JP, I had spine fusion in late 2003. I just had

c-spine surgery May 1st. I have been on vicodin since

2003. I have never taken more than 5 of the 5/325 in a

day. I understand that still is a low dose? I at times

only take 2. The meds still work for me, not like the

horror stories you hear? My Dr says the reason it

still works, is that I take it for the right reason.

Many times since 2003 I have not taken ANY for days

and I have not had ANY withdrawal symptoms? I don't

know about others out there. Don't know if I'm a lucky

one. I still feel blessed in many respects! Bill

Funny because when I asked what she recommended….she said, tens unit

(useless), psychotherapy with a pain specialist (uh, oh, I didn’t realize

that my pain specialist was also a therapist…and why did he put on pain

meds?) or yoga – I can even get down to put my shoe on and off (now where

flip flops everywhere) so how would I do yoga????, and I think she said

imaging….I was amazed that this is what is offered to people in severed

pain? I would be SO nasty to my kids, no patience, wouldn’t want to go

anywhere or talk to anyone – not only the pain but then the depression from

long term pain and just plain tiredness that comes from the constant nerve

pain over and over like labor that never ends!!

JP, i take pain meds. i cannot conduct my active life without them. aside

from residual back issues after my surgery a year ago may, i have

fribromyalgia as a result of the surgery. fibro is extremely painful. i also

have a

cyst on L4-L5 on the left side that radiates pain down my leg. and i need knee

replacements. i have a wonderful pain doc. he put me on pain meds and then

moderates them. he gives the most accurate pain shots. he is amazing. i

am now able to work out on a regular basis, and walk for miles. i can stand

up straight. what has really saved me is my Chinese masseuse. She barely

speaks English. She was trained in China and she gives a fierce pressure

point massage. My knees are so much better. i can climb stairs without

holding

on now. There is hope. i feel pretty good. But this has all been a process

that took place over a year and i work very hard to make myself better.

I have had Firbromyalgia for 10 years, and spinal problems started 15 years

ago. I'm

supposed to go for another MRI, and I was going to go today, but cought a

cold and

am coughing too much to lie still for an MRI. When I called to cancel, the

woman

told me she just had another cancellation from a man with the same thing,

and she

just got over it after 10 days of coughing.

Hi there:

I had to respond to this question. Currently, I take Oxycontin, Oxy IR, which

is Percocet without the Tylenol, Demerol, Soma and Xanax. I do not worry about

addiction for one reason... I am in pain. Those of us with chronic pain may

become dependent on our meds, but that is not the same as being an addict.

Let me explain what I mean. If you have a car with power steering, that car

needs power steering fluid to function to it's optimal level. Without the

fluid, the car will still run, the wheel will still turn, but the vehicle will

be extremely messed up! The wheel will be sluggish and hard to turn! The car

is dependent on that fluid for it's optimum performance, just as I am dependent

on my pain meds for mine.

the line crosses from dependence to addiction when a person takes a medicaiton

for psychological reasons, or when a person who is legitimately in pain uses

more of the drug than is prescribed.

I would not worry about taking meds like Percocet if it is truly helping your

pain. If you are concerned about addiction, let your doctor know... Thousands

of people all across the world use meds for pain and most are not addicts. The

addicts give the rest a bad name.

people on this site suggested it was fibromyalgia when i put the symptoms

out there. i then had it confirmed by a rheumatologist. there are a lot of

good web sites out there about fibro. just try googling fibromyalgia.

I guess I keep thinking I will get better and now that I know it is an

infection, hopefully the pain will start to subside and I wont need it. I

do worry tho that I am already need them. I tried to not take them

yesterday, had heart palpitations for a while last night – course I just got

the picc line in too and then the pain was worse last night and today by a

lot! So I guess I need them, but I need to continue as I was and take as

needed…I just hope the as needed is less and less- don’t get me wrong, I

still have my other pain but I have functioned great with injections and

then just a little pain med in between the injections so I know I will

always need a bit but I definitely prefer the only every 3 months to over

and over.

Oh and I have hope that there may even be a procedure that could help or

cure my sciatica. The last dr had mentioned a muscle release.

