Abilify works for some of these kids, but it was one of the worst meds that was ever given to Karac. We had to hospitalize him for weeks because it made him so aggressive. Pat K

Hi, my step daughter takes it along with Seroquel at night. It knocks her out!!

(Which after dealing with her ALL day I am greatful!!!) My prob is that she is

allowed to self medicate and when she is not getting her " way " she will and does

take to much, which ends us up in the ER at least 2x a month. But my husband

refuses to let me handle this so I have " washed my hands of her " . I hope this

works our for your son!! I dont know how parents cope with this prob,I am just a

step parent and I am totally done with her and her horrible behavoirs!! So

again,I really and truly wish you the best!!!

Tobie,

Somehow you have to try and understand that your stepdaughter has a disability and that your anger at her is misdirected. I'm sorry if you get upset but please for her sake look at the warning signs and see that she may be 19 years old physically but you have said she is only 9 or so developmentally and not getting the structure or guidance she needs. At her developmental age should she be regulating her own meds? Is she mature and capable enough to make smart, safe choices? If she is over medicating herself she is in danger of harming or even killing herself accidentally and something needs to be done about it. I'm sorry you feel you need to wash your hands of her and cannot do anything to help her. I will pray that she gets the help she needs and deserves so she can become the best she can be. She is a person with a disability who needs help and understanding just like my . He has tantrums, he

hits and he struggles everyday but he loves, smiles, laughs tells jokes and melts my heart every day as well. He needs my love, strength and all the consistency and structure I can provide for him. I don't want to think about how hard it would be for him if he didn't have these things. He has them and he still struggles. Have you read books on autism and do you understand what this disability is? She is a child with a disability and she needs help and structure. I do know it would be harder to come in so late when she is so much older but you signed up for this when you married her father... I am sorry if this upsets you or makes you feel judged. I really wish you the best and I hope you can work this out, Kellie

My cousin has treatment resistant bipolar disease. She has taken lots

of different drugs, but Abilify taken in conjunction with Lithium seems to

be the best for her.

She is also addicted to Ambien, but doctors are already having too much

trouble managing her problems to be willing to try to withdraw her from it.

Her illness has alienated her two sibs and her ex-husband. If she had been

on the correct medications for the last ten years, things would be very

different. I would not be the only family member who will talk with her.

And that is more than anyone wanted to know.

Hope your daughter is showing some improvement.

How long has she been on Depakote. Does it seem like her behaviors were better

or worse on it?

My songoes to the Dr. tomorrow. I may ask him about Abilify. He's having most

problems lately with his obsessive thoughts in songs he wants to listen to & some

aggression; though we don't usually see it here, but have.

Maddie is on Abilify - for almost a year now and I still don't know what I think about it. I know she is more tired. When we had the dose high - she was lethargic, but now that we have lowered her dose her aggression seems quicker to come out - but she's not as tired. Her aggression is always there . . . but I'm not sure if we are treating her right. The doctor first thought she was bipolar, but now he insn't sure. To help with being tired, we give it to her at night with supper. If it is helping with the aggression, maybe try giving it at night.

Do any of you have your children taking Abilify? My son has been on it for one month. Tomorrow is our follow up on the meds. I'd love some feedback if any of you have tried it. feels he is much more tired. Aggression has subsided.. His appetite has decreased. Any info on your experiences would help prior to our appointment at 3pm tomorrow (east coast of USA). He's taking it for his bipolar and mood disorder. I still can't determine what I truly think after only a month. Maybe the teacher would be happy if I duct taped my child's mouth before school. I'm not sure if I told this group or my other one but we live in the same town (for those of you who remember) where the kindergarten class voted out an autistic boy. Me reporting abusive behavior by a teacher toward my son in the

same school district which made national news is not good for them. Believe me, they want him out because they don't know what they're doing and they can't risk the ramifications of another incident which I would gladly take to the papers. Here's my big question, why does my child not qualify for OT anymore since he passed the age of six. No one will take his medicaid and we have been rejected everywhere for treatment. I have begged everyone. What a waste of time where he could have gotten appropriate help.

