I, too, have had several kidney stones. Here's the scoop, in not quite

accurate medical terms, since I'm not a doctor. We don't absorb calcium

very well, which is why we are told to take several Tums per day. I stopped

doing that because my stomach felt fine and I eat yogurt every single day.

Not enough. Now, I am told to eat 2 tums 3 times a day.

That seemed strange, since my stones were made of calcium oxalate, which

made me think I had enough calcium. Wrong. It is the oxalate that is the

problem. Oxalates come in all foods, but especially in spinach, wheat germ,

chocolate. Our bodies need to balance the calcium and oxalates in our

kidneys to pee them out together. My urine tests show extremely low levels

of calcium and citrate and way, way too high in oxalates.

I now take a prescription drug to put more calcium and citrates into my

system. If I don't take them with at least 3 quarts of water per day, I get

wicked constipated. Fun, huh?

My PCP now has me set up for lab work again. He thinks I MAY be vitamin D

deficiant. If that's the case, the lack of vitamin D is preventing the

absorbtion of calcium. It's a balancing act.

What was really intersting is that when I was passing stones (or attempting

to, but they got caught in the ureter and I needed surgery to remove one) I

felt no pain. I felt crabby, had a fever, felt " bad " and wanted to sleep.

but no pain, so it made it difficult to diagnose what was wrong. An X-ray

showed the problem.

Whe the MGB is done, the Vagus nerve is cut so we don't register pain in

that area. My blood pressure was up because my kidney knew it hurt, but my

brain didn't know.

Feel free to call me if you want to. Have your urologist call Dr R. He is

very aware of this since I just talked to him at great length about it at

the Las Vegas picnic.

I'm sorry you had the pain. I guess I'm just lucky! I had a lot of

bleeding which was the real clue that somethingwas wrong. Because I had no

pain, even when the MD thumped on my back, they were afraid it may be

bladder cancer. I'm glad it was just stones, even though they aren't fun.

Tums or no tums, that seems to be the question. My urologists' instructions

changed once he knew I had a by-pass. That does cause malabsorbtion.

Hi all! I am now 4 weeks out and haven't had any issues, yet! I am

following Dr. P's instructions except for the yogurt! Can't stand

the stuff and have tried just about every brand and flavor!

Anyway, Dr. P said to take a 1200 mg of Calcium Citrate instead of

Tums. So I have been doing so. I take mine at night, because

calcium puts me to sleep! Doesn't do this for everyone! I also

take it with milk, as the vitiam D helps you absorb the calcium.

Hope this helps!

Hi ,

My wife had kidney stones too. Our family doctor, who we trust very

much suggested drinking a lot of water/coconut water as well to flush

out the stones. When required, he gave her intravenous fluid to force

the stone out.

An ongoing remedy for kidney stones, widely used in India is the

consumption of cooked (steamed and light fried/floured) banana stem.

These have a reputation for dissolving stones. It's eaten atleast 2-3

times a week along with our lunch or dinner, as an accompaniement.

Also adviced is refraining from certain foods which medical

practitioners will advice, such as meat, cabbage, tomatoes. However,

do get a cross opinion from experts.

Eating lots of watermelon or taking L-Citrulline may help.

The supplement L-Citrulline helps make the kidney tubules work more

efficiently. It also helps with liver detox.

I never had kidney stones, but as a diabetic I was having to break

sleep 4 or 5 times each night, which really harmed my ability to get a

good night's sleep. Since I have begun taking Citrulline, I break

sleep once a night, and sometimes get to sleep straight thru.

Very interesting herbal combo, Shalom. I will look into this. My spouse

suffers from large (and frequent) kidney stones, and it's no picnic.

Do you personally have any experience with using these herbs to treat

kidney stones? If not, does anyone else? I would really appreciate any

feedback on this combo that folks might provide. :)

If you take your Calcium in the form of Calcium CITRATE, you should be

fairly safe against kidney stones. Make sure it has the combo of Magnesium along

with Vitamin D.