I guess I keep thinking I will get better and now that I know it is an

infection, hopefully the pain will start to subside and I wont need it. I

do worry tho that I am already need them. I tried to not take them

yesterday, had heart palpitations for a while last night – course I just got

the picc line in too and then the pain was worse last night and today by a

lot! So I guess I need them, but I need to continue as I was and take as

needed…I just hope the as needed is less and less- don’t get me wrong, I

still have my other pain but I have functioned great with injections and

then just a little pain med in between the injections so I know I will

always need a bit but I definitely prefer the only every 3 months to over

and over.

Oh and I have hope that there may even be a procedure that could help or

cure my sciatica. The last dr had mentioned a muscle release.

jp, i would also like to add that i have a history of addiction going back

many, many years ago. i have been drug free for that many years up until the

surgery. now i take the pain killers. according to prescription. i do not

worry about addiction to them. i am in intense pain. the drugs reduce the

pain to the point where i do not want to die, i can work and i can have some

fun. before my pain doctor put me on the pain meds, i lay on the couch and

couldn't get off the couch.

Thanks for your response…I have discussed it with my dr many times, he knows

my concern and does address it each time, I have a real problem and not to

let it keep me from taking something that allows me to at least function a

little in my household and not kill everyone in sight. It was just very

jolting for my sister in law, a doctor- she does consulting for drug rehab-

to tell me that so many people don’t see it coming and with the current

situation, now that I know for sure it is an infection in my joint, I hope

that it will eventually subside and it actually scares me about stopping all

together…will I actually go thru withdrawal or will I naturally be able to

take less and less as my pain subsides. She just really scared me. I don’t

know what the future holds, I do know that I cannot function at all without

some pain meds but I hate the thought of being an addict…you are right tho,

being dependent and having a legitimate reason is not the same as addiction,

thank you for the reassurance!!

Wow good analogy!! Wow that is so me, wake up, that steering wheel is locked

up solid til the “steering fluid” takes effect!!

I had to respond to this question. Currently, I take Oxycontin, Oxy IR,

which is Percocet without the Tylenol, Demerol, Soma and Xanax. I do not

worry about addiction for one reason... I am in pain. Those of us with

chronic pain may become dependent on our meds, but that is not the same as

being an addict.

Let me explain what I mean. If you have a car with power steering, that car

needs power steering fluid to function to it's optimal level. Without the

fluid, the car will still run, the wheel will still turn, but the vehicle

will be extremely messed up! The wheel will be sluggish and hard to turn!

The car is dependent on that fluid for it's optimum performance, just as I

am dependent on my pain meds for mine.

the line crosses from dependence to addiction when a person takes a

medicaiton for psychological reasons, or when a person who is legitimately

in pain uses more of the drug than is prescribed.

I would not worry about taking meds like Percocet if it is truly helping

your pain. If you are concerned about addiction, let your doctor know...

Thousands of people all across the world use meds for pain and most are not

addicts. The addicts give the rest a bad name.

how long did it take them to figure out it was fibromyalgia.... because this has

been getting worse and worse over the past 16 uyrs and they cant figure it out

but then again noone has set me up an appt with a rheumatologist yet... and

thats who determines it right?

I have a very close friend that went from being a traveling nurse working a

ton of hours, super mom etc and then suddenly started with ibs and lost

80-90 lbs. and went thru tons of testing and two years later is non

functioning, in constant pain, foggy brain, tremors, falls sometimes, I have

convinced her to see my infectious disease doc….i believe she has late stage

lymes. The trouble I have with fibro is ….how do you take a perfectly good

functioning person and turn them to an invalid without any explanation?

Does your doctor say that this is secondary to something else? Do you have

other symptoms than pain? I have met others that said it was post lymes

fibro and that there is a big investigation now that it may be linked to

lymes or another bacterial infection.

Do you take meds? How do you get relief. She feels totally without any

hope and I FEEL for her. On the lymes test she had 68 out of 70 symptoms.

Any thoughts on that?

people on this site suggested it was fibromyalgia when i put the symptoms

out there. i then had it confirmed by a rheumatologist. there are a lot of

good web sites out there about fibro. just try googling fibromyalgia.