Thanks Rhonda.  What dose is your daughter on.  Where did she start and what was it reduced to?  When you give it to her at night how much more energy does she have during the day and is it harder for her to fall asleep.  I just don't know.  My son has been on many things and I just am not sure about this drug.  We had our 2nd visit with the new dr. and I don't like him.  You know how you can just tell when something is off.  I had to confirm with a 2nd visit.  Rude, brusk and would not answer my questions.  Not to mention he couldn't get us out of there fast enough for the next patient.  We had a 10 minute appointment!  I think he's running a pill factory for kids.  Seriously.  He does not seem interested in my son at all.  He just gave us more meds.  Time for another doctor.

My son took Abilitiy for some time. He got aggressive with it. Other kids, they do great with it.

I was glad to get rid of it in his case.

Now he takes this wonderful combination of cymbalta, focalin and at night trazadone.

Lois,

Ricky stopped taking Risperdal in July 2009 and started on Abilify. The month

of July was good for him, but it has gone down hill since. He recently had

started doing better, and we reduced the Abilify from 10mg at night to 5mg at

night(still taking 5mg in the morning). He was very tired, reduced

appetite(which is ok for now). Since he has been on 5mg at night, his

aggression has come back something awful. He is in the hospital right now cause

he wanted to kill me again.

We are also starting the GFCF diet this month and some withdrawl symptoms are

normal, just not the wanting to kill part.

I am not sure what to think about Abilify. But, we will continue with it for

now. The pharmacy that supplies his biomedical meds will compound the abilify

to take out the artificial color (blue) and make it into a liquid. That's the

only way I want him to take it, if he has to be on it.

We went to one doctor about a year ago. He started right away she was bipolar and put her on Abilify 10 mg. But then he just kept raising the dose every 3 - 4 days and she went up to 50 mg. By then all she did was sleep and we still had the aggression - really bad- she puts holes in the walls, throws herself down steps, beats me up and threatens to kill me. He just kept wanting to raise the dose higher and higher. I kept saying I think there is more to it - she doesn't want to leave the house and she quit her dance class - she used to LOVE dance. She wont even go to do fun things that she enjoyed in the past. That doctor kept saying she was so much fun and would't listen to me. She will also carry conversations as 2 people and then gets into a fight with herself and start another rage attack. She will also

talk in a different voice and there have been times when she will say Madison is not here and she responds to another name - Abby. Also, when she uses that voice, her speech is very clear and correct. Normally it is broken and only 3 word senences. We kept asking if there was something else there and he kept saying no - typical bipolar. We would like her to be placed in a facility where they can watch her 24/7, but he wouldn't do that until she attacked him. Unfortunately, he placed her at the hospital he was at and it is for adults. They treated her like a princess and she got to do whatever she wanted -she sat in her room all day and rocked. After being in there 5 days the doctor asked me if I realized she talked in the 3rd person - I said yes. She goes I just realized that! I guess she didn't spend much time with Maddie - sigh:( When we got her out we went to another doctor.

He won't put her in a facility either - he says all this is just plain autism and anxiety. He has her on 100 mg.Zoloft and 15 Abilify and 1 mg Tenex in AM and 1 mg PM. She is better as far as being tired but she still talks to herself and puts herself into rages. We also noticed she will be sittig there and start to scream let me in, let me in or no don't hit me, get off me, etc. We have no idea if she is hallucinating or what. He won't answer when I ask about that - just says it's anxiety??? Well, she had surgery 2 weeks ago and we don't take her out of the house because she can't put weight on her leg so I know there is no anxiety. She will sit and all of a sudden say she wants something to eat - I'll ask what and then say no hungry get away from me stupid head and off we go. We've started the process to put her in a group home but they said it could take years for funding - sigh. My only

aggrevation is it will make it easier for me, but it's not helping her. But we have 3 other kids and our home life is terrible right now with her rages and it's not safe for them or any of us:( And I still think there is something else with her. Oh, his one suggestion was to place her in theraputic foster care. I asked what would that do and he said it would teach her to live as a family and they could teach me how to handle her. The ironic thing is WE are foster parents and never had problem handling her until a year ago when she got her first period. I've done a lot wth her and I've had all the professionals tell me how great we are with her - we use gluten-free diet, sensory, icons/transitoning stories and timers to prepare her, etc. Don't know what another foster family would do for her that I'm not.