Also, any individual D vitamin supplementation needs to be " dry " D3 in order

to be effective.

I started out with a gorgeous head of hair that women envied everywhere I

went. About 3-4 mos post-op it began falling out in handfuls. After about 8-9

mos it stopped falling out so easily, and I did grow some of it back, but now

it's fine and limp and my nails are paper thin. I am almost 5 yrs out.

I suggest you go to your local book store or GNC and pick up a (thick)

paperback book, " Prescription for Nutritional Healing " , 4th edition, by Phyllis

A.

Balch, CNC. If you start studying it NOW, you will avoid many vitamin/mineral

deficiencies in the future. There is a LOT of reading and things that may

not pertain to you at this time, but you'll be way ahead of the game if you, in

the very least, read up on the things we get labs drawn for - pay particular

attention to iron, calcium, zinc, copper, B-vites and Vit D.

I was also concerned about kidney stones since calcification problems run in my

family but I am glad to say I have not had the problem. Everyone is different

so it is very hard to predict how your body will react. Hair loss is an

individual thing. Be sure to get an annual dexa scan to check for

osteoporosis/osteopenia.

Hi,

I would like to know how common problems with kidney stones are after

MGB with the amount of calcium and protein intake we are suppose to be

taking.I hope to have the MGB next month and never had kidney stones.

Ido want to prevent osteoporosis and hair loss as much as possible.

Also does everyone that has the MGB have hair loss? I know it's suppose

Thanks for the info

The kidney stone problem doesn't seem to be very common. I've asked around a

lot, on this site and in person, and only foun a few other people. I think it

may have been my chemistry, maybe made a bit worse by te lack f absorbtion of

enough calcium and citrates after the MGB. Now that Ihave added Citracal and

have gone bck to the recommendation of yogurt daily, I haven't had an issue in

almost 2 years.

I also never lost any hair. I started taking fish oil as soon as we coud take

vitamins to help my dry skin and that helped skin, nails, & hair. I have a

thick, beautiful, shiny head of silver hair and I love it. I look great in that

little black dress now, too.

Go for it and get the MGB. Just be sure to follow all Dr R's recommendations

for vitamins, yogurt, protein and you'll be fine.Marilyn Morin

-Hi Dottie,

I had my MGB in April of 2000. In 2005, I had massive amounts of

kidney stones in both kidneys. Had to undergo Lithtripsy 3 times. I

discontinued the Tums & calcium pills I was taking every day,

increased my water intake even more & was just diagnosed, AGAIN, with 4

more stones in my left kidney. Once again, I had to undergo the

lithotripsy procedure just last week! My urologist says we have to wait

a bit longer for the stones to pass & then I go back the beginning of

June for blood tests to check my calcium & potassium levels, along with

a 24 hour urine test. Once those results are back,he plans on putting

me on some meds (lifetime!!!!) to help me from hopefully getting them

again.

I had follow up x-rays done today & then went to the Dr., but there is

so much gas in me that he could not see if there were any traces of

stone left or not. He says the gas is a result of the bypass. The only

way he could clearly see the stones was if I was to have another

catscan. But at $2100 a whack, he felt confident the stones were

destroyed & slowly passing thru (like grains of sand) Feel free to

write me anytime if you are curious about the results. I go back to the

Dr. on the 23rd of June. Don't mean to scare you off, just want

everyone out there to know what can happen. I plan on writing Dr. R

about this since I have now gone thru this ordeal 2 times now! Not fun!

I had lost 96 pounds with the procedure but have since gained back 30

pounds! I blame myself for some of the weight returning, but I have

exercised 4-5 times a week since then & it doesn't seem to want to

come back off. I am very frustrated right now. I have tried to be

healthy, but can't seem to prevent these illnesses from invading my

body. My immune system is alot weaker since having the bypass. I am

still glad I did it, but you do have to work hard at keeping the weight

off!!!!

Good Luck!

