Hi Jennie

I have had the flu shot every year for 3 years now. My doc. Really strongly

recommended I have it, so I took her advise and I didn’t have any bad

reactions at all. The doc. Said that I could suffer very badly if I did

catch flu. Perhaps you should check with your doctor as everyone is

different and you may have a different reaction.

Hope you sort it out.

Best wishes

Subject: Flu Shot

Ok, quick question does anyone get a flu shot? I have never gotten one

before, because I rarely get sick. But do you think I should get one

now? Does Still's make you more easily sick with the flu and the like?

Plus with the steroid I know the immune system becomes weaker so I

would the flu shot end up making me sick instead?

Thanks for any advice you can give,

Jennie

My advice would be to PLEASE get the flu shot. About 3 weeks ago some BUG got

my other 2 daughters sick and eventually my husband and my youngest daughter

(sytemic JRA) and ME. We all recovered BUT let me share with you ...her

nightmare. By 23rd of september she still had a stuffy nose and cough. The

question was if we should not give her her humira shot that weekend. (she is on

humira, prednisone 5 tablets of methotrexate, naproxen etc, she is 5 but weighs

only 26 lbs and looks like 3! :()

That sunday we took her to the doctors (her amazing nurse, Amy Sharples from

UMASS) set up the appt. They thoroughly checked her our out (especially ruling

out strep) and ear infection. Then on monday she complained of ear pain.

Wednesday -Thursday she was screaming and crying. Now she has Stills ...so she

knows pains ...but her screams were as if someone was burning her. We

misunderstood the situation and thought she was irritating her throat with this

strange cry and thats why she couldnt eat. Her fevers were passing 104-105. In

the past increasing her prednisone took care of this but not this time.

Eventually she waws admitted in the hospital and along with a myriad of symtoms

an ulcer from her uvula down her esoghagus was discovered. SO my 5 year old

just spent over a week in the hospital. 3 IV's administering 14 drugs and Total

nutrition (not all meds on IV) ( Morphine round the clock plus on demand,

Toradol and tylenol for pain ...they started on antiviral

and antibiotics as well. She had impressively large lymph nodes and spleen

(ultrasound = splenomagaly) All the tests were negative. and she was sent home

today based on the fact that she is eating and taking her meds orally.

On her discharge papers it is ordered for her to take the flu shot. (she is

allergic to eggs)

Hope I was convinving... just got home this morning :)

,

Thank you for sharing with Jennie about your experience. I am in ville,

AR. I have just recently been diagnosed with Still's ( I've been suffering for

some time though). We have very similar climates. I go to Houston quite often

for conferences, etc. Did I understand that you are a RN? How long have you had

Still's? I am so glad to be able to be a part of this group to have support and

information. Thanks in advance for everything.

I also got the 5 year pneumonia shot last year.

It is my opinion from ,what I have read on your site that you should avoid

immunizations in that the labs making these vaccines are not totally careful and

do not really know from year to year what strain will hit any area; as well as

the possibility that the strain will mutate.......best to take your chances.

In 1991 I took a flu shot......got the flu from the shot( as did my mother and

my daughter) and I had one problem after the other for 3 years until I was

healthy again.....DO NOT TAKE THE FLU SHOT! ......tahe care...barbara

Flu shot

That time of year again and I'm wondering about flu shots. My husband

and I are in our mid fifties and never have received flu shots over

the years, and only occassionally got the flu and survived it.

Last year I got a flu shot and my husband didn't, neither of us got

the flu.

I'd like some opinion and advice on flu shots, not sure I want to get

another one. Thanks in advance for any advice.

IMHO...what's the point? The shot is never the current strain of flu. I know

it's a real revenue builder for Dr.'s offices, at least one was caught

administering sterilized water. Seems like they always create a panic about

there not being enough vaccine to go around. I don't trust um. C

In the past I've taken flu shots and they

worked for me. Granted I was in my late 30s a

and 40's when I did so. Prior to that I

was getting the Flu ever time it came around

and it would hang on for weeks.

The shots don't provide long term immunity and

you are taking the chance the lab work is good

and vaccine isn't somehow contaminated. Still

they do work though as one ages they are less

effective in older immune systems.

One thing I will suggest, it that vitamin D3

is an important supplement to take to

prevent or modify the course of the virus.

Flu season seems to come when the 25-OH-vitamin D

serum levels has dropped to near the lowest

point in the year. Vitamin D may also prevent

the immune system from over acting and causing

excessive inflammation in the lungs if you do

become infected.

Currently I take 4000 to 5000 IU of vitamin D3

per day during the fall and winter months.

I take less during the spring and summer, 1000

IU unless I spend all day inside then I count

it as a winter day.

I haven't had the flu since I started this.

Though I've had a couple of colds since I started my

vitamin D3 regimen. I started it in 2001 as

I recall.

Hello;

I am a new member and I have a question re. flu shots for those

having active flare ups with fevers.

I have been running a fever since mid July; I am wondering if I can

get my flu shot this year with a fever running. My dr thinks I could

have an auto immune disease now or a virus infection, or both. He is

running a bunch of tests trying to finally pin down a diagnosis for

me that none of my drs have found yet. He thinks my fever and other

symptoms are from possible auto immune disease and/or a viral

infection.

I have had flare ups since I was in my early 20s at least. And early

on my first dr who retired when she went blind at a young age always

told me not to get the flu shots whenever I am running a fever.

This was back in the late 80s early 90s.

Can a person have flu shots even with a fever as long as their dr

thinks it is OK to do so? I am on Ibuprofen 4oomgs 4 times a day for

the fever and joint/muscle pains I am having with this flare up.

When I get the flu I get very ill; so I hope I can get a flu shot

this year. *Last year I had a flu shot and was unlucky enough to get

the strain of flu that last years shot missed.

Thanks.

shot. I got mine today, and get one every year. The flu shot cannot

make you sick. The virus is killed, but your body still makes

antibodies to fight the virus. Some vaccinations other than the flu

shot are live viruses, and would be contraindicated with our immune

systems and medications.

Thanks for your advice. We have started taking vitamin D this year,

presently we're taking 2000 IU of 'Carlson' softgels per day.
