hi all , im new to the group, and not quite sure how to post so i am

using the reply button . i was recently diagnosed with reiters and as

and have so many questions i dont know where to start !! ive been having

pain for years but only recently saw a rheumatologist and she figures

this began about the time i was 19 following an infection (hla-b27 +)

ive been having all kinds of health problems recently , chronic

gastritis , diarrhea , mouth ulcers and almost crushing fatigue and pain

, she has started me on mtx and prednisone . she claims i will be

feeling so good in a few months time i will be feeling like my old self

.. is she being realistic?? saying i will be able to go back to work ect.

i havent worked since feb of 2000 and find it hard to believe that this

can just go into complete remission . id appreciate input on how

realistic she is being with me . sometimes its all i can do to walk into

the other room let alone go back to work ..........nancy

, my daughter was where you are today. That was... three years ago.

She came home from school, 10th grade, thanksgiving weekend and never

returned. By Cmas we had her on an 8 week medical leave, Certain she would

be better after the holidays and a couple weeks rest. She wasn't. In March

the medical leave expired and she returned to school... for three days.

Home again and home schooled remainder of the year.

The good news... during this time, she was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia,

chronic fatigue syndrome on top of the arthritis and about ten months later,

hypo thyroid too. It took a few months... she started on Celebrex, Prozac,

Some meds to help her sleep, because even though she slept 16 to 20 hours a

day, it was not restful sleep.

In February she started the change of medications. She may have also

started back on prednizone about that time... I get a bit foggy about it all

sometimes.

The good news... by May she was able to sleep only about 13 to 16 hours....

she even began to take part in life again... doing theater. In August one

day... she woke and thought... maybe she was feeilng better... she wanted to

try to get into the running start program at the high school, that would

allow her to take college classes. We did the testing... and she was in.

The end of Sept she began classes. It was only 2 and three hours a day four

days a week... But in January, a year after from coming home sick... she was

in college full time and doing really well.

Today... three years later... she is attending University of Washington full

time. She is also busy filming a movie and enjoying life on campus. She

still requires sleep... but not like three and two years ago.

Last year, she even took a part time job at a coffee shop, for fun in

addition to attending classes. She is not doing that currently, she is busy

with school.

I just want to say... YES!! If the doctor can treat you appropriatly, there

is Lots of hope! It takes time... but there really is a light at the end of

the tunnel.

When ADrienne started being so sick... I could NOT imagine how long it would

take... to get better... I kept thinking she would be better in a week or

so... It took a few more weeks than I expected... but she did get better.

Good luck!!! I look forward to hearing your progress!

And mine is glad when I am at 140/90 !!! I think it varies from person to

person and how you feel in yourself. I know my BP is borderline high but I

just have to live with that as I had such bad reactions to the medication.

hello Okemah Ann

i think my bp is just low at the moment because the spironolactone is

working well, before the spiro it was about 175/115 so 95/60 is quite

a drop and makes me dizzy (in the losing balance sense, not the

airhead sense!!)

is it okay for it to be that low? i thought the average normal bp was

120/80? but the doc seems to think its fine at 95/60? i suppose its

better to be lower rather than higher.

take care

Jane:Rob started growth hormone 4/25/03, one day before his 14th birthday. It would have been better to have started him sooner, but we were originally referred to the pediatric endocrinologist in August 2002, and the first one was not aggressive, and just wanted to watch him for 6 months. Additionally, he passed his growth hormone stimulation test, and that can make insurance approval iffy. So when we went back in 6 months, we saw the partner in the group, and due to the fact that Rob wasn't on the growth curve at all, he decided that although Rob produced growth hormone in response to the stimulation, he was not making growth hormone on his own, and that it would be an appropriate time to get him started on treatment. From what I have learned since, our window of opportunity for growth may be short, so I am very glad that we were able to get started this past April.

Rob takes a shot every day. He has grown almost 2 inches and gained 9 lbs since starting it. He began at 4'10" and 80 lbs, and now is almost 5' and 89 lbs. They predict his final height may be 5'8" or 5'9". Without the growth hormone, they did not think he would reach 5' or much beyond 5'.

I strongly encourage you to see a pediatric endocrinologist. JRA is well known to cause growth issues, and at age 12-1/2 time is of the essence. Also, it takes a while sometimes to get insurance approval, etc, as growth hormone is quite expensive. Feel free to email me privately if I can be of further help. By the way, Rob gives himself his own daily injections and does fantastic with them. The pen device system they have is easy to use and designed that most children can handle it themselves.

DEar thanks so much for your reply and info. it is very important for me to get this info now because I feel our pediatric rheumy is not being aggressive enough dealing with s short stature. I am afraid if we wait too long the window of oppurtinity will be gone. I am going to make a phone call tomorrow and will also show my husband your note. thanks again, Jane (ryan 12 systemic jra ) p.s. what type of arthritis does your son have ?

