I have worried about the same thing with my son Owen. He is going to be five in June and he weighs 30lbs. And just to give a perspective on this, we have VERY big babies. My twin brother and I were 8lbs each at birth, Owen was 10lbs at birth (and 22 inches). My first and second boys were 26lbs at SIX months old!!! So Owen is remarkably tiny in our family of large children and adults. He is just a peanut (but very easy to dress since he never grows we get a lot of wear from the clothes!!!) He went on a pony ride two months ago and a woman very sweetly said to him "Oh, you're such a big boy! Are you 2 years old?" You should have seen Owen's face!!! Really, four year old disgust is a funny thing to see, when he told her he was four!!! I would bet by the look on her face she thought he was lying until she saw me nodding and laughing. But really, he does look so young, I swear, I won't have to pay for a movie ticket for him until he's in high school at the rate he's going...

Hi ,

While I was on Lex I put on 30 lbs. Wellbutrin was added

later because I wanted to stop smoking. Now I am not representing everyones

experience only my own. Now I am off the Lex and on Wellbutrin and

Effexor.....

Not everyone gains on Lex. Its just depends on how your body reacts to it...

I would like to know if anyone has gained weight on Lexapro and does anyone

take

wellbutrin with it.

Thanks

I've been taking Lexapro for depression since January and I've lost 37

pounds. (And I hope my appetite never returns...I have 40 more pounds

to go.) ;)

Hi Randy,

Don't know why, but I'm having the same problem. I workout 5 days/week and

haven't changed my diet either. I've been on 10 mg. since February and probably

gained about 8 lbs. Yuk. My clothes still fit the same, so I'm not sure where

it's going. But I guess the scale doesn't lie! Not real happy about this.

I know this is an old topic, but just curious as to how many of you

experienced weight gain while on lexapro. I was only on 5 mg a day, but after

a few

months on the medicine and not changing my diet at all, I find my weight

creeping up gradually. Any comments?

OMG!!!,

This is just my experience with Lex. I gained 50 lbs on

Lex. I was feeling good. But feeling bad everytime I stepped on the scale.

As with you it creeped up on my gradually. I was on Lex when it was still in

the trial stage. So maybe 2 years? That waas one of the many reasons I got

off lex

I've been on Lex since January and I've lost 40 pounds. I'm on 10 mg a

day for depression and anxiety. After some side effects at the start,

I'm feeling great. My weight was apparently tied to the depression.

My head is quiet. I can decide to not think about things instead of

worrying. I'm calm. I'm the happiest and most relaxed I've been in my

whole life. I have a normal relationship with food.

Lynn,

I weighed no more than 117lbs my whole life, (yes that's skinny) I am

5'8. 31 yrs old. I was on only 5mg Lex for about a year. After the

first 5-6months I noticed I couldn't fit into any of my jeans or

pants :( ugh, that was weird being so skinny and all. I started

weighing my self and I gained 18pounds, then 23, then 31. After that

I said no more.... I tried " diet " and exercise. Nada. When I went

on Lex I didn't eat more, actually at first it made my appetite go

away. I think it slows your metabolism down. I even had a thyroid

test done to see if that was the problem!! Hm

Not quite, . My gain happened before I took the RAI while I was hyper.

Some of us have an appetite that is just crazy and we spin around but cannot

wear off all the food we eat...

Kate

Weight Gain

As I understand, you gain weight when your thyroid disorder is

shifted from having hyperthyroidism or Grave's Disease to

hypothyroidism. Grave's Disease is a form of the thyroid disorder.

It is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system produces

antibodies which stimulate the TSH receptors of the thyroid gland.

The result is the non-suppressible overproduction of thyroid

hormone, resulting in the clinical manifestations of hyperthyroidism.

When a patient with Grave's Disease is treated with RAI (Radioactive

Iodine 125), his/her thyroid is destroyed. This procedure normally

produces an underactive body with very low metabolism. This is the

reason for the weight gain as the body's metabolism is slower than

normal.

Hy Gracie

It is the Endocrinologist who you might see with hyperthyroidism. But I guess a

good ENT might detect a thyroid problem also.

Hey Gracie

It is hard to find what you are asking in the midst of all this stuff. If you

put your question right at the top it's hard to miss...I think you were asking

about bad breath. I just did a search on internet and really didn't find much

connection. But there is a lot of good material about bad breath. One site

mentioned that being HYPOthyroid might lead to bad breath, and another suggested

getting your thyroid checked. But there are lots of sites there.

