Hi, Pam,

I haven't been all that careful about it. I usually use the Vitamin

World brand. I also bought some powdered whole herb, but haven't

bothered to switch to it yet.

And I raised a bunch this year - pretty plants, pretty flowers. :)

Pam, sorry for my delay in answering. Please, do a search here, you'll

find most of the stuff discussed.

Buhner recommends only standardized milk thistle.

I can't recommend any brand as I buy here in health stores in Germany.

Actually I have researched it. I would never post that kind of info without

doing my research first...and I would never take a supplement or abx without

first researching that either. I generally use Pubmed to start with then I check

other sources as well.

Here are a few links to some clinical research involving milk thistle and renal

activity (the kidney):

Milk thistle is usually associated with liver support. From what I understand,

the primary action of silymarin is to bind toxins into an inert chemical

structure that is easily excreted through the urine. While cornsilk may act as

an excellent diuretic, it's not going to bind to some toxins to help excrete

them like silymarin does. Perhaps the two might work well in conjunction, one to

bind toxins and the other to help wash them out. With a reasonable amount of

water, of course.

Thanks for sharing this.

Would you or someone using milk thistle mind sharing which brand you're using?

I have a bottle that I picked up at the local co op, but the ingredients are

confusing. THe brand is Oregon's Wild Harvest Milk Thistle and the recommended

doseage is 3 caps per day (adults). It contains Milk thistle seed powdered

extract 240 mg and then also Organic Milk Thistle Seed (silybum marianum) 1260

mg. The last ingredient is confusing to me, and the people at the co op

couldn't quite explain it either. Just wondering if I should purchase another

brand.

Thanks,

I use a liquid herbal extract, I really notice that it makes a

difference to my skin health. Does the information on your bottle say

anything about 'equivalent to' ? Usually they make sure there is a

standardised amount of the recognised active ingredient which is called

an 'extract', and they will say it is equivalent to a certain amount of

the dried or fresh herb. Or they will say, for example, 1260mg of dried

herb providing 240mg of the active ingredient. The dosage that they

recommend usually indicates how much of the active ingredient is

available, because the recommended dose will provide the amount that has

been shown to help in trials with the herb.

Just in case you want to be more confused.... " Most herbalists recommend

the equivalent of 3 - 18 grams of dried Milk Thistle Fruit (wrongly

known as Seeds) per day for therapeutic purposes (this equates to 75 mg

- 450 mg of the principal active ingredient, Silymarin). If using Milk

Thistle capsules or tablets that have been standardized to contain 70% -

80% Silymarin, the usual dosage is 200 - 1,050 mg per day (this equates

to 160 - 840 mg of Silymarin per day). "

The G I;s main complain about Milk Thistles and alternative meds as they called them is the untested and unregulated areas. was the unregulated factor. Which is a valid point I deal with a health food store here and its family run and they stay in the loop as far a info.So I felt that the vast amount of knowledge and info on this list would be able to help me select the most reputable makers ok MK. I know some of you have some great experience and and seeking to pick you collective brains. So which firm has the best track record on quallity control?????????Yep Amway has always been a leader in the natural/organic vits and supplements....From our home to your home, we speak a Blessings, and Success 2010.Walter L.