Hi,

I had never had kidney stones prior to MGB. I ended up in the hospital on my 1

year mgb b-day w/ stones--OUCH!! The urologist suggested that I decrease my

calcium supplementation & try to consume more from foods, as there is a higher

incidence w/ supplemental calcium (if they're calcium oxalate stones). I have

had one bout w/ them since. Just as a pointer, if you're worried about getting

kidney stones as an outcome of this surgery, try not to eat foods that are high

oxalate foods. If you do a search for a low oxalate diet you'll see the foods

that you should steer clear of. Surprising to a lot of people,

cranberries/cranberry juice are one of the biggest " offenders " that you should

NOT consume. Many people think that w/ any urological problem, you should

consume cran juice--but it's not the case w/ calc. ox. stones. As an

afterthought, I would endure kidney stones again and again (and yes the pain

really was worse than childbirth!), rather than go back to my former obese

self!!!

As for hairloss, I lost A LOT! Where my ponytail holder used to go around my

hair 2 times (3 if I really stretched it), after mgb it went around FOUR times!

I was amazed that I wasn't bald! I tried all of the remedies recommended by

those who have " been there " & it still just fell out. It stopped when I stopped

losing weight. And I'm back to 3 times around on the ponytail holder!

Osteoporosis...I recently had a DXA scan (bone density) which showed that I have

osteopenia in both my spine & hip (the 2 areas they measure). The

endocrinologist recommended that I bump my calcium intake back up & that should

do the trick. However, she first did a 24 hr. urine test to make sure she wasn't

setting me up for more kidney stones!

Hi Dotty,

I don't know how common kidney stones are, but I don't think you need to

worry about using the protein or calcium. While high protein diets can cause

kidney stones, most of us who use protein shakes drink either one or two per

day. This is about 30 grams of protein per shake, or 60 grams per day. This

amount is not considered a high protein diet, especially early on when you may

not be eating large quantities of meat and other protein rich foods.

You are more likely to form kidney stones by not taking your calcium. Most

stones are formed by oxalates. If you take calcium, the oxalates bind to the

calcium and are safely excreted. If the oxalates do not have the calcium to

bind to, that is when you may form kidney stones.

Hi Sue,

I'm sorry to hear about your problems with the kidney stones. I have two

floating around in there somewhere. They were there pre op so are not a result

of the MGB. They are non obstructive and my PCP gets an ultra sound every

four to six months to watch the situation. You said that you discontinued

your Tums and calcium. I seem to recall Dr. Rutledge sending out a post about

some research that said it was important to keep up the calcium supplements in

order to PREVENT KIDNEY STONES.

Dosn anyone else recall him sending out this info?

Please make sure you are taking the right kind of calcium! Not all calciums

I too have had a bout with kidney stones. Beware!!! I was not taking my

Tums. I never had indigestion or acid reflux so I thought that I did not need

them. My urologist informed me that we need the calcium to bind with the oxalate

so they both pass through the urine. I am diligent in taking my Tums now. Its

been 1 year since I have had the stones and so far I am ok. It was almost 5

years after MGB before I had a stone problem. And I also observed a whole

lot people in the urologist office with stones that have never had gastric

by-pass. A lot of people at a small practice!!

As for hairloss, I lost A LOT! Where my ponytail holder used to go around my

hair 2 times (3 if I really stretched it), after mgb it went around FOUR

times! I was amazed that I wasn't bald! I tried all of the remedies recommended

by those who have " been there " & it still just fell out. It stopped when I

stopped losing weight. And I'm back to 3 times around on the ponytail holder!

Osteoporosis.Osteoporosis.<WBR>..I recently had a DXA scan (bone density)

which showed that I have osteopenia in & hip (the 2 areas they measure). The

endocrinologist recommended that I bump my calcium intake back up & that should

do the trick. However, she first did a 24 hr. urine test to make sure she

wasn't setting me up for more kidney stones!

Why the " dry " D3? I get it from my doctor dry, but I also have it from the

vitamin store in a caplet with vitamin A.

Best regards,
