I have had the pain on the right side and very painful to push on it. The

one doctor who I don't see anymore said there should be no pain there. Ok so

there isn't suppose to pain there so why is there? She is the doctor who

treated me like I did a bad thing because I went to the Mayo Clinic and she

did not like it.

The left pain is there also. I woke up today with a bad right shoulder and

back pain. I swept the floor last night and I could hardly move and then I

washed the dishes and the my back was sore I couldn't lay on it.

But as the doctor I had said there should be no pain.

Geri & Elena; I have also been told by a Dr you do not feel pain from

the liver. So what I thought was discomfort of the liver remained a

mystery & I never had the complaint again for which I am thankful. I

hope you are as lucky.

Elena,

So many organs are affected when there are liver problems. I've had a pain

in my left side (not the one under my ribcage, but at my waist) for years

and no one has been able to figure out why. Since it's the same place

where I had severe pain for a kidney stone, I was tested over and over to

see if fragments were left after lithotripsy, but nada! No reason. The

pain is just there for me to live with. It's become one of my nasty little

companions and we live together uneasily.

Elena,

Though I've never had tenderness in the liver area, my doctors must have

thought it was possible (and still do) since they always poke and prod and

ask me if it's painful. It never is. Quite a few people in this group

mention problems with their gallbladders and mine also stopped functioning

at one point, though there was nothing wrong with it. Apparently when your

liver is damaged, it affects the function of the gallbladder and bile

ducts. What does your doctor say can be done about the " sludge " ?

Take care,

Geri

I've had a sleep disorder for a couple of years and since long before I was

diagnosed with AIH. One doctor did tell me that it goes with liver disease

though I wonder how? My problem is that I don't go to bed at night and I'm

at my most alert in the early morning hours, even when I get to bed at 5 or

6 AM, I still rarely get more than 5 or 6 hours sleep. Not too surprising

that I'm tired too much of the time. I've tried a variety of meds for

sleeping and they've made me dizzy but they don't make me sleep.

I've only had pain in my mid-upper chest recently. The pain on my left

seems to be shifting to the center. Kind of like politics, huh? Whatever

it is, I have a hunch the cause has been there all along but I didn't feel

it because I was taking more pred than I am now.

Elena,

The new Consumer Reports magazine that we received in today's mail had a

precaution about herbal remedies. It warned that there is presently no

regulation at all and that many of them could be very dangerous. Since

they aren't required to keep records, the public usually doesn't know about

the hazards until people start getting very sick or even dying. Just

something to think about. I know that many people strongly believe in the

benefits of alternative medicines, but when it comes to trying to treat a

potentially very dangerous disease, it's no time to experiment.

Leona,

It figures that if an organ is inflamed or under pressure due to fluid

retention, it would be sensitive. Maybe the liver itself doesn't hurt, but

clearly something hurts many of us in that area. I'm grateful I haven't

had that problem and lucky you, that your pain went away by itself.

Take care,

Geri

I too have had tenderness sort of a dull type of discomfort. Not all

the time it comes and goes. Not always the same spot either.

Geri,

All the doctors seem to say that the liver can cause no pain. I wonder how

they would fair if they felt the pain some of us go through with this

disease. I would question that their theory of no pain coming from the

liver is actually fact.

Elena,

I was told originally that I had " sludge " in my gallbladder and that it

should be removed. That is when everything went wrong, the doc clipped the

bile ducts and bile leaked internally. Other docs since told me I should

never had had my gallbladder out at all. My liver area is always tender

too. I suffer extreme pain most of the time. When probed by docs it

actually goes into like a spasm and is extremely painful. That is why I say

that the liver can cause pain, contrary to what the docs say.

You are extremely lucky to be able to even contemplate doing aerobics. I am

Yep, its just like my case. I am always interested to know if someone

has a similar case to mine what there lab results were, so i can

compare. What stage AIH are you? and what were your lab/biopsy results.

I still am not too sure what the sludge means. Im sorry you had to go

through all that. Having you gb removed all for nothing?!

Thanks for responding, and would love to hear your story.