I would have to look into it further regarding the weight gain and its

relationship to both

hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. But again, it does not make much sense -- at

least

to my understanding -- that one would gain weight with a fast metabolism.

It it interesting that you mentioned gaining weight prior to RAI as I would

think the

endocrinologist may have prescribed you medication such as PTU or Methimazole

(Tapazole). These antithyroid medications suppress thyroid activity, meaning

they block or

inhibit thyroid hormone, which is essential for proper body metabolism. Taking

these

medication would slow your body metabolism and explains your weight gain. This

preparation of antithyroid medication before submitting a patient to RAI 125 is

a normal

procedure for doctors. They want to help alleviate some of your symptoms before

having

you go through the RAI 125 to destroy your thyroid.

No, , the endo did not prescribe anything to slow down my thyroid. As I was

waiting to have the RAI, it was not indicated. I took beta blockers for my

heart but the weight was there before then. Perhaps you just can't understand

an insane appetite but that's what does it for me.

Hi Susie

It's just a thought, but have you added in your VCO on top of your

normal dietary intake? For example, do you find that you are never

hungry and still not hungry in time for the next meal? It's

possible that you might be inadvertently overeating for your body's

requirements.

I agree with Katy. Did you add the oil on top of your diet that you

already had or did you replace your old fats with the coconut oil?

If you added the oil on top of what you normally eat, it may have put

you over your limit to gain. I replaced all my other cooking oils

with the VCO and replaced other fats in my diet with the VCO so my

normal fat intake pretty much stayed the same.

I also listen to my body and don't eat if I am not hungry. Last night

for dinner I just wasn't hungry and still full from lunch, so I just

had a very small smoothie with OJ, 1/2 banana, coconut milk, and some

powdered greens.

My name is Reese,Saia, I had mgb 3 1/2 years ago, I lost 220lbs, I have

had a lot of plastic surgery. I go back and forth with the five pounds all the

time. Right know I am 6 months pregnant, and I am trying to gain weight, so far

its about six lbs, but it seems to be all baby. I weighed 365 the morning of

surgery. In 2004 I got down to 135, way to low for me, I am 5' 7 " , and have

large bone structure, It took me a little over a year to get back to 145. I

stayed there, My five pound mark is 150, I wear size 4 and 6, depending on the

cut. I cant do this now because I am pregnant and need to be gaining weight, but

when I start to feel bigger or the scales move up too much, I go back to stage

one and stage two foods. I eat every couple of hours, but only small amounts,

lots of yogurt, and soup. I dont eat fast food, unless its a potato from wendys.

Stay away from fried foods, like kfc, and mcdonalds, every time I try to even

nibble on that junk I get sick.Right know I am pushing

the extra protein and vitamins for my baby, But most of the time I try to stay

by the book, if I dont I suffer.I think for most people that 5 pound mark is

pretty normal. We all worked so hard to get here, lets do the best we can to

prove to everyone, encluding ourselves that weightloss surgery is

successful.Thank You, mgb8-22-02 Dr.R

I think it all depends on how long the surgeons are doing the surgery

and how comfortable they feel about it. I know I heard that High

Point was only going to do 6 ft bypass's but now someone posted that

they said they will do 8ft on certain cases. I am sure they know

what they are doing. That is good news for people that have lots to

lose. I had a 7ft bypass by Dr Rutledge, thank God because I needed

it!! Bet you are having a boy! Just my guess, anyway yes please

keep me posted on what you are having. I am excited for you, I will

be a grandmama again this September still dont know the babys sex

yet. Doesnt matter to me but that will make 1/2 dozen grandkids for

me. WOW my family is GROWING. Glad its not me growing anymore so I

am here able to play with them, run with them and be here for them

the most important!!

Talk to you soon,

Hi !

I am sorry to hear that you are gaining weight. I had the mgb with Dr.

Hargroder as well. He is not living in Joplin anymore. His new phone

is 417-776-5900. I have not gained any weight back but I have heard of

people that have. I think I remember someone saying to get back on

your protein drinks and eats lots of fruits and veggies and lean

meats. Maybe doing some cardio traing will help too. I hope this

helps!

Good Luck!
