I reluctantly used Ensure for several days before my last surgery,

reluctantly because I did not care for the taste, but I think it helped.

Judy,

If the doc means FULL-liquids then you can have soups, milkshakes etc. I

have a liquid protein drink that I use called Spiru-Tein. You could blend

it up in the blender with a banana like someone else said. I think soups

are your best bet.

If the doc says CLEAR-liquids then it can only be stuff like Jell-O,

bullion, clear soups, etc.

I would double check if I were you.

Hi Judy:

May I suggest you contact the dietitian at the hospital for information on what you can and cannot have prior to your surgery. They are a great source for recommending what you can have. I was given a list of things I could have. I found that most helpful as I went through the phases just before and post surgery.

There is a difference in what is recommended for liquid and clear liquids.

Warmest Regards,

Joanne

Dear Judy:

Do ask your doctor for specific examples on what to eat and drink and what

not.

Before a scope, my doctor told me to drink anything without pulp or other

“floating stuff” which could stay in the esophagus.

I could eat or drink only CLEAR liquids: Boost, Ensure or similar energy

drinks, clear juices (like apple juice), clear broth (without parsley flakes

or stuff floating in there), milk, milkshakes (just milk and ice-cream, no

strawberry pieces or other particles), jell-o, puddings.

Plan ahead what you want to eat or drink these 2 days. Than call your doctor

and double check if it is OK. I got tired of all the sweet juices, boosts

and milkshakes (for the calories and nutrition), so make sure you get also

some salty stuff like chicken broth and beef broth.

With the best wishes, Tanja

Before a dilation the doctor said clear liquids, broth, tea, jello. No coffee, milk, no Ensure, shakes, etc. Weins <rubgood2001@...> wrote:

The reason most people go on a clear liquid diet pre-op is because if there

is any food stuck in the esophagus, it can cause aspiration pneumonia if it goes

into the lungs during anesthesia or procedures that are performed to diagnose or

treat achalasia.

I called the doctor's assistant and asked her to clarify the liquid

diet 48 hours prior to surgery. She said only liquids with no food

particles in it. I will do broths, clear jello (no red)and Ensure.

I've never had Ensure but I know I don't like it. lol Also, apple

juice sounds good.

Thanks for all the advice, comments, etc. I love this board because

I get more answers here than at the doctor's office. (I do check

with the doctor though on issues that could be controversial)

I was interested in seeing that you had the surgery in

2000. How has your experience been since then? I had

surgery last June and still have noticeable difficulty

swallowing when I eat, although not nearly as bad as

before the surgery. I don't know if the fact I had no

peristalsis in the esophagus is a factor or not. I

will appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks,

Don

Happy New Year to All:

I understand exactly what is saying about the ride in the ambulance to ER. I found myself in a similar situation in the earlier stages of my "A" diagnosis. I was home alone on night, had horrible, excruciating, terrible "gas" pains. I wallowed on the floor, jumped up and down, paced, prayed, did every conceivable thing I could think of to get rid of the pain. All to no avail. I went to the kitchen trying to find more medication, anything I could get my hands on, and I too found myself on the floor. I had passed out from the pain!

Long story short ...(it has been written here before) I had my myotomy in September of 2001 and have not looked back.

, there is a book out called "Smoothies" that I found to be useful in making drinks. Also I put instant mashed potatoes in with bullion. For some reason the properties in instant potatoes are more digestible than regular potatoes.

Wishing all of you/us who suffer from this disease comfort and relief in 2002. That thought bring me to another point. If one has had the surgery or whatever (dilation, botox, etc.) and are now not suffering, are we be considered ex "A'rs" or is it ... Once an "A" always an "A"?

Warmest Regards,

Joanne (formerly of MI now in CO)

Welcome to the group. As for the pains been their done that! You have my

sympathy. When your doctor mentioned that your " E " Was not to dilated what

this means is that your " E " has not stretched to much(Believe me this a good

thing)What happens is that as your " A " progresses your " E " can sometimes

become a food pouch and stretch to accommodate the food that can not go

down,So by it not being to dilated really does help when you have your

Hellers(I could not believe how large mine had stretched last time I had a

Barium swallow test done.To be honest it was quite frightening)

As for your anxiety about having the procedure done this is only human but I

have had it and although it was unsuccessful the operation and recovery

really was not that bad and is less painful than the later stages of " A " So

my advice would be to have it done whilst you have caught it at an early

stage.

Keep us all posted and the best of luck our thoughts are with you.

Take care

.

