What is lactulose? I have heard of lactose and galactose, but not

lactulose. I am lactose intolerant and need to take lactase.

, lactulose is a syrupy prescription that they give to liver disease

patients. It is someone like Karo syrup, but not quite as thick. My

hepatologist told me that this binds with the ammonia and the toxins in your

system to help with the encephalopathy.

I didn't know that Lactulose is for memory loss and other effects of AIH

until I read it here. My GI doctor who was treating me before I started

seeing Hepatologists prescribed it but I thought it was for constipation so

I didn't take it. I still have a huge bottle of the stuff but it probably

isn't any good anymore since it's dated November, 1997. Does anyone know

how long the stuff stays stable?

Debbie,

Your doctor sounds caring and concerned in a very positive way. I wouldn't

worry about being re-listed. It's kind of like a security blanket. He's

protecting you in case something starts to go seriously wrong. Hope you're

feeling okay except for the memory loss.

Take care,

Geri

Hi Lori -

Have you ever had to take lactulose? My GI prescribed it for me yesterday.

So far it's not agreeing with me too well .. but I will stick with it.

Could you tell me if you had any side effects from taking it .. if in fact

you had to take it? And if you did take it, for how long did you?

Thanks for any input.

Hi Debbie, I took lactulose for 4 months, I really did not have any side

effects that I can remember, if anything maybe a little upset stomach, but

it helped if I took it right after a meal.Actually It does help quite a bit.

Good luck!!!! Lori C. AIH Liver transplant

Sheila,

Lactulose is used to keep the ammonia levels in your brain down. I found out

that this stuff causes diaherea because toxins only way to leave the body is

through the sewer department.

Sheila.... I`m not sure either .... my expeience was as treatment for

portal systemic hepatic encephalopathy... I took it 2-3 times a day for

the better part of a year... it set up a chemistry in my intestines

whereby ammonia was retained in my bowels and even leached from my blood

and eliminated helped by the laxitive action of the lactulose.. actually

I believe I was off and on it as it is a very powerful laxitive....it`s

been over 5yrs. years and my memory is fuzzy.... I do remember having to

use baby wipes as my tush was sore from going so often.. It was not one

of my favorite rememberances

jerry

Anyone have experience with using lactulose when you are

1) not confused

2) not constipated

My doc just prescribed and I'm not sure why.

Thanks,

Sheila

Jerry,

I agree with you. I am on Lactulose and it causes horrible stomach pain and

diarrhea. I took it an hour ago and have already been in the bathroom twice.

My dr. has also put me on Neomycin (which I believe works hand in hand with

the Lactulose). My stomach has been a mess! I have lost three pounds in the

last week. Now if I could only lose the pregnant look, I would be happy!

Joanne.... are you sure you are talking about lactulose?

I took lactulose 2-3 times a day for a year as treatment for hepatic

encephalopathy which I developed in end stage cirrhosis.

Lactulosis a powerful laxitive which should be taken only under a

doctors care and it is a prescribed medication. It is a sugar based

solution that is contraindicated for diabetics. It works by drawing

water into the digestive system , mainly the colon, the water leaches

ammonia out of your bloodstream before it can reach your brain. Ammonia

toxicity causes severe confusion, motor skill debilitation. slurred

speech and eventually coma and death as your brain is oxygen deprived.

I`ve had encephalopathy and it is a lot different than the brain fog

that most of us are complaining about. Lactulose begins it`s work in

less than 24 hours..believe me. When on lactulose one spends a GREAT

deal of time on the toilet

and diarrhea is normal. My tush was very tender and i used baby wipes

to clean my self. It is a nasty drug. I never heard of it being a sleep

aid. Actually when one has severe liver damage (end stage cirrhosis or

close,) one tends to sleep quite a lot and if anything suffers from

sleep reversal. I may be wrong but I don`t think a doctor would

prescribe it for the type of brain fog we suffer which I think is

related to the prednisone. There are tests that can be given to assess

the severity of ones hepatic encephalopathy and this condition usually

shows up in severely cirrhosed livers when the liver is no longer able

to metabolize protiens and eliminate the resulting toxins (i.e. ammonia)

By this time one usually shows other complications such as

ascites, variceal bleeding, edema, intestinal infection and so on. It is

a precursor to transplant. Even with the lactulose there is still a fair

amount of confusion and clumbsiness.I would suggest from experience that

one wouldn`t want to take lactulose if he/she didn`t absolutely need it.