Jane:I'll keep my fingers crossed that you can get into a pediatric endocrinologist soon.

My son has juvenile ankylosing spondylitis. It is a form of arthritis that affects joints and also tendons. Rob has problems with hips, knees and his back. JAS is famous for affecting the spine, and causing a lot of back problems into adulthood.

Anyway, please let me know if I can be of any further help, and do keep us posted! and Rob 14 JAS

GP said the tube in the right ear is allowing it to drain while the drain in

the left ear seems to be plugged. Guess I will have to go back to the ENT

and get it opened. The GP changed my antibiotic today. Hopefully, I will

be better soon.

Hi Jane,

I really hope your problems with ear and sinus infections clear up with your new

antibiotics. Before I had ReA for the first time in 2002 I had never had ear

problems (or any health problems in general come to think of it!). However,

since the ReA I have had numerous severe inner ear infections, acute pharyngitis

and a lot of inflammation which the ENT specialist just couldn't explain. I

don't know if you have had this done already, but the only thing that helped me

was having grommetts (sorry, probably the wrong spelling) fitted in my eardrums.

It has helped enormously, and now I only get outer ear infections which are much

easier to manage, and much less painful and debhilitating. I was sure from my

own experiences that all of these strange infections are due to the ReA, but

after your posts, and those of others, I am even more convinced. I feel for

you, and really hope you get better soon,

Hello, jane,

Im sorry you aren't hearing as you'd like with your ci. I have a

feeling that, perhaps, your ci center didnt give you the full story BEFORE you

had

the implant. Or, perhaps, you misunderstood. Whichever, what you are

experiencing is the normal course that hearing again takes. I hpe you do not

give up

and read a lot here on this forum. You will see that this doesn't come easily

for most of us and its rewards are there for the taking - in time. Good luck.

Our lives have changed so much as a result of our lapbands that we truly are excited, happy, and very, very positive about our experiences. Does that mean everything is perfect? Well, no. That isn't possible, actually. We all have had various issues that we have had to learn to live with. The hunger during the early weeks after surgery, the cravings that our brains still deal with sometimes on a daily basis...all of these things are sometimes problematic. But, then, we look at the numbers on the scale moving down, we are able to sit in a chair and cross our legs rather than just our ankles, we can walk through turnstyles without turning sideways, we can reach to not only trim but polish our toenails, we can reach down to tie our shoes without needing an oxygen tank when we sit back

up. We can lay on the floor and feel our ribs sticking out further than our stomachs and eventually we can lay on the floor and feel our hip bones sticking out further than our abs. We can move our car seats forward and our stomachs don't touch the steering wheel. We can walk for a good distance without becoming winded. We can play with our children. Our children's arms will wrap all the way around our middles in a wonderful hug. We can make healthier choices when we really focus on what our goals are. We can RUN and CROSS THE FINISH LINE 2 MILES LATER! How can we NOT be positive??? Look, I'm not trying to hide anything at all. It is basically a state of mind. If you want to find negative, it will be there for you. I could talk about the horrible experience I had with one of my fills in Mexico. Was it the doctor's fault? I honestly don't think so because

everything was fine until later that afternoon/evening. I could tell you all about the horrible experience I had getting, not one, but two unfills as a result of that fill that was too tight. In fact, I could harp on the fact that I have been dealing with an infection that has been draining constantly since October as a result of one of those unfills. I could complain about having to go next week to have my port removed for a while until my infection clears up. I could complain that I have to go back again early this summer to have a new port put in. I could. But, I won't. There is no guarantee on anything that you have done. Like I mentioned in a post a couple of weeks ago, I had to have a root canal and a crown put on at one time. Well, 3 years later I had to have that crown replaced because is cracked and came out. I paid $400 for the first crown. I had to pay $600 for the replacement crown. I

don't recall anyone saying, "Well, maybe you should have never had that first crown put in." but people automatically want to say I shouldn't have had the band put in since I am now having to have my port removed. How insane is that??? Colleen, I realize I got a little long winded and perhaps it is a little overload for you but you just have to understand where we are all coming from. Our lives have changed so much. You know we used to wake up and not always see the silver lining but now, because we are much lighter on our feet, we wake up, bound out of bed ready to face the day, and we can't help but smile. You too will go through this incredible metamorphasis and then you will understand. Please keep reading and please keep asking questions. That is what this board is for....we are all here to help one another through the tough times but also to celebrate the joys with each

other and those just happen to be much more prevelant! I left a message Friday with my pcp but he won't be in until Monday. So, all I can do this weekend is wait.....Now, I wish that all I had done was sit on my fat butt at home.
