Hey ,

I think we both have the same problem. I too suffer from allergic reactions, and I am short of breath. I never had this before...and the doctors don't find the reason.

The difference between you and me is that these reactions started a few months ago as I wasn't yet in treatment...

I went to see a specialist today, he dosn't think there is a link to my hep C.

Hey , welcome. Yes, I have the cough that

doesn't exist. I've been on treatment for almost 7

months. Been coughing the whole time. I've gotten used

to it actually. It's the headaches I don't care for.

Anyway, the doctors will tell you many things but we

know what's happening to us. I truly believe the cough

is relatde to the drugs. I have a wonderful nurse and

doctor, but their answer is drink more water. At the

moment I'm drinking 1 oz per lb of body weight of

clear liquids every day. I still get headaches after

the shot and I still cough. Some sides come and go so

be prepared. Again, welcome to the group and ask

whatever you want or just vent or tell us about

yourself.

Hi, Sharon,

Thanks for the good advice. I hadn't heard that formula: 1oz of water per

lb of body weight. I have been drinking water but probably not enough.

I'll give it a try.

Kind regards,

Hi

One of the side effects of Ribavirin is coughing. I had a cough while on treatment. The fatigue is also part of the treatment. I was able to tolerate it pretty good. After a while your side effects should be a little better. You'll probably feel tired all of the time.

[ ] Introducing Myself

Hello, everyone:

I'm a newcomer here: 57-yr old male living in VT. Had my 3rd injection last night; on the Peg-Intron combination protocol (Interferon + Riibavirin). I got Hep C from heavy IV drug use back in the late 'sixties; apparently the chickens are coming home to roost now.

My worst problem--and I don't know if it's even hep C-related-- is a dry, hacking non-productive cough that is with me constantly. I don't have any other respiratory or allergy symptoms and have never had an allergy problem before.

My GP is not sure. She said, this is the worst season EVER here for pollen; it doesn't get any worse than this. Yet the onset of this cough concides with starting my hep C treatment, so who knows? Not even codeine cough syrup gives me much relief and I'm feeling pretty miserable.

I called my nurse from the Be-In-Charge program, and she didn't think this coughing was a usual treatment symptom. However, it IS listed as such in the PDR.

Has anyone had anything like this? I'm hoping it's pollen-related because then it might be treatable. If not, I'm not sure I can live with this for 48 more weeks. Also have some general malaise and fatigue. It doesn't paralyze me but it seems to make little things like household chores a major effort.

I am lucky to be blessed with a caring spouse and helpmate in all this. She was once a nursing assistant and does a better job than I could of mixing and giving my the injection (you'd think, after mainlining heroin and speed years ago, I wouldn't be squeamish about needles, but I am).

Apologies for going on for so long. Reaching out for advice here, and maybe I'll have something to add that can be of help to someone else.

God bless all of you,

Hi, ,

Thanks for your response. Yeah, I'm finding out about fatigue. I had this idea I was going to keep going to the gym and working out (a great antidote to depression), but so far I just don't have the energy for it. Also, having trouble with the usual Saturday chores today: laundry, cleaning, grocery shopping. I can do those things, but now it just seems to take a monumental effort.

Kind regards,

I know a guy who still works out, a lot, on the

treatment. He's incredible though. Most of us have to

slw down. I stay fairly active but a flight of stairs

does me in. I'm a REAL active person and one of the

most frustrating things about treatment is I'm having

to learn to stop. I do my shot Thursday night. As the

week goes on I get better but with every week that

goes by I seem to get further away from reaching 100%

power by Thursday. I just keep telling myself " this

too shall pass " . You will get sick of it at times but

keep pushing forward. You Can do it.

Thanks for the encouragement, Sharon,

I take my shot on Thursday night, too (my work week is Sunday through

Thursday). For exercise, a couple of days ago I took a long, brisk walk

with my dog and stayed in my aerobic zone. It took more effort than it used

to, but it didn't seem to get me coughing any more than usual.

Yes, " this, too, shall pass. "

You should be able to do some of those things with time. I was able to work 10 hours a day at a very strenuous job while on the treatment. I was usually in bed not long after I got home, but was able to tolerate the fatigue. On my days off I didn't want to do any thing but sit around and do nothing.

