My doctor recommended Milk Thistle and he is one of the many doctors in "Eastern Carolina Internal Medicine". Go to this web page and it shows how many doctors are a part of this fine office:http://www.ecim.com/about.htmlI will know in April if Milk Thistle has assisted me for I will get lab tests and will see if my reading is steady, higher or what. Also, I'm not sure what kind of education someone working at a health store has,,that is an interesting question..from me anyway. From: Gloria <gadamscan@...> Sent: Tue, January 12, 2010 9:27:27 PMSubject: Re: [ ] Milk Thistle

It's surprising that your doctor would even comment about a supplement!!Also, you could do some research on the computer before you put out good money. Sorry Don, but I don't agree with getting these vitamins just in any food store etc. It's far superior to go to a Health Food Store and get help from the owner. Also, believe it or not, one of the very best companies for vitamins and supplements is through Amway/Quixtar. It was the initial product that started the Amway business. No, I am not involved with them!! However, here is a link to learning about the products.www.nutrilite.comGloria

Hello Don in ks,I take milk thistle 3 times a day. I have attempted the medicine for Hep C twice and my readings went down both times but it is up again since I went off it 2 Septembers ago. Anyone who has taken this medicine knows what it can do to you..if it worked I would be so thankful. I don't want to go through the medicine again unless something new comes out for I felt really miserable..lost a lot of weight (especially the first time)...and it really affected me mentally. We have done a biopsy on my liver and the readings for liver biopsy are 0-4 (4 being cirrosis) and I was between 0-1. I am going to the doctor in April and going to check my readings to see if

maybe the milk thistle has helped. From: Christ <ludichrist2000@...> Sent: Tue, January 12, 2010 9:52:41 PMSubject: Re: [ ] Milk Thistle

Hi Gloria

Sorry, I was a bit rushed, trying to answer Walter, and everybody else too.

I get a lot of emails and posts each day.

I do my best to keep up.

I just ment that there are many sources to look for sups/vitamins in general.

I personally go to the local Health Food store here when I can afford it.

If not, I go to the grocery store, just so that I have 'something'.

I cannot say which brand is best without backup studies like that that was done on Milk Thistle by Consumer Reports.

And that study just tells the quanity of Silymarin in 10 products, not health value.

Sheila does bring up a good point.

How much does a person working in any store really know?

Perhaps a Nutritional Expert would be the one to ask product quality and health value questions of.

A NE would be most informed.

We all know there is a shortage of sup/vitamin clinical studies as to actual proof of health value on most alternatives.

One cannot always believe the company claims, or labeling.

I guess thats why we are the guinea pigs, and have to share our experiances with each other.

I wish there was definate answers, but alas.

I actually believe much more strongly that a person should do there own research on vitamins or supplements. I used to believe that I was being kind to my body by spending a large amount of money on vitamins and supps (in those days I could read my body and it's needs). However, I was still absolutely stunned when I learned that I had Hep C!! Shortly after that I even began a regime of Human Growth Hormones, because I knew a man here that it was definitely helping after a liver transplant.Three months after I started, my primary care Dr. decided it was time that I went to a specialist. Initially, I believed that I was being sent just for the specialist to answer my question - why do my ALT's and AST's bounce up and down. Six months and a liver biopsy later, it

became a moot point. My liver had already slipped to Stage 3, full bridging fibrosis and no one would have had a clue, if it had not been for the biopsy!!So, with that much damage already done, I certainly did not believe that I had the time or the energy to continue the "natural" way. Instead, I went on my first treatment. Now, I've just completed my second round and we are pretty confident that it has worked this time.Gloria

Sheila:That puts a whole different light on the Milk Thistle etc.!!! Having just completed my second round of treatment and it was a clinical trial with the additional Protease Inhibitor, I know pretty much exactly how you feel about doing another treatment. With your liver reading only being 0-1, I would suggest that you leave even the new treatment coming out later this year alone.. I sailed through my first treatment (so blissfully naive back then) and except for a few annoying sides that certainly went away shortly after - it was a shock to the Hep C nurses that helped me through it and to the specialist, that the dragon reared it's ugly head on the 1st PCR after completion. I never even considered anti-depressants back then because I was fine except for the

fatigue of course. I began anti-d's much later and only because there seemed to be so little information for us Non-Responders.However, this last 48 weeks has been thoroughly miserable mentally for me. I've had my anti-d's upped and still had to be prescribed a happy pill last October or put me in the physc ward. I have no idea why this happened this time and do not believe that it had anything to do with the Protease Inhibitor because a person only takes that for 16 weeks. So, I'm sure not prepared to go through the agony of this past year again and so it better have worked. Yet, at the very end, I also learned that the whole thing has destroyed my marriage!! Nope, I do not blame treatment - I blame him entirely, for lacking what it takes to be a real man.Gloria

Hello to you also Gloria,I really was a biatch at home, work, etc and my doctor told me the medicine is very hard on our bodies and minds and to a point,,we should be depressed,,heck,,it sucks I have Hep C! But I do and there is nothing I can do about it except try the medicine and take care of myself the best I can. My first try of the medicine, I lost over 30lbs and was doing shots 3 times a week. Now for my last attempt, I bought the liquid that has a lot of calories and vitamins in it (sorry, can't think of the name of it right now)and only had to do a shot once a week and still lost 15 lbs. I have not lost my husband and I am thankful for that for he did and still does put up with my whining and all. Thanks for your thoughts