Hello and Happy New Year to All!I am still a newbie to this group, waiting for a second diagnosis from UCSF after ph and motility testing a couple of weeks ago. I feel lucky after reading some of the postings that at this point I can still get liquids down (no solids, no lumpy soups, etc.), and do not have the regurg that some have. I can feel it getting tighter in there, sometimes even my thicker drinks (like Ensure) feel like they might come back up and it is a struggle to get it down. It has ben a little over a month since I have had any solid foods and I am wondering if anyone has found some great recipes for soups, protein shakes, etc. To complicate things, I am lactose intollerant and have found that foods I would be able to get down seem to be high in dairy. Any suggestions would be wonderful! Also, not sure if this is related, but instead of a limo ride on New Years Eve, I had an ambulance ride to the ER after fainting in my home with horrible lower abdominal pains. I thought I was having bad gas pains (too much dairy?) and the next thing I knew I was waking up on the floor. After X-rays, blood and urine tests, the ER said it must be gas pains, gave me a Mylanta cocktail (with other meds in it) and sent me home. Today my GI had my taking some stool tests, from which I am waiting those results......anyone else experience this? In my mind I fainted from being weak due to lack of food and nutrition and the pain of the cramps got the better of me.Sorry to be long winded here. I am intolerant to lactose, sucrose and possibly maltose, all double sugars. I

believe the intolerances may have been caused by bromide poisoning, at least,

the intolerances followed a 7 year bout of bromism. Gas in the adomen was very

painful. The GI tract was very inflammed and parts of the tract would adhere

together trapping the gas in between. Massage of the abdomen, rolling on the

floor, vibrator, etc would eventually break one of the adhesions releasing the

gas to escape either up or down. When the bromism was discovered it took two

months to lower the bromide level to a safe level and then another two months to

discover lactose intolerance, and another two months to discover sucrose

intolerance. And a total of about a year to reduce the GI inflammation to safe

levels. I believe my achalasia started at about the same time.

I was addicated to sugar and it took about two months to get over my addication.

I avoid any sugar, or sugar subsitute, to avoid developing a craving for sugar.

In my particular case I avoid any acid foods to control my achalasia and I take

tums, plus 10 minuites of mild hyperventilation, to bring my blood into the

alkaline side which thens opens up my cardia valve at the bottom of the

esophogus. Some people may be too alkaline and they may require an acid (cola

syrup), others may require a medication (arginine) that connects blocked nerves.

I use Slimfast every few weeks just for added nutrition it seems to work.

Also I use a product called MELTLETS for pain relief,I don't know about the rest of you but if I had a headache or another pain I would take regular pain killers but could not swallow them and they would come back up after a little while. With this product they are self-dissolving tablets and they come in different flavours and contain Ibuprofen.

All the best

I drank Slim-Fast all the time... tastes better than Boost and Ensure (to me, at least) and is cheaper and available in a wider variety of flavors.

The nutritional value of Slim-Fast is the same as Boost and Ensure.

Ask your doctor for a list or consult a dietitian (spelling). I

found this link on google, this is pretty comparable to what I had

during that liquid phase...

Hi Jan

Thanks for that, really appreciate your advice did you get Fortisip

on prescription or can you buy it at the chemist I have been to

Tesco this morning and found Complan but I don't like milkshakes or

Hot chocolate so thats out. I have brought some more angel delights

and custarts and some childrens multi vitamins. I now weigh in at

about 6 stone 3lb so I have managed to put a pound on since Weds but

I should hope so I hadn't eaten anything for nearly three days.

I don't know if you have been following my messages on the site but

I went for the barium on Wednesday and that was a real saga the

radiographer asked me to lay face down on the table and he started

to tilt it downwards well the barium started to come back up again

and they had to stop.

He said going on the barium x-rays I have a very excesive rolling

hiatus hernia that has gone through my diaphrame and up along my E

and is narrowing my E and need an urgent operation to bring down the

stomach back into position.

So I have had an ultrasound that says Hiatus Hernia, an endoscopy

that says Achalasia and a Barium that say excessive hernia going

very high up into my chest that must have been there for a good few

years. Have been told I need to go for a CT scan I am waiting for an

appointment for the consultant should be in the next 2 weeks but the

way they were talking on Weds maybe sooner rather that later.

==>Coconut oil can cause diarrhea in some people because it helps

your body clean out toxins; the body creates diarrhea to clean out

toxins. But you should start on a low dose and only gradually

increase it to minimize symptoms. Some people need to start on 1/2

to 1 tsp. 3 times a day.

==>Coconut oil is one of the simpliest foods you can ever eat. It

requires no digestive enzymes or bile for the body to absorb it and

it goes directly through the lymph system into the bloodsteam. Your

rash being inflamed is not a bad thing; the body not only detoxifies

through the skin but it also externalizes healing to the skin in

order to protect vital inner organs. Apply coconut oil to soothe it

but let it do it's thing. Inflammation means the body is sending

more blood to the area to help it heal.

==>Hi Elyse. It is good to hear from you. You can safely stay on that

kind a liquid diet a couple of weeks, sometimes more. You can start

adding pureed cooked foods anytime, and then gradually add more solids.