Long term use can lead to digestive tract problems along with chronic

diarrhea. It is used as a life saving measure.(at least in my case)

In all humbleness

love and serenity

Jerry

Not only does the lactulose help reduce brain fog (by cleaning out the

toxins to some degree) but it will also make it easier to sleep and stay

alseep.it relieves the restlessness you can have at night. It should kick in

within two (2) weeks. Call you doc. For myself, I take my anti-itch med

Atarax at bed time.and it not only stops my itching but helps me

sleep.without it I toss and turn. Joanne

Marty, Ah Lactulose, Jerry & I can speak volumes on this. First Marty, when you see the Dr. next week have him change you from Lactulose to Kristalose. It will be like moving from cherry cough syrup to a fine blush chablis. You will actually look forward to taking it. Kristalose comes in a power, I empty the pouch into a glass, pour in I/2 cranberry juice, mix well then add water. delicious!

The color you won't have much control over, if you have to take lactulose, they are probably light. What you do want is big, fat, semi-firm and fluffy. My dose is twice yours, 30 cc's 4 times a day. Over a week should be long enough, maybe you need a bit longer, sorry, I don't know if you are taking too much or too little.

I hope there are answers from somewhere else. I urge you to have him change your prescription! Kristalose is new & improved!

O.K. Now, I have been on Lactulose for over a week. All it has done is make me extremely gassy, crampy, and decreased my appetite. My GI said the goal was two bowel movements per day, but all I am getting is a little bit here and there. No major stools that I can remember. Also the stools are thin, light tan to yellow. I am taking 30 cc twice daily. Does this mean it isn't working, should I increase the dose or what? Of course I will ask the doctor next week, but I wondered what others have experienced?

Hi Marty.....Lactulose didnt work for me because after a week or so it was clear I was blocked somewhere. Youve got my sympathy. Because of my experience I would advise you to seek your doctor's opinion especially if you suffer bad crampy pain or more severe 'pain'. Sorry I cant be of more help. Others may have a solution.

Jan: I think enough is coming through that I am not completely blocked somewhere, but I know there is a lot more being held back. I will call the doc tomorrow.

Patty: Thanks for the advice re: the Kristalose. I will ask about that as well. The Lactulose really gags me. I hate sweet beverages, especially sweet and syrupy! I have been diluting it with water and slugging it down.....

Patty,

I'm worried about you. You must be feeling poorly if you think the switch is like having a fine Chablis. (Ha Ha) I can talk to you about the Lactulose but if the new stuff is like a Chablis I'm sure I'll switch. You really have me sold. Hang in there Marty, when it starts working you will definitely not have to ask.

I think it's pitiful that one of my big concerns is the color, size and consistency of my stools. Who would have thought??? Until you have been constipated, though, how would you know? I am not jaundiced, but my stools have been this light color for some time. I am still awaiting results of the liver biopsy I had one week ago today. I called Friday and the results were not available yet so I am still waiting.

In the meantime, it is a beautiful sunny and cool day here in Northern Michigan and I am going to muster the energy to take my two Airedales for a walk.

Thanks for your input.

Now , Are you suggesting the use of 'fine and Chablis together is an oxymoron... like jumbo shrimp or fiery ice? I used to think of Chablis as the stuff that came in a California jug however I found I was very wrong during a wine tour of France (too many years ago when I could enjoy wine tastings without volunteering to be the designated driver). There are some really good Chablis wines, what I didn't know until later is that it is a single vineyard young chardonnay... If I misunderstood your comment sorry... Kristalose really is better.
