Hi ,

I am six years out and through my journey and alot of research over

the whole weight loss surgery spectrum, I have learned that some

weight gain happens to many people. There are various reasons and

will not attempt to take a guess as to why you are gaining. This

" tool " that we have had does work. However, sometimes we have to work

the " tool " . I know with myself, I have gained alot of weight back. I

was too thin at one time and " thought " I could go back to eating like

I used to. Well, I got what I asked for, weight gain, but a little

too much me thinks. As I researched the various weight loss

surgeries, statistically, I noticed that after two or three years out,

many folks gained back an average of 20 lbs. So, this is not unusual

if you look at weight loss surgeries as a whole. I still think the

MGB is the better surgery and works the best if we all follow the

program. I don't know if this has helped you. All I can say is, for

myself, I need to get back into exercise and eating better.

ita, you're not alone. I had my surgery with Dr. Rutledge in December of

2000. I too lost only about 65 pounds and struggle with the same doggoned 10

pounds that I've put back on. I'm thankful for the 50 that I've kept off, but

like you am dissappointed that I never did reach my goal. I don't post often

either because I too am embarassed when I see the awesome results of many

others. I am very happy for them and celebrate their loss, but I understand

that we're not all alike, and our losses will be different. Again, I'm thankful

for the weight I did loose and the fact that I've kept most of it off.

Take care and God bless.

from Michigan.

Re: Re: Weight Gain

Dear ,

I appreciated 's response to your concerns regarding weight gain,

listen to what she say because she has done fantastic since her surgery!

I on the other hand was only able to lose about 55 - 60 lbs and have

unfortunately gained about 10 -15 lbs back. I seem to hit one plateau after

another

and have been unable to really get the weight off like others. I tried

changing/refining my eating much more with small success, but I really think

that

one needs to make sure that they are getting enough physical exercise. I know

that I wish that I would have worked with a personal trainer from the very

beginning like because I truly believe that it does make a difference in

how an MGB'er does with weight loss.

I have hesitated to write much on the board but definitely read it, just too

embarrassed to share much. My surgery was in April of 2004 with Dr.

Hargroder but I think that I am just one of the those folks that fights to hang

onto

every ounce of weight they have. (Yes, I did increase my protein, ... like

many suggested but the one thing that I did not do was exercise like I should

have and should. One really needs to have a balanced approach to weight and

health which I am still in quest of. I do feel better with some of the weight

gone, don't have a lot of excess hanging skin so I am still thankful for having

gone through the MGB.)

If I were to recommend anything, it would be to not give up on your good

eating habits ( which I fight with everyday because of the plateau status that I

unfortunately live with and have been overwhelming discouraged by) and most

definitely exercise.

Don't give up or be hesitant to ask the MGB group for advice and support

like me. Hang in there and do the right things and everything will work out.

Blessings to you,

You didn't say how far postop you are and that could make a big

difference in what is going on.

First, a gynecologic surgeon should have had no reason for doing

anything with your bypass, probably wasn't even close to

it. " Sluggish " bowels should not really be affecting things unless you

are constipated in which case you would be uncomfortable I would think

and would be doing something to take care of the discomfort, which

should ultimately take care of the weight gain.

My guess is that since surgery you have been less active while you are

recovering. You may also be eating differently,

more " indulgent " , " less healthy " which would account for some weight

gain. It is human nature to " nurture " ourselves after surgery, etc.

My thought would be to take a good hard look at what you are eating.

Is it in any way out of line. If so, adjust. If not, please talk to

your PCP and/or your surgeon about your concerns.

My best advice is .. don't let these few pounds " find friends " ....

speaking as someone who's pounds always seem to have friends!

Thank you for your kind email - I agree with everything you said and am

thankful for my loss and increased health. just wished that I would have been

one

of the blessed ones to have lost that 100 lbs too.

Nonetheless, I am still thankful.

Thanks for all the advice and support with my regards to weight

gain. I think I'll go ahead and call Dr. Rutledge and get his

outlook on my situation. Thanks to all!

