Guest guest
I am sorry this is so confusing, but the answers often depend on specific family circumstances. That is why some people pay Sherri or for their services...I am neither an attorney or an accountant, so I cannot be real specific about your situation. Here is an important piece of information in regard to our discussion of SSI, by Attorney and former IRS agent and former IRS attorney, Rubin: For shared expenses must take into account all, including mortgage and taxes. If the child's share is in excess of the SSI amount then they are being subsidized and still lose 1/3. Shared expenses is one method and flat room and board is the safer method when the shared amount would be higher then the SSI amount - but that is when the exemption and rent issue come in. Sherri stated it correctly. We have both seen parents getting burned by the shared expense method because if you use that method then they have the right to ask for all utility bills, homeowners insurance, real estate tax, phone, garbage, as well as food, etc. With the flat rent you don't have to disclose any of that. So correct that shared expenses means no tax issue, but beware of the computation. Ellen Garber Bronfeld egskb@... Guest guest
All I can say is I am so glad my son gets SSDI. I did not have to go through all this. I am his payee and they do not question where the money is spent. How can they question where the money goes?. How could such a small amount pay for a place to live all the utilities, clothes, food, health, toiletries, entertainment, etc? SSDI is more money why is SSI so strict? Sorry I never understood this, but am happy for not having all these problems. Shirley From: Marcia <m_smetanko@ . com> Subject: SSI IPADDUnite@gro ups.com Date: Sunday, December 20, 2009, 10:06 PM  I need advice on how to get the most SSI for my son...my phone interview is in 2 weeks and I need to know the right wordage. Guest guest
For rent, I usually ask the family: - Is this money for housing? housing and food? - Does he/she have his/her own bedroom? own bathroom? SSI has a formula that they use to determine if the rent is sufficient and/or if the applicant is getting " help " . In 2009, I was told by a SSI technical expert that a rent of $250 would be suficient for housing. I would increase this amount every year as SSI also increases their formula yearly. My clients usually do not include food in this amount - this way, the remaining SSI money can be also be used to purchase food. Hope this helps. ________________________________ From: ELLEN BRONFELD <egskb@...> IPADDUnite Sent: Mon, December 21, 2009 8:35:58 PM Subject: Re: SSI  Thanks for the follow up on this Sherri. mentions a rent of $250 as being " safe " . Guest guest
Well, just finished up with my phone interview with Social Security for my 18 year old son and it was not what I expected. Lots of questions....silly ones I think about whether he has worked out of this country and is he getting pensions from any company......No questions about how much rent we were going to ask......or anything else like that....she said it would be sent into Springfield today and we would hear in 3 to 4 months, by mail or phone call, on how much he will be entitled to. Can't wait to hear.
