I've heard alot of doc's won't follow you

if you've had surgery elsewhere and I've heard you might need as many

as 5 fills the first year. So would the cost of five trips to Mexico

be that much different than having the whole thing done in WA??

Laproscopic L-B surgery is only 15-17,000 depending where you have it

done in WA.

I don't have any idea how to fix this other than to suggest that you contact

your CI Center tomorrow or Tuesday if it's a holiday there tomorrow. In the

meantime, rather than keeping it on 24/7 until you can get it in to be fixed,

you can take the batteries out when you want it to be off. It should be

repairable but if not and you haven't gotten a replacement processor before, you

should be able to get one and these are normally overnighted to the CI Center

who puts your programs in it and then you pick it up and give the center back

the broken one to send back to Cochlear.

Good luck! Let us know how you make out.

Thanks for your (comforting) reply, Alice. With my blindness I am in a bit

of a panic lest the BWP stops functioning. I have the BTE to fall back on

but don't hear as well with it.
