Guest guest Posted June 22, 2006 Report Posted June 22, 2006 Fran, I have increased my fat intake quite a bit, but maybe not enough. I'm not ready to increase my coconut oil anymore yet because of die- off. (I've done enemas but I can't do them everyday). According to my height, I should be having from 105 - 175 grams of fat per day. I'm having 4 teaspoons of coconut a day and 3 teaspoons of fish oil a day, that's 98 grams so far. I use butter and olive oil on vegetables, in cooking etc. I figured that would more or less double the amount bringing me within range of what I should be having. (How do you measure grams of butter)? I'm confused about the amounts of fat. If we're aiming to have 5 TBSP of coconut oil, then that's 210 grams of coconut oil alone, not including fish oils or other oils, that would exceed someone's limit of how much fat they would have to take. How do you work it out? elyse On 22-Jun-06, at 9:17 AM, fgourd wrote: > I thought of two things: At one point, Bee posted to everybody that > the > reason some of us (yours truly included... :-) are constipated when > first on this diet is that we don't eat enough good fats. Guest guest Posted June 22, 2006 Report Posted June 22, 2006 Elyse, How are you figuring your grams of fat? According to Fitday.com 5TBS of coconut oil is 68 grams not the 210 you stated. You need to measure the amount of your foods in tsps,TBS, ounces, fluid ounces, cups or whatever and plug that into the Fitday program and it will give you the grams of fat, protein, and carbs for that food. Trying to figure it out any other way is going to throw you off completely and you are not going to get enough fat in your diet. This could be one reason you are having so many physical problems. Guest guest Posted June 22, 2006 Report Posted June 22, 2006 Uh oh, I thought one teaspoon of coconut oil was 14 grams, obviously I made a mistake. That's the thing about die-off and being a space cadet, you make mistakes like that. This means 1 TBSp is about 14 grams, so the 5 TBSP makes better sense to me know. This means, I'm getting only getting about 31 grams of fat from fish oil and coconut oil. Does that mean I need to make up the rest of the 74 - 144 grams with olive oil and butter? Guest guest Posted June 22, 2006 Report Posted June 22, 2006 I want to edit my last message - I know some fats will also come from the food I'm eating. On 22-Jun-06, at 12:19 PM, macedgeca wrote: > Does that mean I need to make up the rest of > the 74 - 144 grams with olive oil and butter? Quote

You'll be surprised at how quickly the fat can add up actually. Use FitDay and enter your food there. See how many grams of fat you're getting. If you're not getting enough, try adding more olive oil/butter to your veggies. I'll bet you anything that you'll have better success with bowel movements if you up your fat. in IN Quote
Guest guest Posted June 22, 2006 Report Posted June 22, 2006 Yes, I have tried out fitday and it does help to know how much fat is in eggs and other foods. Looking back on my entries the amount of fat I was having was within my range (lower end of it), but obviously I need more and I'll up it. Working this all out takes a lot of planning which is difficult for me to do. Thanks for the reminder to get fatty meats. I think this is fine for organic but I have some doubts on eating a lot of fats with non-organic. elyse On 22-Jun-06, at 12:55 PM, Wittekind wrote: > Choose fatty meats. Eat chicken with the skin on. Guest guest Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 Hi Elyse, I'm glad you got such a good answer from Ellen. For my part, I'm still overwhelmed by the fitday.com mesuring (my brain gets easily overwhelmed with (too-much-for-me) new information). No doubt I'll get it at some point. In the meantime, I do my best. I'm glad all the posts helped you. Fran Quote

I tend to take a long time to tackle a task, etc... I easily feel overwhelmed by them, because of brain fog (due to enviro. allergies). But I will call upon your knowledge, re: fitday, rest assure! :-) In the meantime, take good care, Fran :-) Quote
Guest guest Posted June 29, 2006 Report Posted June 29, 2006 Elyse, 1) If you are 5'7 " tall then your minimum fat intake should be 175 grams per day (maximum 246 grams). 2) It's really hard to judge how much fat you are getting from your protein sources because the amounts vary depending on whether it is eggs, fish, red meat, etc. 3) Fat sources are a little easier to judge since most are 12 to 14 grams per tablespoon. I would suppose that guess-timating your ratios is better than not doing anything BUT....your best bet is to use Fitday. If you use it daily it will get easier to understand. Are you guessing on your protein amounts too? Guest guest Posted June 29, 2006 Report Posted June 29, 2006 Elyse, I plugged some foods into my Fitday program and came up with the following: 1 oz chicken = 8 grams protein and 2 grams of fat 1 oz fish = 8 grams protein and 1 gram fat 1 oz ground beef (75% lean) = 4 grams protein and 7 grams fat (These numbers change it is leaner, like 80% lean or whatever...then there are fewer fat grams and more protein) 1 large egg = 6 grams of protein and 5 grams of fat So just choosing from those foods alone you would need to eat 10 eggs, or 7 oz of ground beef, or 