Hi, , Thanks

for your response. Yeah, I'm finding out about fatigue. I had

this idea I was going to keep going to the gym and working out (a great

antidote to depression), but so far I just don't have the energy for it.

Also, having trouble with the usual Saturday chores today: laundry,

cleaning, grocery shopping. I can do those things, but now it just

seems to take a monumental effort. Kind

[ ] Introducing

Myself

Hello, everyone: I'm

a newcomer here: 57-yr old male living in VT. Had my 3rd injection

last night; on the Peg-Intron combination protocol (Interferon + Riibavirin).

I got Hep C from heavy IV drug use back in the late 'sixties; apparently

the chickens are coming home to roost now. My

worst problem--and I don't know if it's even hep C-related-- is a dry,

hacking non-productive cough that is with me constantly. I

don't have any other respiratory or allergy symptoms and have never had

an allergy problem before. My

GP is not sure. She said, this is the worst season EVER here for

pollen; it doesn't get any worse than this. Yet the onset of this

cough concides with starting my hep C treatment, so who knows? Not

even codeine cough syrup gives me much relief and I'm feeling pretty miserable. I

called my nurse from the Be-In-Charge program, and she didn't think this

coughing was a usual treatment symptom. However, it IS listed as

such in the PDR. Has anyone had

anything like this? I'm hoping it's pollen-related because then it

might be treatable. If not, I'm not sure I can live with this for

48 more weeks. Also have some general malaise and fatigue.

It doesn't paralyze me but it seems to make little things like household

chores a major effort. I am lucky

to be blessed with a caring spouse and helpmate in all this.

She was once a nursing assistant and does a better job than I could of

mixing and giving my the injection (you'd think, after mainlining

heroin and speed years ago, I wouldn't be squeamish about needles, but

I am). Apologies for going on

for so long. Reaching out for advice here, and maybe I'll have something

to add that can be of help to someone else. God

bless all of you,

some people who are misinformed about Hep C do look and treat you different..I have gone through that even with my own family..As far as you losing your hair some only get thinned..I haven't heard of anyone in here going completely bald due to TX..I dont know what to tell you to tell them..I feel like you that they don't need to know..Just be careful in what you say if and when that time comes. As far as your past it is just that..We all have skeletons in our closets!! I'm sure if they were honest they would see and aadmit that they (some co-workers) have had a torrid past too..No one is perfect..We start out that way in life but we seem to all make a few turns at times wether it be drugs..alcohol..adultry..or orther things..Don't worry about saying what is bothering you in here that's what we are here for..

Thanks for the welcome, Jan.

You said you WERE on TX, so does that mean you've completed it?

Thanks, Arlene,

If I might be allowed to vent another concern I have: I work in VT civil service as a civilian employee for the State Police. Many of the practicing drug users that get busted have hep C, and the cops, who all have to get shots for Hep B, have some misconceptions about hep C -- namely that's it's spread like the flu and NOT, as it really is, by blood exchanges.

When I applied to work with the state, I didn't tell anyone about my drug busts in the 'sixties. Hey, it was a LONG time ago, and why does anyone need to know? They did a record check on me -- but FBI and police records have only been computerized for about 25 years. To get earlier records, you have to send fingerprints in to the FBI and they'll do a manual search. For all practical purposes, this is never done unless you're a lifelong felon, or something like that.

So, this is all making me paranoid. No one at the Barracks knows I have Hep C, and, knock on wood, they never will, unless I have to go on disability. I'm sure this is not the only job where one has to be careful about what you say. I get along well, and I don't think any of the cops would hold my long ago behavior against me. However, this is a state bureaucracy, bound by 'rules and regs,' by the books, the Chief was supposed to take prints and send them in to the FBI when he hired me.

Another fear I have is that everyone would start avoiding me, not eating with me in the lunch room, etc. How will I explain it if I start losing my hair from the Interferon? And if I just say I have a serious illness and leave it at that, won't THAT make them suspicious? I mean, these are cops, after all, and some of them detectives, and they can easily put two and two together.

I'm just venting my fears and paranoia here, and maybe I've gone too far: hope none of you live in my state (LOL)! Sorry to go on again, but this has been weighing me down, and I needed to express it.

Many thanks,