Hi ,

Here I am! I have been savoring VCO since April 2004. I am normal weight

and not sick, except for some medical damage early in life and for some

really bad insomnia, which I believe has gotten worse since I started VCO.

It may be stimulating me too much. I also deal with bone loss, which I

reversed in the last year but was not particularly helped by VCO, rather by

other things. I have a super-excellent Total Cholesterol /HDL ratio (2.19),

normal blood sugar, good blood pressure (115/70 or less). My triglycerides

are steady at 55, which is really, really good. I eat a whole-foods

plant-based diet, which includes whole grains, beans and vegetables, but no

refined flours or simple sugars.

You say you have cut down on " calories " - it's my mission (on this list and

elsewhere) to translate these medical abstractions into real food. What

foods have you cut down on, and what foods are you eating now? Some people

do have to cut down on other foods to make room for the VCO. I think it's

worth it.

Nina

Weight Gain

It seems everyone on this site has some kind of problem. is there

anyone who is not sick? Normal size? Is there anyone who has been

taking VCO for more then 2 weeks? i want to know if you gained weight!

I am not overweight and i do not want to be. will this contribute to

weight gain? i have been using VCO for 2 1/2 weeks, the first week i

lost 2.4Lbs, the second week i gained 6lbs... i am scared to death.

yes, i do feel better, more energy, but i am gaining weight. i have

actually cut down on my calories and upped my exercise. no it is not

muscle. it is fat. is this happening to anyone? please respond...

I have been using VCO for about 3 years now, maybe longer. I am 61

years old, 6' tall and weigh 170 pounds. 5 years ago, I weighed

270. Not all the weight loss is from eating VCO. I cut out sugar,

milk, grains, flour, soft drinks, coffee, and other things which are

bad for me. I am able to control my diabetes without the use of

diabetic drugs. As part of a healthy diet, I feel VCO is good for

me, but it won't do miracles if one has a bad diet, does not get

enough sleep, or has other negative lifestyle habits.

I don't have any medical problems other than weighing a few more pounds than I

should. I didn't lose or gain weight when I started coconut oil about six

months ago. I just use it mostly in place of butter so I didn't take the

recommended 3-4 tsp daily. I feel better when I have it and have more energy to

exercise. I only lost the weight when I started eating more raw foods (veg and

fruit) and cut down on grains. I also avoid all processed food (as much as

possible) because 80% contains GMOs and probably 100% contain chemicals that

weren't meant by nature for human consumption..

I stopped eating all the processed foods, stopped drinking soda,

stopped cakes & cookies. I gave up coffee. For a while, I still

ate small portions of fruit and berries, but realized I had to give

them up too. No milk either. It was very rough for about the

first month, but I had this big non-healing hole in the sole of my

foot.

I had an older relative as a kid who had a perpetually infected

foot. She eventually had to get part of her foot amputated, then

later, the rest of the foot. Seeing her daughter change the

dressings on her mother's foot gave me nightmares. The smell of the

rotting flesh gave me nightmares. So when I had to confront my old

eating habits, my old nightmares came back to me to give me the

strength to persist in my new diet.

What does progesterone cream do? I am 37, so hormones may be the

cause of my continued weight gain. doesn't cause cancer or

something? do you feel different when you use the cream. will it

help with the weight gain? loss of sex drive? moods? the VCO has

Jacquie:

A hormone imbalance usually caused water-retention, I don't know about the

weight gain. That might be a thyroid imbalance. VCO should help with weight

loss.

When you added the VCO to your diet, did that LESSEN the hormone symptoms in any

measurable way?

yes it did. no more hot flashes. moods are alittle better. i do not think i

have water

retention. my legs do not swell. i exercise every single day. maybe it has

not been long

enough. my thyroid test came back fine. except for a nodule on my thyroid. the

doc said that

would not make it sluggish.

Glad to hear that your hormones have settled down some, due to VCO, you do seem

a bit young to be starting to have hormone imbalance.

Water retention (I believe) usually shows up as tight rings, swelling around the

eyes and sometimes dizziness if the fluid gets into your middle ear.

A nodule on your thyroid? Better have that looked at. I have a friend with a

nodule on hers and it was removed and checked.