50 oz of fish, or 25 oz of chicken to get 50 grams of fat from your protein sources. Also given that your ideal protein level based on your height should be 70 grams, you may not always be getting 50 grams of fat from protein sources. (Or you may be getting more than that) It really depends on what you are eating in a typical day. I know this can be confusing and difficult at times but just keep reminding yourself it is for your health. To get in the appropriate amount of fats, I often have my veggies swimming in butter or make veggie soup using a bone broth base and add extra butter to that. Or I add extra butter and coconut oil to the raw egg drink. I even add extra oil to my salads sometimes. Since I am limiting olive oil consumption I use half that and half coconut oil. Hope these figures and ideas help. Ellen ----- Original Message ----- From: " macedgeca " > Ellen, > I can't use fitday everyday right now. Guest guest Posted June 29, 2006 Report Posted June 29, 2006 I'd like to check on my fat intake, and would really appreciate it if someone could please check these figures for me, since I have been known to make mistakes :-) I'm 5'7 " which means I should be getting from 105 - 175 grams of fat per day. I tried to figure an average of how much fat I get from food (meat, eggs etc) which I think comes to approximately 50 grams a day. That means I still need 55 - 125 grams, which would translate to about 4 - 9 TBS that I still need to make up in coconut oil, butter, ghee and a little olive oil. Does that sound right? 4 - 9 TBS of additional fats? I can't be exact every day, I don't have a scale and fitday is still difficult for me to use, so I need to do it this way for now. Thanks, Elyse Quote
Guest guest Posted June 29, 2006 Report Posted June 29, 2006 Ellen, I can't use fitday everyday right now. I looked up how many grams of fat are in what I generally eat and made notes of that. I'm estimating protein to a degree because I don't have a scale, but also going by how much I can eat. I get really hungry, but then I can't eat much. It seems like what my body wants to do or is willing to do is hopefully about right. I would like to to work it out more exact, but I am limited and it's difficult for me to even cook and do everything I'm doing already. I'm having difficulty keeping up with all that I'm doing so far, and I can only do what I can do for the time being. So far, I've made a lot of changes and improvements, but my body hasn't caught up yet. I'm till struggling a lot with symptoms. Thanks for the fat calculations, obviously I erred. If approximately 50 grams of fat from food is correct, then I would need anywhere from 9 to 15 TBS of additional fat? I'm only having 2 TBS of coconut oil per day, so would the rest be better from butter and ghee or olive oil? There's been talk of olive oil inhibiting weight loss, I do need to lose weight. Guest guest Posted June 29, 2006 Report Posted June 29, 2006 Thanks Ellen, I based the 50 gram figure on mostly eggs and red meat, knowing that I would need more when I have chicken breast or fish instead, I couldn't eat 50 oz of fish or 25 oz of chicken! On those days I'd have to increase fat consumption, just trying to work out correct figures before getting to adjustments. Luckily, I don't have a problem with how to take the fat because I don't mind taking coconut oil or butter straight, just pop it in my mouth like a snack. Thanks again, Elyse On 29-Jun-06, at 10:28 AM, Tiger Lily wrote: > I plugged some foods into my Fitday program and came up with the > following: > 1 oz chicken = 8 grams protein and 2 grams of fat > 1 oz fish = 8 grams protein and 1 gram fat > 1 oz ground beef (75% lean) = 4 grams protein and 7 grams fat (These > numbers change it is leaner, like 80% lean or whatever...then there > are > fewer fat grams and more protein) > 1 large egg = 6 grams of protein and 5 grams of fat > > So just choosing from those foods alone you would need to eat 10 > eggs, or 7 > oz of ground beef, or 50 oz of fish, or 25 oz of chicken to get 50 > grams of > fat from your protein sources. > > Also given that your ideal protein level based on your height > should be 70 > grams, you may not always be getting 50 grams of fat from protein > sources. > (Or you may be getting more than that) It really depends on what > you are > eating in a typical day. > > I know this can be confusing and difficult at times but just keep > reminding > yourself it is for your health. > > To get in the appropriate amount of fats, I often have my veggies > swimming > in butter or make veggie soup using a bone broth base and add extra > butter > to that. You do not weigh out your food in grams, you enter the size of your serving in fitday and refresh the nutrients, and then you will get the grams of each food group; deduct fibres from total carbs. Guest guest Posted June 30, 2006 Report Posted June 30, 2006 No Bee, I was joking about the amount, it was a reply to a message to me about how much chicken I'd have to eat to get a certain amount of fat - obviously wouldn't do it that way :-) (I'm confused about the amounts, but won't try to have that much :-) On 30-Jun-06, at 4:50 PM, Bee Wilder wrote: > > ==>Elyse, if you ate 25 ounces of chicken that would equal from 138.5 > to 200 grams of protein???