I'm sorry - off topic and ranting. The abilify at night did help somewith her being tired, but we had to go to a lower dose to see the most results - she was way too medicated:( But then we have never had a problem with Maddie going to sleep - 7:30 p.m. every night whether we wanted her to or not! haha:)

I hope this gives you some relief - I just don't see where any of the meds are working for Maddie:(

This is all so interesting to me.  My son has only been on abilify for 5 weeks.  The doctor started him at 2 mgs./day.  His aggression is under control.  I think he's lethargic and his appetite is down which is not good in his case.  Very underweight.

Lois, I can so relate to what you said.  When we first started with bi-polar meds over 3 years ago my son tried to kill me several times.  His aggression was way out of control.  He was in and out of the psych unit until the cops finally arrested him and mde him spend a night in jail.  I was livid.  He was 10 years old.  He was handcuffed and shackled and in with teenagers.  I've heard him talk about killing me many times.  I haven't heard it in a while.  It's been 1.5 years since the aggression has come out with me.  I've told many people that once you feel like you need to hide your knives, it's time to get your child out of your house.  Hard lesson for me.  I hope you can get him stabilized soon.  I've been in your shoes.  Feel free to vent any time.  Only moms who have children who have been aggressive towards them, threatened or tried to kill them really gets what that feels like.  My son held a knife to my throat.  I knew the hormones pumping into his body were not helping.  How old is your child?  Let me know if I can help at all.

Hang in there.  Don't bring him home too soon.  You need to unwind as well.  Sometimes it's a relief when they are on the unit.  I have no problem admiting that anymore.  I have no time for guilt.  It's the truth.  These are tough kids to raise but we don't want to raise a Virginia Tech type killer so we need to stay on top of it.  We're not stupid.  I'd rather put my child on a psych unit rather than let him go to school when he's really off so he doesn't seriously injure someone.  He stabbed someone in the heart once in school with a pencil.  Just so happens he wasn't strong enough to puncture through the clothes.  I can't take the risk when I'm seeing aggression.  I have to protect him prior to something horrific happening and protect the people around him.

All my best,'Judie

Lois,

Ricky stopped taking Risperdal in July 2009 and started on Abilify. The month of July was good for him, but it has gone down hill since. He recently had started doing better, and we reduced the Abilify from 10mg at night to 5mg at night(still taking 5mg in the morning). He was very tired, reduced appetite(which is ok for now). Since he has been on 5mg at night, his aggression has come back something awful. He is in the hospital right now cause he wanted to kill me again.

We are also starting the GFCF diet this month and some withdrawl symptoms are normal, just not the wanting to kill part.

I am not sure what to think about Abilify. But, we will continue with it for now. The pharmacy that supplies his biomedical meds will compound the abilify to take out the artificial color (blue) and make it into a liquid. That's the only way I want him to take it, if he has to be on it.

Abilify made Karac so aggressive that he had to be hospitalized. It works for some of the kids, but it was terrible for Karac. Pat K

Do any of you have your children taking Abilify? My son has been on it for one month.. Me reporting abusive behavior by a teacher toward my son in the same school district which made national news is not good for them.

My son Elijah is currently on Abilify. For him it works very well... much

better than Risperdal ever did. It helps calm his aggressions, eliminated rages

and night terrors too.

Over the last week and a half I have decreased my son's dosage of Risperdal from 9mg to 7 1/2 mg per day and he has tolerated well. Yesterday doctor added 5mg Abilify to see how he does and hopefully reduce Risperdal and then Abilify all together, but after I gave him the Abilify last night almost right away I noticed an aggressive mood change and today bus driver said he did alot of head banging and disruption. Can the Abilify give him that much of a negative reaction that quickly? Or just coincidence and it is something else?

Any ideas?

My son who is 9 y/o was on Abilify and he had so much agression from that medicine. His behavior had gotten worse from the medicine and i finally brought it up to the Dr. and she said that Abilify helps some kids with behavior/aggression and some kids it makes it worse. He see's a phycologist at Children's Hospital in Ohio, our appointment's with her is an 1 1/2 long bec. we go over alott, like each day occurences, any changes, and she care's about his well being. He is taking Vyvanse and his aggression/behavior problems have gone away, he is doing great. The other med's he takes is Serequel in the afternoon and at bedtime and Clonodine at bedtime. The sereqel and clonodine helps him go to sleep at night, with out it he is up for days with no sleeping. Hope this helps, and wish you luck, and everyone on here i pray for.