Hi Elena,

Thanks for sharing your lab results with me. I'm sorry you're feeling so

badly! I wish they'd figure things out for you, so you can feel more

comfortable. I feel like it's a strange sensation not to know exactly

what's going on in my body.

I think your tactics for reducing bloating are perfect. I've been doing

this recently, and it seems to be helping. I hope you feel better soon....

Hi

Sorry it took so long to get back to you!

I understand how frustrated you feel, as I feel the same way. You want

to be fit, but its difficult to get the energy and motivation to

exercise. You do have a good idea though. Take walks, maybe even bike

rides in the park/beach it would be a great stress reliever and also

your not overly exerting yourself. Thank for telling my about your lab

results, mine are as follows:-

ANA 1:320

smooth muscle- 1:160

AST & ALT only slightly elevated

As you can see my lab shows mild elevations, which is so strange as i

feel pretty bad.

Bloating can be really uncomfortable. From what i understand, cutting

out salt and drinking lots of water will at least help the bloating.

Let me know how you are doing

Take care

Hi roselle

My GI wanted me on meds just because of the fact i had pain. And when

the hepatologist was feeling my liver he was checking to see whether it

hurt. So it must mean something. Today my pain is worse. Its more like

sharp pain over my right side. I think its because i was bad over the

weekend and had a few beers. I did it because I was angry at all the

doctors and just upset over the whole thing.

I am embaressed to tell you what stage of disease i am in My dr. tells

me very little.I don't know. But I am going to find out. All I ever get

is told if my labs are normal or not. She is very abrupt.

marlene,

I know what you mean.....my Dr knows that I joined this group and I go armed

with all kinds of questions and all he ever says is " the internet can be a

scary place " . Is there any way you can tell at what stage you are in? How

is this determined? Ask Geri maybe she knows.

Don,

My biopsy didn't state anything other than " chronic hepatitis with marked

fibrosis " . Chronic hepatitis with moderate periportal and lobular activity

and severe septal fibrosis. What does this mean?

The narrative from my biopsy gave mine as stage 3. My understanding is that

the amount of fibrosis and necrosis determines the stage. But...my memory

hasn't been the best lately...<g>

,

I didn't even know there was such thing as stages of AIH until months after

I was diagnosed with AIH and sent for my lab records. My doctors were also

very abrupt and dismissive. I felt that they couldn't get out of the room

fast enough and that they had no interest in answering any of my questions.

For months, everything I learned about AIH I learned through Internet.

Now I find that they're much more communicative and I wonder if it's

because I might sound like I know what I'm talking about. For all they

know, I'm seeing another doctor and not telling them, or have a doctor in

the family. If your doctor acts dismissive next time you're there, tell

her that you have some questions that need to be answered and if she

doesn't have time to answer them, you want to make an appointment for

another day when she will plan on taking the time. An article I read in

the Las Vegas paper even suggested taking a tape recorder in with you when

you see your doctor, explaining that you want to be sure you remember

EXACTLY what they say. (I wouldn't have nerve enough to do that, but I can

think of times I'd have loved to.) Bringing a close family member or

friend along also might help. One who won't hesitate to speak up for you

if necessary. It's amazing how doctors attitudes change when they aren't

alone with a patient.

Take care,

Geri

Sue,

The first time I asked my doctor about itching, his only comment was that

he'd heard that people with liver disease have a problem with that. Duh!

He's a Hepatologist and he knows very well that itching goes with liver

disease. Maybe he was worried that he'd encourage me to complain if he

reacted. I don't think I ever did get him to acknowledge the severe,

almost disabling fatigue I felt for a couple of months. However, he has

watched me for ascites and abdominal pain all along. When he wanted me to

have a colonoscopy I asked him if he'd ever had one. He said, " No, and I

hope I never do. " I can't figure out how any doctor can try to tell a

patient that they don't " really " feel pain. They're not psychiatrists,

they're medical doctors and should try to find out the reasons for

complaints, not assume that there is no substance to them.

Take care,

Geri

Geri, Thanks Now at least I don't feel so stupid. I see my Dr. in 2

weeks and will ask her about the stage thing and bone density test.
