, i had asked my doctor to remove cage because that is what i thought was

causing the pain. He would not do it and pain turned out to be fibromyalgia.

The pain patch is

Duragesic. I was told not to take generic because it is dangerous. I also take

oxyir for breakthrough pain. Hope

Marsha you should look into the Lyrica and Baclofen I take that along with

the oxy ( 2 in the morning, 1 during the day 1 at night ) and the percocet for

breakthrough pain up to 4 during the day. I usually take the valium at night

to help me sleep. I was taking Amytriptolene put it gave me real bad

nightmares some times my wife would find me having conversations with my dead

father??

The first two work great for the fibro especially the pain and burning

sensation in my feet!!

know what medicine it actually releases? Not like lidoderm patch that only

relieves pain where it hits the skin, I assume, right?

Staci, I too am on durgesic patches and just had an indepth conversation

with my primary about addictions, dependency, and how exactly these

patches and pain meds are working for me.

The lidoderm patches are really designed for topical type of pain, not

deep pain, their kind of like lidocain or novacain but meant for the skin.

Durgesic is a narcotic pain med in patch form to create an even release

over a 72 hour time period, my vicodin is for the break through. I thought

with all the talk about addictions etc., that I was to rely on the patches

as little as possible. Untrue. My Dr. would rather up my dosage of patch

as it's easier to " hold down " the pain rather than " push " down the spikes.

If that makes sense to you?!

Because I was trying to go 4+ days inbetween usage of the patches, he

refilled my original dosed patch, and I'm to use them faithfully every 72

hours with the vicodin as last resort only for breakthrough. If at that

point I'm still experiencing the pain that I have been we will up the

dosage of the patch, not increase the amount of the vicodin. The other

thing he finally did was perscribe a sleep aide because of course I'm not

sleeping any longer than 2-4 hours at a time with all the pain.

Just my experience and $.02.

May I ask what he prescribed for sleep? I finally tried the sleep aid my dr

gave me and it kept me up all night! He said, maybe you need to take it a

while to get used to it…well since I sleep so little I am afraid to have any

more sleepless nights but I didn’t want anything addictive for sleep. I

tried the rozerem. I just don’t want something that I am so conked out that

if my kids need me I cant get up.

gave me and it kept me up all night! He said, maybe you need to take it a

while to get used to it…well since I sleep so little I am afraid to have any

more sleepless nights but I didn’t want anything addictive for sleep. I

tried the rozerem. I just don’t want something that I am so conked out that

if my kids need me I cant get up.

Hiya JP,

I was prescribed Ambien time released 12.5 mg. It has two types of

medication, one to help fall asleep and one to keep you asleep. It's new

enough I haven't done the homework as to active ingredients. What I do

know is this....most over the counter sleep aids have medications not

originally created for sleep issues, but when in larger doses they induce

sleep. When taken in less quantities they produce insomnia type reactions.

I tried Lunesta(sp) holy cow when they talk about unpleasant taste as a

possible side effect.....yikes, it was an all day affair, just about the

time the taste subsided, it was bedtime again. As far as the addiction

issues, I can't address them yet if ever. If getting enough sleep knocks

down my pain and stress issues enough for me to get off some of these pain

meds, I'll take the sleep medication over the pain meds. My Dr. prescribed

30 with a refill, but suggested that I try to practice better " sleep

hygiene " . My trouble is not necessarily falling asleep(because I was using

one of my alloted vicodin to go to sleep) but staying asleep because of

the pain. His instructions were, try these for about 4-5 nights, going to

sleep at the same time every night....very hard here with owning a bar and

grill, 15 yr old twins, the grandson, etc., etc., etc. and then try a

night or two without, hoping I will create correct " sleep hygiene " . We'll

see...I'll keep you posted. I haven't started them yet as the last week

the bar dictates 2:00-2:30am closing and with other Dr appts early in the

am's I have to be up too early.

I have had great results with Ambien and Ambien CR - either one - been

on them for years - I do take one Xanax and one Vistaril with it and of

course a Vicodin - but I would not sleep without the Ambien - and I

guess you get used to them - but they let you dream - which is the main

reason that the older meds for sleep where so dangerous for extended

The Duragesic patch is for Fentanyl and you change the patch every 3

days. By the 3rd day I am having to take some vicodine to help with

the pain. The patch come in different strenghts.

From the WebMD site:

(Fentanyl patch should be used only for ongoing pain that requires

strong narcotic pain medications at all times for an extended period

and for pain that cannot be relieved by quick-acting narcotics (for

use as needed) or non-narcotic pain relievers.)

I think that you would know if you are addicted or

not.

My Dr. started me out on Loritabs, then he went to

Norco's and finally to Percocet. The percocet

bothered my stomach and made me feel loopy in the

morning. So, now I am at Loritabs again. I take 3-4

10/500mg a day. I never exceed more than three in any

one day. I have met people that are taking 10-20 a

day. I can't even imagine that. If you think that

you are addicted, taper off for a week and see if you

have any withdrawl symtems.

I take muscle relaxants to go to sleep. They knock out cold for maybe 4 hrs.

Then sometimes i sleep, sometimes i don,t. When i get back i am going to ask my

pain doctor about the date rape drug for sleeping. It was recommended by on on

fibro doctor who was on my trip. Marsha

I take Ambien. You can take 5mg or 10mg. I have been on it a long time

because of Fibro. However, I have stopped it for weeks at a time

just to see if I could. No cravings or anything, but just no sleep, like

before I ever took anything.
